In combination, these two systems mean it is a jet craft that doesn t rely on aerodynamic lift. It uses minimal flight planes (principally for maneuvers), and can generate considerable speed for its size. It s essentially a heavy gunship (Fow calls it a dreadnought ), but it s a fast attack heavy gunship capable of such tight maneuvers and at such speeds as to potentially tear itself to pieces and/or kill its crew if the captain isn t careful. These “light” cruisers bore enough firepower to have been light dreadnoughts in early years, but times had changed, and rather incredible firepower and defensive capability was now in his command. Unfortunately, despite the two new-model heavies floating about the battlefield for the enemy, Yeago had to hang back because the Gariagull didn t have the ability to thwart fighter assaults. She instead remained behind air cover and ground-based protection. The general commander, Felind Murmura, felt confident of victory. Yeago did not. He didn t have as much experience in battle, but he knew how to count flies as they perished in the smoke, and more of their flies were dying than the enemy s. It was clear to him that, despite the Krushaltsha keeping the enemy warships at bay, the enemy was obtaining air superiority. Fortunately, his orders gave him some discretion. “Kredlin, approach seventy to coordinate G-19. Burcante, prepare gun assault on ground forces for when we arrive.” He d keep out of the gunsights of anti-aircraft while clearing them out, thus freeing the air fleet to focus on the air. It s what they had been doing. It was boring work that didn t earn much in the way of glory, but it was useful work that won battles. Plus, the ground forces were terrified of it, so at least he got respect from somewhere. Somewhere in the Beauty of a Bullet, something ruptured. A shudder went through her hull as a critical system decided it wasn t going to work half as hard as it used to, and it was taking as much of the rest of the craft along with it as it could. Captain Nara spun to face her deck officer. “Priscean, tell me what that was.” Dini Priscean, who had hoped to live long enough to see his own command one day, listened to the comm. “Engineering reports a reserve aeronautic fuel tank burst and ignited. Damage control underway.” Nara turned towards communications. “Denken, where s the commander?” Denken finally chimed in. “Commander instructs that you may pull back minimal distance to ensure survival, but insists we keep this position clear of enemy forces.” Nara could have choked somebody. “It s already swarming with enemy forces, how the hell are we supposed to stop them? Tell her to get ground forces over here. We re leaving.” Just as she started to issue repositioning instructions, her telemetry officer called out. “Captain, Crundalt cruiser has adjusted course and is now en route, bearing us.” Nara stopped for a moment and, while calling out instructions to her helmsman, moved to the side view. There was the cruiser, coming down in their direction. In between them… no friendly anti-aircraft, and a gap in the air cover. Somehow, the Red Sea had parted, and now Moses was coming down to beat her with his stick. “Crundalt support cruiser mobile, bearing towards coordinate 128-92.” Captain Burak stopped as she heard Stales announce this. She looked at the map and realized that it was a course direct to the Beauty of a Bullet. She said to nobody in particular, “It s bearing down on Sistra.” The aircraft coming in on them had lightened a bit, and she looked out. For all the air war going on, it was suddenly quite peaceful. That was when it dawned on her. “Visturen, set course heading thirty right, four-fifths burn. Prepare to turn ninety left at full burn on my mark.” The initial course would set them into the area just clearing of the cruiser s control, but the second course would tend to put the Kiss for Yntil directly in its area of control. Deck officer Radley was a bit concerned. “Captain, request plan update.” When Captain Burak smiled in peacetime, it was a pleasant smile usually at someone s expense. When she smiled in wartime, it was an unpleasant smile of a wolf looking at a pig with a lacerated belly. Burak smiled. “So do I, Radley. So do I.” Captain Yeago turned to look at his telemetry officer. “Repeat that, Moran.” Telemetry officer Lojodien Moran repeated himself. “Attack ship two has set course just outward of our original position.” Yeago paused, and thought it through. “So, it s going to break up some of the support we gathered as we break up its sister. Very well.” Yeago had reason for confidence – the first craft… would it be a heavy destroyer? A light battleship? Whatever it was, it was already in danger, and the main guns on the Krushaltsha should disable or kill her rapidly. Then it would be a quick about-face to confront the other interloper. Moran called in, “Attack ship one coming into range.” The moment was coming. Moran then called in again. “Attack ship two has come about, heading in our direction at… very rapid speeds.” Yeago spun to face him. It didn t make sense the attack craft coming after a ship-killer… except he realized he was facing his fanny towards it. His eyes narrowed. Attack ship one would come into optimum range just about the time attack ship two would bear him down. “Moran, identify precisely the approach vector of attack ship two.” “Attack ship two coming in one point five off left, speed one seventy and rising.” He leaned back in his chair. “Tzerin snare. Kredlin, on my mark cut thrust and come about one-seventy right. Burcante, prepare forward guns to rapidly adjust and fire. The bunny s going to hop over us and into our mouth.” Jagor Yeland, telemetry officer on the Beauty of a Bullet, called in, “Kiss of Yntil is now bearing one point four off of Crundalt cruiser at full burn.” Captain Nara turned to her telemetry officer. “What the fucking Hell does that stupid bitch think she s gonna pull?” The answer seemed obvious. A Tzerin snare was a Fow maneuver first employed in the Third Battle on Tzerin Valley, when a Vizelve came up behind a battleship at high speed, pounding it in the ass, then shifted to a collision course. The other craft attempted an evasion, but the Vizelve just nosed-up and went high, then cut thrust and pulled the rudder hard. The Vizelve pitched around, its body acting as a wind-sail to cut velocity. The fall of the Vizelve hit the rudder, causing the craft to pirouette, and the thrust turned it into the motion of the enemy craft, giving it a second look at its ass. The problem is, everybody knew this maneuver. Nara made a quick decision. “Come about. We re going to support Ilin. She s going to owe me a fleet of hookers and more booze than I can drink.” The forward guns of the Dzazd weren t guns at all. They were rocket launches. Their range wasn t incredible – they were more devoted to deploying a large amount of explosive with enough penetrating force to get it on the other side of armor before it blew. The first launch from a Kiss for Yntil s two heavy tubes went out as she approached. The cruiser shifted to one side, and one rocket missed. The other glanced target, detonating outside of the craft, doing moderate damage. The forward 88mm guns started pounding on it, causing some more damage. The rear of the craft wasn t heavily defended, but the cruiser s rear guns made the chassis of a Kiss for Yntil s shake hard. “Visturen, on my mark set forward jets back, set mid jets front, set rear jets back. Fire one will be front left rear right. Fire two will be front right rear left. Fire three will be both mid. Confirm.” Visturen, who was ever curious as to what the captain was going to do to kill him before the enemy got the opportunity, prepared the facing commands. “Forward to back, mid to front, rear to back. One is front left rear right, two is front right rear left, three is mid.” Burak nodded and leaned back. She took the comm from Radley, an act that for any deck officer was rather like pulling down his pants. “All hands, violent maneuvers ahead. Prepare for sudden G-force without warning.” Radley then hit the button for shipwide comm. “You may want to repeat that, ma am.” Burak looked at him like he d rather she had taken his pants from him, then repeated the instruction. Moran called in, “Sir, attack ship two s vector is too narrow for a Tzerin snare.” Captain Yeago turned to look at him. “What s the vector?” Moran looked up at him. “It s going to approach to within 150 meters of us broadside.” Yeago was baffled. “On what planet does it think it s going to broadside us? No… it s doing a Tzerin snare. These new airships aren t using aerodynamic lift. This captain s too certain of her craft s maneuverability. He forgets that he still needs room to make the turn.” He turned to the flight officer. “Visturen, adjust trajectory for where she would be if we were… one hundred thirty meters to our right. That should be correct. We may need to make a sharp banking turn.” The rear observation deck of the Krushaltsha had several persons looking in horror as the face of the attack ship got closer and closer, veering ever so gently to their right. The gunners opened fire as much as they could, but the Krushaltsha didn t have a great many guns to her rear. They did have a great many guns on their flank, so it was only a matter of time. The Tzerin snare would be filled with failure. The Krushaltsha s drive system shifted, propelling forward and to the right in a short horizontal adjustment and a moderate-speed pirouette. The rear deck observers felt their bellies lariated by their belaying straps. But they didn t watch a Tzerin snare. “What… the… fuck…?” After the fact, nobody on the command deck of the Beauty of a Bullet would be certain who had said it, not even the person who said it. As they came about, they watched as a Kiss for Yntil didn t adjust direction. Instead, its jets burned it into a spin, retaining its forward velocity while doing a midair twirl. The main guns launched another pair of heavy rockets that took gouges out of the sides of the Crundalt cruiser before exploding, shrapnel going so far as to scar the face of a Kiss for Yntil. Her forward 88s fired over and over again at absurdly close range, close enough that the burst blew back onto the firing craft. As the cruiser came about to face where it thought its enemy was going, a Kiss for Yntil did a full forward velocity 180º vertical axis spin, a maneuver for which there hadn t yet even been a term. In layman s terms, it kept going forward at full speed while spinning around to face backwards, all the while the butt of the Crundalt attack ship in its face getting pounded by her guns. It would ve been beautiful if Captain Nara didn t know what must ve been happening to the interior of a Kiss for Yntil. Captain Burak tried to give a coherent order, but the safety straps on her chair were clenched so tight against her chest that she couldn t take a breath. She was jammed against one side of her chair, her back threatening to crack for being bent over the armrest. Her command crew continued their duties, half of them shoved up against their control consoles and half of them clutching those consoles in hopes of keeping the controls in reach. One deck officer lost grip on a railing and flew to the other side, striking his head on a bulkhead. A large amount of blood remained where he hit. Visturen shouted, “Firing two!” The vessel s spin suddenly stopped as the jets fired to halt its rotation. Burak clutched her head for the headache she was under, and looked around. The whole crew looked punch drunk. Then again, the deck itself looked punch drunk. It occurred to her that maybe she was punch drunk. Just then, the missile crews launched the second salvo. Burak had to remind herself to give a commendation to them, since they managed to reload in record time and fire while under significant gravity in the wrong direction. The forward observation crew of a Kiss for Yntil would ve introduced themselves to the rear observation crew of the Crundalt attack ship, or maybe tossed a grenade across the gap, if they hadn t been falling in the wrong direction, wrenched around their waists by their safety lines. For the better part of a quarter of a second, and for what felt like a full minute, they were less than fifteen meters apart. The blasts from the impacts on one ship caused minor injuries to the other ship as the two battered each other, one with main cannonade and firepower and the other with rearward chasers. Both craft strained under the pressures. As the two craft finally parted company, like dancers with one partner spinning out into a twirl, a Kiss for Yntil managed a second missile launch. This time, both missiles struck the rear side of the Crundalt cruiser, blowing huge pieces off of it. The forward observation crew of a Kiss for Yntil was happier now – if they had introduced themselves, they d have known the names of those flight staff now dead. An echoing whine sounded, the sound of metal crushing, as portions of the craft became structurally unsound. Continued hammering showed that the Crundalt craft s shots were still finding marks, and the strain of the maneuver had just jeopardized hull integrity. A subsequent sound of something metal getting gashed across the ship confirmed that the hull s structural stability was completely gone. The ship would, sooner or later, fall apart. That was just what Radley reported to Burak. She paused for a moment, and saw that the Crundalt craft was continuing its turn about. It was still going to try to meet its foe face-on. In its present condition… it could still withstand a full volley before going down, and she couldn t get herself behind it a third time, so it would have many more guns on her. “Visturen, can you hear me?” “Yes, ma am.” She sounded rather far away, but it occurred to Burak that she may have lost hearing. “All jets to rear, nose up twenty and full burn for a half second. Then cut all lift and thrust.” Visturen paused, then completed the command sequence. “Dragonfly, confirmed.” Captain Yeago picked himself up from the slump he ended up forming in his seat. The sudden repeated impacts of some super-heavy explosives lurched the ship in all the wrong ways. He turned to the helmsman, who was now unconscious, his safety line having snapped allowing him to pitch head-first into his control panel. Someone was pulling him out and sitting down in his place. “Helm, continue bringing us about and face this bitch. Burcante, set all guns to fire the moment they have arc.” Moran coughed and choked out a call, “Attack ship is gaining elevation and bearing us on the horizontal.” Yeago didn t have time to reply. Just then, the Fow attack ship dropped down directly on top of the aft of the Krushaltsha, having hopped into the air and then cut all lift and thrust. Retaining forward momentum and impelled by gravity, the craft shattered against the stern hull of the larger Krushaltsha, causing the Krushaltsha to angle upwards at the nose. The reverberation hit like a solid object throughout the craft, throwing people backwards and knocking them to the ground. The nose pitched up twenty degrees as the exploding wreckage of the Fow vessel finally slid off and let go, letting the vessel come to rights. Yeago looked around the bridge, seeing it in general disarray. He realized he was on the ground, his chair having dislodged from the floor. He disconnected the safety straps and got up. “Is anybody awake? Sound off!” One deck hand walked over to telemetry. “Sir… I, ah… there s a large ship bearing down on us, sir.” Yeago paused. “A large ship?” Then he remembered. There was a term for what Captain Nara just saw – an aerial “death from above” ramming attack. It was called a “dragonfly s mating charge.” There was also a word for what she was about to do. It was called “killing a cripple.” “Main guns fire.” At long range, the rocket launches on the Beauty of the Bullet were not especially accurate. Still, she only needed one to hit, and one did hit, directly into the weakened stern of the cruiser. The missile managed to penetrate into the guts of the craft before detonating. The blast came out the front of the craft, and the whole thing split apart like a banana skin on a stick of dynamite. The wreckage mostly landed on top of the wreckage of a Kiss for Yntil. The Battle of Folio Greens ended indecisively, with both sides eventually withdrawing, leaving behind people they could not transport. The running gag is that they ended up forming a massive nudist commune and becoming licentious sex addicts. The reality is winter set in, and they formed a single community for warmth and to pool their supplies. By the time relief came, they couldn t tell who was Fow and who was Crundalt. The battle goes down in history as demonstrating the potential maneuverability and firepower of the Dzazd, and also for bringing us the name for a new maneuver, called the Folio Reverse or Folio Facing.

第九話/ /第十話*② 第十話 執筆者:柊南天 Three years ago... 肺が爛れたように熱く、息は浅く短くでしか続かない。両脚も鋼鉄の足枷を嵌められたように重い。だが、それに対して焦燥を迫る必要性はない。無視できる。年月の経過に伴って老衰を経てきた身体を酷使し、残骸の散らばる連結通路を疾っていく。 戦場の一線を退いてから8年が経過して尚、あらゆる身体機能を現役時代のそれと同等に扱えるよう、研鑽を重ねてきた。しかしそれを鑑みてすら、今回の一連の騒乱を生き抜いた暁には、心肺機能の一部くらいは人工臓器に置換すべきだろうと、そう考えた。一線を退いたとはいえ、老衰を騙し続けている生身の人間のままでは、戦場に身を置き続けるには非常な困難を迫られるだろう。 ──北棟兵器格納庫に直接繋がる連結通路に漂う臭気を鼻腔が捉え、床上に散らばる瓦礫の残骸に交じって倒れている警邏部隊の兵士達の亡骸を一瞥した。 一時間前に始まったミラージュ社陸軍空挺強襲部隊による最初期の制圧攻撃によって、本研究施設の機能維持に当たっていたナーヴス・コンコード社の派遣人材と兵力はその大半が損失している。 前方の床に染み渡る赤黒い血溜まりを一投足で軽く飛び越え、ひたすらに先を急ぐ。 連結通路の外部──航空施設の滑走路一帯で火線が交えられ、耳に取り付けたインカムから混線状態の無線が垂れ流しで聞こえてくる。 「エスタブリッシュメント共も翌々、無茶が好きなようだな……」 財団創設に噛んだあの頃から、既に明白になっていた可能性の一類に過ぎない。今更にも別段驚く事ではないだろうと、しかし、余りに誰もが描いた筋書き通りに事実が展開している現実に、図らずもわずかに嘆息してしまった。 財団解体は最早免れ得ぬ要諦だ。それを持って、是まで培われてきた叡智が支配企業どもへ流出する結果に、その是非を問う真似などはしない。しかし──、 「私には、私の成すべき夢想がある──」 外部から聞こえてくる砲声の応酬とは別の銃声と煌きが連結通路の終着である角の先から溢れ、両手に提げていたブルバップ式突撃小銃の銃口を跳ね上げた。甲高い音を上げていたパンプスの足音を速やかに断ち、連結通路の壁に背中を預ける。壁から染み出した極寒の外気が背中に触れ、じっとりと浮かんでいた汗を急速に冷やしていく。 壁際から顔をのぞかせる。連結通路先の兵器格納庫に繋がる自動扉の前に立っていたシルエットが、足元で瀕死状態になって倒れているコンコード兵士の頭部に向け、手に握っていた自動拳銃の引き金を引いた。その残響音が連結通路に反響すると同時に身を飛び出し、構えた得物の銃口をシルエットの胴体部へ突き付ける。 「よくも此処まで逃げ延びたものだな、──ハスラーワン」 足元に転がるコンコード社の亡骸を見下していた大柄な黒い影──自身がハスラーワンと呼んだ壮年の男は、特別な反応をする訳でもなく、むしろ緩慢とした挙動でゆるりと振り返る。一旦夜闇の中に溶け込んでしまえば、忽ちの内にその姿を消してしまうような相手の姿が、瞬く蛍光灯の下に浮かび上がる。垂らしたアッシュブロンドの総髪の隙間、妖しい光を放つ毒々しい蘇芳色の眸が厭に映えて見えた。 危険な意志を孕んだ眸だ。これまで幾度となく、そんな意図を宿した人間を見てきた。此処に及んで、彼がその意志を宿すとは、中々に皮肉なものだと胸中で苦笑いした。彼自身がこの数十年間で駆逐してきた意思と同様のものを、彼が宿しているのだ。 右手にだらんと下げた自動拳銃を持ち上げる予備動作を見せる気配はなく、代わりに彼の左腕に抱きかかえられた幼い"少女"の眠たげな相貌が、こちらをどこという訳でもなく見つめている。 時間にして僅か数秒程度の静寂が微弱な震動を繰り返す連結通路を包み込み、それから、それまで微動だにしていなかったハスラーワンがその口を開いた 「──やはり生き残っていたか、技術文化特別顧問?」 「この混乱で、何所へなりと失せるつもりか。貴様の死体がなければ、企業共はすぐに勘付くだろう?」 ブルバップ式小銃の引き金にかけた人差し指に力を込め、ハスラーワンと共に視界に収まっている少女と視線を重ねた。この騒乱の状況の全容と結末を既に把握しているかのように、彼女の眼は諦観にも似た穏やかさを湛え、眠たげな視線を維持している。 そんな彼女を抱きかかえた巨躯の男は、形容し難い笑みを口許に浮かべ、 「戦場より去ぬつもりなどはない。私達烏が下りる時は、戦場でその死を持ってのみ実現される。……尤も、特別顧問──お前は少し異なるかもしれんがな……」 練達した口調を持って彼は言い、明らかな殺意を持って向けた銃口など自分に向けられているものではないとでもいうような足取りで、兵器格納庫に繋がる自動扉の方へ踵を返そうとする。 「動くな──!」 一瞬の間断も逡巡もなく引き金を絞った。銃声が連結通路の高い天井に反響し、小口径の弾丸がハスラーワンの足元の床を削って壁に別の弾痕を穿つ。 「聞け、ハスラーワン。──私は過去を追う。その為なら、此処でお前を殺す事も厭わん。その娘も同様だ……」 先程の挙動と同じく、一抹の逡巡すらない意思を相貌に湛えて彼を睨み据える。彼の首に細い腕を回す少女の華奢な身体が僅かに震えているのが、未だ衰えを見せない肉眼で目視できた。 「暗部から生まれたモノが最期に還るのは、同じ暗部でなければならんだろう。……四十年間続いた螺旋に私がピリオドを打たねばならないのなら、それもまた道理なのかもしれん……。父の望みに反するとしても、私はそれを許容する事は到底できん」 「……微かに記憶に残っている。あの時の娘──ノウラ、お前だったか。では、尚更私は此処を離れねばならんな……」 「まだ五つかそこらだったろうに。よく覚えていたものだな……」 三十四年前の古い記憶──私自身、十を数えたか其処らで記憶自体も曖昧なものでしかない。だがこの男が──生まれたばかり"この子"が、私の家に迎え入れらた日の事はよく覚えている。 ──コード:ヴェイロン・アプローチ。 三十四年前、数百例以上にも及ぶ失敗作の犠牲の上に人為的に生み出された彼と共に、数年間という短い年月だったが、支配企業の意向によって父が謀殺するまでを生きた。 少女を抱え爪先を自動扉に向けたハスラーワンは、肩を軽くすくめてみせる。そして、右手に携えていた自動拳銃を持ち上げた。銃口をくい、と動かして、 「……別々の生涯を生きた。私は企業の駒として。お前は過去を追う烏として。他人と言って差し支えはあるまい。しかし、極点の始まりで交わった事は、或いはお前の言う道理だったのかもしれん」 「ならば、その道理に従え……。──私に、お前を殺させるな」 「ならば、道理に従え……。──私に、お前を殺させるな」 それは果断による意思とは関係ない、別な本意から吐露された苦渋の言葉。私自身、驚きはしなかった。代わりにハスラーワンが多少の驚きを交えた眼差しを作り、口許にまた例の形容しがたい笑みを浮かべてみせる。 「さらばだ、私の唯一の家族……。私は彼女と共に往く。お前であろうと誰であろうと、止めさせはしない。──企業共の眼を覚まさせてやろう。淘汰されて来た歴史の切情を、思い知らせてやろう」 激情と呼べるほどの強い意志を鋭い眼差しから湛え、迷いなく彼は踵を返す。私は無意識のうちに提げていた銃口を再度跳ね上げ、引き金を── 聴覚と視覚を一瞬聾する砲火と砲声が吹き荒び、ハスラーワンとの間に空いていた前方通路が右手の外壁から吹き飛んだ。火線交じりの瓦礫片が巻き上がる噴煙の中で暴れ回り、やがて噴煙の銀幕を破るように一機の鋼鉄の巨体が崩れ落ちた連絡通路の縁から姿を現した。 砂嵐のようなノイズ音が周囲一帯に満ち、機体搭載のスピーカーから僅かに聞き覚えのある声が漏れる。 『彼の邪魔はさせない……』 「──ファントムヘイズ。貴様も総意を翻すか……」 真冬の寒風が噴煙を急速に攫い、連絡通路に介入してきたプロトタイプ・ネクスト──ファントムヘイズ──の姿を見上げ、さらにその後背上空を飛行していた群列が視界に映った。複数の警護用ガンシップと輸送ヘリから構成されたその空輸部隊は牽引ロープに一機の機体を吊るして、今まさに本研究施設から離脱しようとしていた。 三年前に開始された計画の中で、無数に製造されてきたプロトタイプネクストの始祖── 「ナインボール・セラフ……。統一政府め、第一種凍結資材まで持ち去るつもりか……!」 視界の隅から去ろうとするその光景に意識を捕られ、次に視線を崩れた連結通路の先へ向けた時には、少女を抱えた"弟"の姿はなかった。両腕に抱えた得物の銃口を頭上へ持ち上げ、ファントムヘイズへ突き付ける。 「支配企業に敵意を向けて、お前達は何をする。世の絶対律に挑む気か?」 ファントムヘイズのコクピット内で、過度のAMS接続負荷により既に意識継続の際まで追い込まれているのだろう彼は、しかし、毅然たる態度を保って言う。 『兵器災害の発生は、淘汰された過去からの天祐だ……。私達はそれに従う。あの人なら、世界を覆せる……。──俺は、そう信じている』 その言葉を最後にスピーカー音が途切れ、代わりに北棟兵器格納庫の正面ゲートが内部から放たれた重火力の砲火によって撃ち破られる。続けてコジマ・ジェネレータ特有の稼働音が周囲に響き、圧倒的な加速度を持ってハスラーワンの駆るプロトタイプネクスト・"ナインボール"が格納庫内から発進した。 白緑色の噴射炎を後方ノズルから吐き出し、上空に浮上したナインボールは戦火によって照らし出された夜半の曇天の中へ瞬く間埋もれていった。それを見送ったファントムヘイズもまた、眼前の連結通路の縁から離れ、彼の軌跡を追うようにオーバード・ブーストを起動して戦域を速やかに離脱していった。 連結通路の縁に立ち、薄汚れたジャケットのポケットからソフトパックを取り、紙巻煙草を抜き出して咥える。使い込んだ銀製のオイルライターで先端に紅点を灯し、濃い味ばかりが目立つ紫煙を肺腑へ深く沁み渡らせた。ゆるゆると流れ続ける冷風に乗せて紫煙を吐き出すと、それらは風に絡め取られてすぐに掻き消えていった。 「総意に牙を剥くか……。私は決して降りんぞ。淘汰の螺旋の中で、必ず【過去の根源】を捉えてみせる」 ──"弟"を作った父もかつてそう言っていた。我々を常に先回る過去、それをいつか待ち受けて受け止める義務が我々にはあるのだと。 インカムに無線が入り、短くなった煙草を連絡通路の縁から真下の地上へ投げ捨てた。 『間もなくミラージュ社陸軍の制圧部隊が投入される。第四兵器格納庫に機体を移送しておいた。既に動発準備は完結済みだ。急げ、ノウラ…… 「了解。現時刻を持って作戦行動を完結、現戦域からの機動離脱へ移行する。……ファントムヘイズも往ったよ、ガロ……」 『そうか……』 「なあ、ガロ……?」 「……どうした」 ターミナル・スフィア隷下の所属レイヴンとして共に実務をこなす同僚に言葉を投げかける。新しい煙草を抜きだしつつ、踵を返して元来た道を走りだす。 「──何でもない。すまなかった」 この夜を境に、支配企業群により共同出資運営されていた旧世代技術解析財団【ジシス財団】は、技術占有を狙った支配企業群同士の撹乱工作によって苛烈な内紛を幾度となく繰り返し、結果として組織的解体を迎える。 財団内で培われた【ARMORED CORE NEXT】に関連する多くの叡智は各企業に分散し、以降、ネクスト兵器の開発競争が激化していく事となった。 内紛勃発の混乱に紛れ、プロトタイプネクスト・ナインボールと一人の少女を強奪したプロジェクト参画体・ハスラーワは財団離反後、執拗に送り込まれた企業の追撃部隊を振り切り、公的にその消息を暗ました。 →Next… ② コメントフォーム 名前 コメント

CHAPTER XXXV UP CHAPTER XXXVII CHAPTER XXXVI The Glory and the Dream On the morning when the final results of all the examinations were to be posted on the bulletin board at Queen s, Anne and Jane walked down the street together. Jane was smiling and happy; examinations were over and she was comfortably sure she had made a pass at least; further considerations troubled Jane not at all; she had no soaring ambitions and consequently was not affected with the unrest attendant thereon. For we pay a price for everything we get or take in this world; and although ambitions are well worth having, they are not to be cheaply won, but exact their dues of work and self-denial, anxiety and discouragement. Anne was pale and quiet; in ten more minutes she would know who had won the medal and who the Avery. Beyond those ten minutes there did not seem, just then, to be anything worth being called Time. "Of course you ll win one of them anyhow," said Jane, who couldn t understand how the faculty could be so unfair as to order it otherwise. "I have not hope of the Avery," said Anne. "Everybody says Emily Clay will win it. And I m not going to march up to that bulletin board and look at it before everybody. I haven t the moral courage. I m going straight to the girls dressing room. You must read the announcements and then come and tell me, Jane. And I implore you in the name of our old friendship to do it as quickly as possible. If I have failed just say so, without trying to break it gently; and whatever you do DON T sympathize with me. Promise me this, Jane." Jane promised solemnly; but, as it happened, there was no necessity for such a promise. When they went up the entrance steps of Queen s they found the hall full of boys who were carrying Gilbert Blythe around on their shoulders and yelling at the tops of their voices, "Hurrah for Blythe, Medalist!" For a moment Anne felt one sickening pang of defeat and disappointment. So she had failed and Gilbert had won! Well, Matthew would be sorry--he had been so sure she would win. And then! Somebody called out "Three cheers for Miss Shirley, winner of the Avery!" "Oh, Anne," gasped Jane, as they fled to the girls dressing room amid hearty cheers. "Oh, Anne I m so proud! Isn t it splendid?" And then the girls were around them and Anne was the center of a laughing, congratulating group. Her shoulders were thumped and her hands shaken vigorously. She was pushed and pulled and hugged and among it all she managed to whisper to Jane "Oh, won t Matthew and Marilla be pleased! I must write the news home right away." Commencement was the next important happening. The exercises were held in the big assembly hall of the Academy. Addresses were given, essays read, songs sung, the public award of diplomas, prizes and medals made. Matthew and Marilla were there, with eyes and ears for only one student on the platform--a tall girl in pale green, with faintly flushed cheeks and starry eyes, who read the best essay and was pointed out and whispered about as the Avery winner. "Reckon you re glad we kept her, Marilla?" whispered Matthew, speaking for the first time since he had entered the hall, when Anne had finished her essay. "It s not the first time I ve been glad," retorted Marilla. "You do like to rub things in, Matthew Cuthbert." Miss Barry, who was sitting behind them, leaned forward and poked Marilla in the back with her parasol. "Aren t you proud of that Anne-girl? I am," she said. Anne went home to Avonlea with Matthew and Marilla that evening. She had not been home since April and she felt that she could not wait another day. The apple blossoms were out and the world was fresh and young. Diana was at Green Gables to meet her. In her own white room, where Marilla had set a flowering house rose on the window sill, Anne looked about her and drew a long breath of happiness. "Oh, Diana, it s so good to be back again. It s so good to see those pointed firs coming out against the pink sky-- and that white orchard and the old Snow Queen. Isn t the breath of the mint delicious? And that tea rose--why, it s a song and a hope and a prayer all in one. And it s GOOD to see you again, Diana!" "I thought you liked that Stella Maynard better than me," said Diana reproachfully. "Josie Pye told me you did. Josie said you were INFATUATED with her." Anne laughed and pelted Diana with the faded "June lilies" of her bouquet. "Stella Maynard is the dearest girl in the world except one and you are that one, Diana," she said. "I love you more than ever--and I ve so many things to tell you. But just now I feel as if it were joy enough to sit here and look at you. I m tired, I think--tired of being studious and ambitious. I mean to spend at least two hours tomorrow lying out in the orchard grass, thinking of absolutely nothing." "You ve done splendidly, Anne. I suppose you won t be teaching now that you ve won the Avery?" "No. I m going to Redmond in September. Doesn t it seem wonderful? I ll have a brand new stock of ambition laid in by that time after three glorious, golden months of vacation. Jane and Ruby are going to teach. Isn t it splendid to think we all got through even to Moody Spurgeon and Josie Pye?" "The Newbridge trustees have offered Jane their school already," said Diana. "Gilbert Blythe is going to teach, too. He has to. His father can t afford to send him to college next year, after all, so he means to earn his own way through. I expect he ll get the school here if Miss Ames decides to leave." Anne felt a queer little sensation of dismayed surprise. She had not known this; she had expected that Gilbert would be going to Redmond also. What would she do without their inspiring rivalry? Would not work, even at a coeducational college with a real degree in prospect, be rather flat without her friend the enemy? The next morning at breakfast it suddenly struck Anne that Matthew was not looking well. Surely he was much grayer than he had been a year before. "Marilla," she said hesitatingly when he had gone out, "is Matthew quite well?" "No, he isn t," said Marilla in a troubled tone. "He s had some real bad spells with his heart this spring and he won t spare himself a mite. I ve been real worried about him, but he s some better this while back and we ve got a good hired man, so I m hoping he ll kind of rest and pick up. Maybe he will now you re home. You always cheer him up." Anne leaned across the table and took Marilla s face in her hands. "You are not looking as well yourself as I d like to see you, Marilla. You look tired. I m afraid you ve been working too hard. You must take a rest, now that I m home. I m just going to take this one day off to visit all the dear old spots and hunt up my old dreams, and then it will be your turn to be lazy while I do the work." Marilla smiled affectionately at her girl. "It s not the work--it s my head. I ve got a pain so often now--behind my eyes. Doctor Spencer s been fussing with glasses, but they don t do me any good. There is a distinguished oculist coming to the Island the last of June and the doctor says I must see him. I guess I ll have to. I can t read or sew with any comfort now. Well, Anne, you ve done real well at Queen s I must say. To take First Class License in one year and win the Avery scholarship--well, well, Mrs. Lynde says pride goes before a fall and she doesn t believe in the higher education of women at all; she says it unfits them for woman s true sphere. I don t believe a word of it. Speaking of Rachel reminds me--did you hear anything about the Abbey Bank lately, Anne?" "I heard it was shaky," answered Anne. "Why?" "That is what Rachel said. She was up here one day last week and said there was some talk about it. Matthew felt real worried. All we have saved is in that bank--every penny. I wanted Matthew to put it in the Savings Bank in the first place, but old Mr. Abbey was a great friend of father s and he d always banked with him. Matthew said any bank with him at the head of it was good enough for anybody." "I think he has only been its nominal head for many years," said Anne. "He is a very old man; his nephews are really at the head of the institution." "Well, when Rachel told us that, I wanted Matthew to draw our money right out and he said he d think of it. But Mr. Russell told him yesterday that the bank was all right." Anne had her good day in the companionship of the outdoor world. She never forgot that day; it was so bright and golden and fair, so free from shadow and so lavish of blossom. Anne spent some of its rich hours in the orchard; she went to the Dryad s Bubble and Willowmere and Violet Vale; she called at the manse and had a satisfying talk with Mrs. Allan; and finally in the evening she went with Matthew for the cows, through Lovers Lane to the back pasture. The woods were all gloried through with sunset and the warm splendor of it streamed down through the hill gaps in the west. Matthew walked slowly with bent head; Anne, tall and erect, suited her springing step to his. "You ve been working too hard today, Matthew," she said reproachfully. "Why won t you take things easier?" "Well now, I can t seem to," said Matthew, as he opened the yard gate to let the cows through. "It s only that I m getting old, Anne, and keep forgetting it. Well, well, I ve always worked pretty hard and I d rather drop in harness." "If I had been the boy you sent for," said Anne wistfully, "I d be able to help you so much now and spare you in a hundred ways. I could find it in my heart to wish I had been, just for that." "Well now, I d rather have you than a dozen boys, Anne," said Matthew patting her hand. "Just mind you that-- rather than a dozen boys. Well now, I guess it wasn t a boy that took the Avery scholarship, was it? It was a girl--my girl--my girl that I m proud of." He smiled his shy smile at her as he went into the yard. Anne took the memory of it with her when she went to her room that night and sat for a long while at her open window, thinking of the past and dreaming of the future. Outside the Snow Queen was mistily white in the moonshine; the frogs were singing in the marsh beyond Orchard Slope. Anne always remembered the silvery, peaceful beauty and fragrant calm of that night. It was the last night before sorrow touched her life; and no life is ever quite the same again when once that cold, sanctifying touch has been laid upon it. Only trackers with constraints are listed, along with what they are locked to (coordinates or another tracker). The solved position is shown, along with the3-D errorof the constraint. For example, if a tracker is located at (1,0,0) but is locked to (0,0,0), the 3-D error will be 1. It will have a completely different 2-D error in hpix on the coordinate system panel. The constrained points view lets you check your constraints after solving, giving you the resulting 3-D errors, or check your setup before solving, without any error available yet. You can select the trackers directly from this view and tweak them with the coordinate system panel displayed. Upside-down Cameras Selecting the Desired Solution Many coordinate system setups can be satisfied in two or more different ways completely different camera and tracker positions that are camera matches, and satisfy the constraints. To review, the most basic 3-point setup consists of a point locked to the origin and a point locked to a specific coordinate on the X axis, plus a third point locked to be somewhere on the ground plane (XY plane for Z-up). This setup can be satisfied two different ways. If you start from one solution, you can get the other by rotating the entire scene 180 degrees around the X axis. If the camera is upright in the first solution, it will be upside-down in the second. The third point will have a Y coordinate that is positive in one, and negative in the other (for Z-Up coordinates). If you take this basic 3-point setup, and chase the setup of the second point from a lock to (20,0,0) to “On X Axis,” and add a separate distance (scale) constraint, there are nowfourdifferent possible solutions the different combinations of the second point s X being positive or negative, and the third point s Y coordinate being positive or negative. SynthEyes offers two ways to control which solution is used. Without specific instructions, SynthEyes uses the solution where the camera is upright, not upside-down. That handles the most common case, but if you need the camera upside-down, or have a setup with four solutions, you need to be more specific. SynthEyes lets you specify whether a coordinate should be positive or negative (a polarity), for each coordinate of each constrained tracker. The Coordinate System Control panel has buttons next to the X, Y, and Z spinners. The X button, for example, sequences from X to X+ to X-, meaning that X can have either polarity, that X must be positive, or that X must be negative. If there are two solutions, you should set up a polarity for an axis of one point; if there are four solutions, set the polarity for one axis of two points. For example, set a polarity for Y of the 3rdtracker, and an X polarity for the 2nd(on-axis) tracker. Subtleties and Pitfalls The locks between two trackers are inherently bidirectional. If you lock A to B,do not lock B to A. Similarly, avoid loops, such as locking A to B, B to C, and C to A. If you want to lock A, B, C, and D all to be on the same ground plane with the same height, say, it is enough to lock B, C, and D all to A. When you choose coordinates, you should keep the scene near the origin. If your scene is 2000 units across, but it is located 100000 units from the origin, it will be inconvenient to work with, and runs the risk of numeric inaccuracy. This can happen after importing scene coordinates based on GPS readings. You can use the Track/Shift Constraints tool to offset the scene back towards the origin.
