I am very/really good. などのように"very"といった強弱を表すものを前に持ってくることができる。いっぽう、"fine"などはその単語自身が特定の強さ (今の場合だったら、「けっこう元気」みたいな感じ) をもっており、ungradableである。なので、 I am very fine. Is it nice? Is it good? How is it? ぐらいで聞くとよいかもしれない。 ふだんから使う形容詞がungradable/gradableなのかを意識しておくと、こういう"very fine"などの少し違和感のある表現を減らすことができる。 "How do you think?"と"What do you think?" アメリカに数ヶ月滞在していたときに、むこうにいた英語・日本語bilingualの日本人に、「"How do you think?"は日本語の直訳で、より自然な表現はたいてい"What do you think?"だよ。」と言われた。"how"はあくまで手段や方法に関して使うので、日本語の「(〜の件について)どう思う?」と聞きたいときはたいてい"What do you think ~?"となるそうな。 topとbest 日本で良く使われる"Best 20"とか"Best 10"とかそういうのは、本来の意味とは意味がかけ離れている。日本で使われる「ベストn(nは数字)」というのは、「上位n位」みたいな意味で使われていることが多いが、それは本来は"Top n(nは数字)"と言うほうがベター。たとえば Top 100 universities in the world などといった感じ。"best 10"などと英語の文章で使われなくはないとは思うが、その場合は、それら10個のものはすべて横並びの、だいたい同程度のランクや順位におかれているのであって、順位が付けられているわけではない、という印象がある。 Phrasal verbs verbs+particle (up, downなど) で構成される動詞を"phrasal verb"という。日常会話でよく出会うわりに、授業ではあんまり取り上げられない傾向にある気がする。 come come+~という表現で出会ったものをまとめる。 come+~ meaning example come along arrive at a place We were chattering in the room when he came along with his girlfriend. come apart separate into pieces The cover of my book is coming apart. So let me use your glue. come around get conscious again When I came around after the operation, my girlfriend was standing by my bed. come down to highly depend on I guess final decision on this topic will come down to my supervisor s recommendation. come out disappear or become weak (of the dirt or color of clothing) Do you think it will come out if I put it in washer? assume 論文でよく見る"assume"だが、 Assuming- という使い方をしているとき, たとえば、 Assuming the jet angle to the line of sight of 90 degrees, the kinematic age of the jets is estimated to be 10^6 years. と書くのはあまりよくない。なぜなら"Assuming"しているのは"I" or "we"なのであって、主語の"the kinematic age"ではない。主語をそのままにする場合は、"Assuming"を"By assuming"とする。 たとえば、 "By" assuming the jet angle to the line of sight of 90 degrees, the kinematic age of the jets is estimated to be 10^6 years. みたいに。あるいは、主語をきちんとそろえる。 Assuming the jet angle to the line of sight of 90 degrees, we estimate the kinematic age of the jets to be 10^6 years. など。 細かい言い回し集 ~で使われている情報を元に "information based on XX et al." = "information as presented in XX et al." 波長をmentionするとき detected "in" 3.4 micron band, but not detected "at" 3.4 micron. yetの場所 "This sample is not complete yet." = "This sample is not yet complete."
