Two astronauts went on the mission s third spacewalk on Saturday to replace faulty computer circuit boards in the Hubble s Advanced Camera for Surveys. The camera had been impaired since 2007, when its electronics shorted out . The spacewalkers carefully opened 36 tiny screws on the camera, and took out the circuit boards. Special tools had to be developed for the repair work, as the advanced camera was never meant to be repaired in space. One will be for the study of health sciences such as physical therapy, and the other will be in industrial technologies such as mechanical or electronic engineering. A large crane was used to move three containers carrying the fuel from the ship to trailers. The fuel will be transported to Chubu Electric s Hamaoka nuclear power plant. Japan had planned to begin using a mixture of uranium and plutonium extracted from spent nuclear fuel at its nuclear power plants in 1999. But it shelved the plan after revelations that data on the fuel had been falsified. The latest photograph shows the satellite and the blue-colored earth in the background. The image was received from the satellite on May 12th. Logos of the companies and universities that developed the satellite are also visible. Maido Number 1 was launched in January and has been orbiting about 660 kilometers above the earth s surface. It has been observing lightning and testing a sensor to determine the position of the sun. A senior official of the development group says the satellite has completed all of its planned experiments, including the photography.
