How to Draw Legs – The Adductors 脚の描き方-内転筋群 https //www.youtube.com/watch?v=mxMG11ikG3s https //www.proko.com/how-to-draw-legs-the-adductors/#.W5sTnej7Q-U Hi, I m Stan Prokopenko, and this is Proko. We re done having fun with butts. This lesson isn t as stinky, though it s close. We ll study the inner leg muscles - the adductors and sartorius. They re in the upper inner part of the leg. The inguinal ligament separates them from the abs, ASIS to pubic symphysis. The long sartorius muscle separates the adductors from the quads diagonally. The border in the back is not as obvious. It fades away into fat and then suddenly it s the hamstrings. Though in certain poses and mostly on athletic people, you might see where the adductor magnus pops out at the top. It can separate the form of the adductors from the hamstrings. This little section is called the femoral triangle and has nerves, veins, arteries, lymph nodes, and the adductor area in general is prone to having more fat. All this stuff softens the inner leg muscles. This is actually good news for us because we don t need to know the individual adductor muscles, just their overall form and occasionally some tendons toward the top. So, let s get familiar with the simple forms. You know I love simple forms... Up to this point in this course and the figure drawing course, we ve been drawing leg s as simple cylinders, maybe with a bit of taper, getting thinner toward the knee. And that s fine for starting our drawings. But now, since we re learning leg anatomy, we need to be able to take that cylinder and make it into... a leg! Let s say we have this seated pose, legs coming at us. Looking at a cross section, we ll see three main muscle groups. Quadriceps, hamstrings, and adductors. This video is about adductors, so let s group the quads and hamstrings into one large mass. Now, let s look at how a leg is different from a cylinder. In the middle everything is very meaty. You start seeing that indent on the inside where the adductor group attaches to the quads. The front plane is tall and round as the quads project out. Near the knee, the leg isn t cylindrical at all. It s more boxy. The top is meaty, with the quads, and the back is tendinous, with two powerful hamstring tendons on the sides. So, the corners of the box are sharper in the back. It s like a slice of bread. The main mass of the quads and hamstrings is boxy and short at the knee and grows much taller and egg-shaped at the hip. The adductors are like a secondary mass that attach on the inside, shaped like a cone or a wedge. You can see how it s separate from the rest of the leg mass especially in a seated pose like this. The adductor mass hangs down off the leg. The long sartorius muscle actually rounds it out a bit. Without it, the indent between these two forms would be even sharper. Also keep in mind that this area is a major fat storage area. So, that adds to the form and softens the borders. The sartorius is a great rhythm diagonally across the leg. You ll see it as an oblique side plane. So, when we look at it with Bridgman glasses, the quads are a front plane, the sartorius is a side plane, and then the adductors make a triangular front plane, and another side plane as they wrap around to the back. We have 2 "steps" when we think of the front of the leg planarly. The sartorius and the TFL we learned about last time create this hollow triangle into which the quads dive in to. Sometimes you ll see this as an indent, but usually just as a flat vertical plane. Remember that the leg cylinder doesn t start at the ASIS point of the pelvis. We need to drop this vertical for the TFL and sartorius, and then start the leg cylinder a few inches down. See, here it is. Here s another one. The inside of the leg gets this double curve. Look for that when you re designing the flow down the leg. Remember how we talked about asymmetry in the limbs. The contours zig zag down the leg. Because female pelvises are wider, the adductor origins are farther apart. So thin females may have a "thigh gap". Here s a good example of it. Like I said, the simple form is the most important thing to learn about the adductors. There s just a few tendons that you ll commonly see. Usually when the legs are spread apart, thinning out the fat and pulling the tendons tight. You ll see the tendons of the adductors at their origin. Here s a few more example. Ooooh. Aaaah. Assignment 課題 Your assignment is to do quicksketch drawings of the legs from the model photos I ve provided in the description below. Start with the gesture then focus on drawing the forms of the muscle groups, especially the adductors. We haven t studied the others yet, so you can keep them as gestural lines, or cylindrical. But don t just copy the contours.

Don t be afraid of having two geometries, it s going to be fixed with new tools. Oxygen(BIツール名)では、このLODの名前を表示できません。 Just the main body of car should be in this lod, wheels are added by engine later LOD There should be an axis for each wheel named wheel_X_Y_axis (X is position of wheel from front, Y is 1 for left and 2 for right), the name is defined in selected wheel as center There should be a point at the edge of each wheel named wheel_X_Y_bound which is used to determine wheel radius (distance from wheel axis is used for this) - there is no other need than placing the point at the edge, even memory points for tracks could be used for this, the name is defined in selected wheel as boundary physx bound.jpg Mirrors and screens should have their camera position defined in pipX_pos and direction in pipX_dir - parameters pointPosition and pointDirection in class RenderTargets Reflectors should have their position defined in LightCarHeadYXX (Y is a side - R/L, XX is a number) and direction defined in LightCarHeadYXX_end LightCarHeadYXX_end でその方向を定義します。 Mirrors and screens should have RTT texture #(argb,256,512,1)r2t(rendertargetX,1.0) - where X in rendertarget should be a number Randomly generated accessories should have their selections independent on all other selections (mainly the main body and all the glass selections), glass as a part of hide-able accessory should be handled as two separate selections Beacons and markerlights should have their material set to emit light Spare wheel should have defined selections for it, texture underneath and correct hitpoints like a normal wheel Man-held turrets shouldn t be hidden when destroying them without destroying the whole vehicle - IK issues would crash the game Only the dampers are affected by the changes, best way to set them is to place an axis with the length of moveable part alongside the damper and set offsets to +-0.5 ダンパー(サスペンション)は凹凸路面などの影響を受けて可動します。 Example {model.cfg} class Wheel_1_1_Damper { type="translation"; source="damper"; selection="wheel_1_1_damper_land"; axis="posun wheel_1_1"; animPeriod = 1; minValue="0"; maxValue="1"; offset0= "0.5"; offset1= "-0.5"; memory=1; }; ●●●●●●●●●●●●訳 28/Oct/2013●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●●● Sections for hiddenSelectios[] should be set in model.cfg hiddenSelectios[]の部分はmodel.cfgで定義する必要があります。 Following parameters are defined in vehicle class. vehicle classという定義内で以下のパラメーターを使います。 string (required) simulation = "carx"; float 0.0 dampersBumpCoef = 0.3; Differential parameters 他と異なるパラメータ string; accepable values "all_open", "all_limited", "front_open", "front_limited", "rear_open", "rear_limited" "all_limited" differentialType = "all_limited"; float 0.5 frontRearSplit = 0.5 float 1.3 frontBias = 1.3; float 1.3 rearBias = 1.3 float 1.3 centreBias = 1.3 float 10.0 clutchStrength = 10.0; float 0.01 switchTime = 1.01; Engine parameters エンジンパラメータ float (required) enginePower = 600; float 600 which is cca 6000 rounds per minute. maxOmega = 600; float value calculated from enginePower according to http //en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Horsepower#Relationship_with_torque peakTorque = 600; float, float, float 0.08, 2.0, 0.35 dampingRateFullThrottle = 0.08; dampingRateZeroThrottleClutchEngaged = 2.0; dampingRateZeroThrottleClutchDisengaged = 0.35; Array[i][2] where i = number of samples, maximum 8; {{0.0, 0.8}, {0.33, 1.0}, {1.0, 0.8}} torqueCurve[] = {{0.0, 0.8}, {0.33, 1.0}, {1.0, 0.8}}; Wheel parameters ホイールパラメータ This parameters relates to each wheel. These are the parameters that could be defined in that subclasses. General parameters 一般的なパラメータ string "" boneName = "wheel_1_1"; bool (required) steering = true; string "right" side = "left"; Wheel PX parameters ホイールPXパラメータ memory point (required) center = "wheel_1_1_axis"; memory point (required) boundary = "wheel_1_1_bound"; float 0.3*(raidus of the wheel) width = "0.2"; float 10.0 mass = 150; float 0.5 * WheelMass * WheelRadius * WheelRadius MOI = 40; float 0.1 dampingRate = 0.1; float 2500 maxBrakeTorque = 7500; float 2*maxBrakeTorque maxHandBrakeTorque = 0 Wheel simulation parameters ホイールシミュレーションパラメータ Array[3] {0, -1, 0} suspTravelDirection[] = {0, -1, 0}; memory point center suspForceAppPointOffset = "wheel_1_1_axis"; memory point suspForceAppPointOffset tireForceAppPointOffset = "wheel_1_1_axis"; Suspension parameters サスペンションパラメータ float 0.15 maxCompression = 0.15; mMaxDroop = 0.15; float vehicleMass/numberOfWheels sprungMass = 2066; float sprungMass*5,0*5,0 springStrength = 51653; float 0,4*2*sqrt(springStrength*sprungMass) springDamperRate = 8264; Tire parameters タイヤパラメータ float 10000 longitudinalStiffnessPerUnitGravity = 10000; float, float 25, 180 latStiffX = 25; latStiffY = 180; Array[3][2] {{0, 1}, {0.5, 1}, {1,1}} frictionVsSlipGraph[] = {{0, 1}, {0.5, 1}, {1,1}}; Floating and sinking 浮き沈み(水で) WaterLeakiness should be amount of water in liters that goes into selected object per second. This is set to zero by engine for all vehicles with simulation of a ship or having canFloat = 1 (unless they are toppled of destroyed, then config value takes precedence). WaterLeakiness = 10; seems to be a good value to start with for all kinds of vehicles no matter the size (which is a bit spooky, but it works). PhysX 3 integration PhysX3で統合 WheelMask ホイールマスク thrustDelay is time in second in which thrust goes from 0 to 1 when standing still (doesn t affect driving car during change of gears), 0.2 seems to be a reasonable value. You may want to tweak this to higher values if wheels slide during initial acceleration. brakeIdleSpeed is speed in m/s under which the brakes are automatically applied to the vehicle. This speed should be reasonably low, higher value would mean strange breaking of slow cars, too low value would cause inability to stop the car. idleRpm sets the idle RPM of engine. Primary use is for sound engine redRpm sets the maximum for engine RPM, should be according to maxOmega (see later) Anti-roll bars is the system in vehicle that should prevent it to do a barrel-roll during sharper turns. Using ARB enables us to make center of mass realistically high and cause cars to roll down the steep slopes if placed sideways to the slope. It works the same way as the real ones - system computes difference of applied weight to wheels in pair and tries to compensate difference by applying opposite forces. antiRollbarForceCoef is a coefficient of applied force, could be taken as strength of the system. Setting this value to zero disables ARB (and all next values), which is good for civilian vehicles, higher values reduce not only the risk of rolling, but effects of suspension. antiRollbarForceLimit is the highest strength of ARB applied to vehicle. We may want to roll the car at certain situations (full van taking sharp hand-brake turn at high speed), tunning without diag mode is almost impossible because we are not able to imagine forces needed (values are rather low, 2 should be high enough for most of vehicles) antiRollbarSpeedMin and antiRollbarSpeedMax are limits of applied force coefficient. Coefficient is 0 at speeds lower than antiRollbarSpeedMin, interpolates to antiRollbarForceCoef at antiRollbarSpeedMax and is set to antiRollbarForceCoef for any higher speeds. This allows cars to drive on steep slopes using their radial speed, falling of the hill once they stop and rolling over at too high speeds (where coefficient doesn t grow and force is limited by the limit). antiRollbarForceCoefの上下限をantiRollbarSpeedMinとantiRollbarSpeedMaxで定義します。 All PhysX 3 vehicles use complex gearbox to give some data to PhysX gearbox PhysX3の車両は全部ギアボックスが搭載されてます。 Complex gearbox settings is inside class complexGearbox which is a subclass of vehicle class GearboxRatios[] is an array of gear names and gear ratios starting with reverse gear (with negative ratios), neutral gear (which should have zero ratio) and forward ratio (eg {"R1",-3.231,"N",0,"D1",2.462,"D2",1.870,"D3",1.241,"D4",0.970,"D5",0.711};). Gear names are not used in retail version, they are just for epevehicle diagnostics R1がバックで、Nニュートラル(数字入れたら勝手に前進します)、D1、D2・・・となります。 TransmissionRatios[] is an array of transmission ratios in the same format as gearboxRatios. Most of cars have only one transmission ratio, some heavy trucks may have two. The final ratio of engine is gearboxRatio * TransmissionRatio, that means transmissionRatios shouldn t be multiplicates of each other and gearbox ratios to prevent the same final ratio for two different gears. ※良く解らん・・・・ gearBoxMode is set to full-auto by engine gearBoxModeはエンジンによってフルオートでセットされます(・・は? イミフ) moveOffGear defines what gear an automatic or semi-automatic gearbox will move off from stationary in. 1 by default. driveString, neutralString and reverseString define displayed strings for driving forward, neutral and backward. -------------------------------------------------------- {config.cpp} class complexGearbox { GearboxRatios[] = {"R1",-3.231,"N",0,"D1",2.462,"D2",1.870,"D3",1.241,"D4",0.970,"D5",0.711}; TransmissionRatios[] = {"High",4.111}; // Optional defines transmission ratios (for example, High and Low range as commonly found in offroad vehicles) moveOffGear = 1; // defines what gear an automatic or semi-automatic gearbox will move off from stationary in. 1 by default. driveString = "D"; // string to display in the HUD for forward gears. neutralString = "N"; // string to display in the HUD for neutral gear. reverseString = "R"; // string to display in the HUD for reverse gears. Some gearbox parameters are defined outside of class complexGearbox, they are mainly to setup automatic gearbox changeGearMinEffectivity[]Value of minimal gear effectivity to hold current gear. If there is better gear and effectivity is below this value then change gear. It is an array of effectivities ordered by gears in complex gearbox. Neutral should have rather low effectivity (0.15 seems to be a good value), drive gears should have rather high value (around 0.95) to prevent switching gears too often switchTimeThe switch time describes how long it takes (in seconds) for a gear change to be completed. RPM interpolate to optimal value for the new gear at current speed during the changing of gears. The time should be rather low, around 0.3 s, to keep the momentum of the car. latencyis the minimum time (in seconds) that must pass between each gear change that is initiated by the autobox. This should be set to value higher than switchTime. Setting this time too low makes some issues with changing gears - the car slows down a lot Different amount of torque coefficients for different speeds of Slow, Forward and Fast are now configurable slowSpeedForwardCoefis set to 0.3 by default normalSpeedForwardCoefis set to 0.85 by default default speed coefficient for fast movement is 1 meaning that full throttle is applied and maximal speed is maxSpeed of the vehicle (it is going to apply less throttle upon reaching the limit) IK for hands and legs It s not Inverse Kinematics in fact, but as close to it as possible. A soldier should have IK defined for hands and legs by default Each vehicle pose using IK should haveleftHandIKCurve[]andrightHandIKCurve[]set to 1 Driver should havedriverLeftHandAnimNameanddriverRightHandAnimNamedefined as drive wheel bone of the vehicle (drivewheelby default) Gunner should havegunnerLeftHandAnimNameandgunnerRightHandAnimNamedefined on handles of the gun, or shaking bone of the weapon shall be sufficient (usually something likeotocHlaven_shake) Double check names of bones if the game crashes upon loading this vehicle and call stack points to IK. Wrong definition causes CTD all the time and removing the bone causes the same (eg. by hiding it). Picture in Picture for screens and mirrors All sources for textures to be rendered on are defined inclass RenderTargetswhich is a subclass of vehicle class Each source is a separate subclass with unique name parameterrenderTargetdefines which texture shall the source be mapped at (only therendertargetXpart is used) class CameraView1is a subclass of this source and contains all the parameters for rendered scene pointPositionandpointDirectionshould be respective memory points in model renderQualityis in range from 0 to 2 and defines quality of rendering for said source renderVisionModedefines the vision mode - 0 = HDR, 1 = NightVision, 2 = ThermalVision, 3 = Color, 4 = Mirror fovdefines field of view of this source {config.cpp} class RenderTargets { class LeftMirror { renderTarget = "rendertarget0"; class CameraView1 { pointPosition = "PIP0_pos"; pointDirection = "PIP0_dir"; renderQuality = 2; renderVisionMode = 0; fov = 0.7; }; }; }; Random visual variants Randomization of variants is done by script ran upon start of mission via init event handler The car should inheritclass EventHandlers EventHandlers {config.cpp} init event handler should be changed to something like this init="(_this select 0) execVM ""\pathToCar\scripts\scriptName.sqf"""; Don t forget to hide all the added accessories upon destruction of vehicle, they are usually in proxies, this is handled by killed event handler {config.cpp} killed = "_this call (uinamespace getvariable BIS_fnc_effectKilled ); _this select 0 animate [""RandomAnimation"",0]; Random variants script All random settings should be done on server side to prevent different car looks for different users {script.sqf} if (isLocal) then {_rnd1 = floor random Y; _this setVariable ["BIS_randomSeed1", _rnd1, TRUE]; _this animate ["RandomAnimation", X];}; Ystands for the number of random variants Even all the animations should be handled server-side to ease clients,RandomAnimationshall be replaced by any animation needed to be randomly chosen,Xstands for animation phase {script.sqf} waitUntil {!(isNil {_this getVariable "BIS_randomSeed1"})}; _randomSeed1 = _this getVariable "BIS_randomSeed1"; Random textures shall be taken with this statement {script.sqf} _this setObjectTexture [0, ["\pathToCar\Data\variant_1_co.paa", ...,"\\pathToCar\Data\variant_Y_co.paa"] select _randomSeed1]; Reflectors, markerlights and beacons Reflectors Reflectors need to be defined inclass Reflectors Default cars should have two reflectors defined as separate subclasses inside class Reflectors. These two classes should differ only inposition, direction, hitpointandselection. Position and direction are self-descriptive, they use memory points in mode, hitpoint is the name of selection in hitpoint lod in model, selection is a visual selection in resolution lods. Most of reflectors should haveuseFlareset to 1, they are bright enough to have a flare. Size of this flare is defined byflareSize, value should be rather low, around 0.1 seems to be good for start. class Attenuationinside each reflector subclass defines behavior of light from distance. Attenuation is combination ofconstant, linearandquadraticcoefficient, startis a distance from position where attenuation starts to work (the light is at it s full strength if distance is lower than start). aggregateReflectors[]outside of Reflectors class is used to ease computing of too many light sources and combines light together. Both reflectors should be aggregated for a default car but feel free to experiment. Just run some FPS test after testing non-standard settings. Markerlights Markerlights are purely model side based on assigned emissive materials Beacons Beacons consist of two parts on model side - emissive one and unlit one. The emissive one is hidden by default by an user controller and periodically hidden by time controller in model.cfg Config contains only user actions to turn beacons off/on by hiding/unhiding them, this is insideclass UserActions UserActions There should be two actions per beacons set - one to turn them off and other to turn them on, each as a subclass of UserActions {config.cpp} class UserActions UserActions { class beacons_start { userActionID = 50; displayName = "Beacons start"; displayNameDefault = ""; position = "mph_axis"; radius = 1.8; animPeriod = 2; onlyForplayer = false; condition = "this animationPhase ""BeaconsStart"" 0.5 AND Alive(this) AND driver this == player"; statement = "this animate [""BeaconsStart"",1];"; }; class beacons_stop beacons_start { userActionID = 51; displayName = "Beacons stop"; condition = "this animationPhase ""BeaconsStart"" 0.5 AND Alive(this) AND driver this == player"; statement = "this animate [""BeaconsStart"",0];"; }; }; Basic config hints Diagnostics Drive around as much as possible, preferably using real islands. Use Stratis airstrip for acceleration, gear change and sinking of vehicle purposes Path from Jay Cowe to Airstation Mike-26 on Stratis is great to test uphill performance of the car and AI driving skills Whole Chernarus is excellent playground to test vehicles Suspension Easier way to set up suspension is to have center of mass centered according to wheels. Non-centered center of mass is more interesting for driving performance, just be sure to make center of mass centered at least in left-to-right axis. Each wheel could have different suspension parameters but try to keep them the same for wheel pairs. You may try to use ARB if the car sways a lot sideways during turns. This causes lesser side sway but doesn t reduce bumping of suspension when accelerating and breaking. Gearbox Real gearbox ratios have extremely good results for higher speeds and are realistic for lower speeds. But it is better to use some lower values for lower gears to improve acceleration Look out for too big steps between gear ratios, this may prove to be problematic with steeptorqueCurve- engine would change gear later than expected and sound would go fubar dampingRateZeroThrottleClutchEngagedanddampingRateZeroThrottleClutchDisengagedcould be the same, this works really well for FWD cars - engine would slow them down way too much and lock the wheels when only directional arrow is pressed Reference This page is discussedon the BI forums

Once schoolgirls realized that sex sells, it didn t take many long to fall into the trap of selling themselves, sparking the mid-decade boom in enjo kosai, a euphemism for prostitution that literally translates as "compensated dating." From there, the Internet provided schoolgirls with online sites and the anonymity they needed to safely continue their lascivious pursuits for cash, making some wonder whether schoolgirl prostitution is a Japanese ailment or part of the culture. Over the coming few days, we ll look at how Spa! has seen the decade of decadence where schoolgirls turned from demure, bobby-soxed innocents to insatiable sex workers contributing by some estimates as much as 65.3 billion yen to Japan s underground economy. 。 Mayuko Horita, now a 28-year-old employee of a major apparel maker, was one of the first schoolgirls to get into the panty selling scene in the early 90s. "At the time, the papers and TV were filled with stories about burusera. It must have been about the summer of 92, when I was in my second year of high school. A classmate asked me if I was interested in selling my panties. I didn t hesitate, nor did I see anything wrong with it. In fact, I was a little bit peeved that I hadn t found out earlier about such an easy way to make money. The shop was set up in an apartment in a Tokyo condominium. It was really sleazy," Horita tells Spa! adding that market rates at the time were about 100,000 for a complete uniform from a top private high school and around 1,000 yen for a pair of dirty undies. "It was really unproductive wearing the same pair of panties around for two or three days, so some of the girls taught me that I should coat several pairs of panties with yogurt and dry them out with a hair dryer so it looked like they were vaginal discharges," Horita says. Social reporter Yoshiki Fujii was well versed in the ejaculation industry of the time. "Burusera shops had actually been around for about 10 years before the media started taking an interest in them in around 1992, thanks to places like Miki in Takadanobaba, which were suddenly attracting schoolgirls. But rather than panties or uniforms, the shops made their big money getting schoolgirls to appear in dirty videos," he tells Spa! Horita says she was approached by a burusera shop owner to appear in a stick flick. "My friend starred in one. It was 50,000 yen if you masturbated, and double that for doing oral. I wasn t hungry enough for cash that I d go that far. I only let my photo be used to sell my dirty knickers," she says. By 1993, the burusera boom was on the way out. Police started arresting burusera store operators and sellers of the videos in which schoolgirls appeared. Over 100 schoolgirls were taken into protective custody. Action couldn t be taken under the Child Welfare Law as it was set up at the time, so offenders were arrested for breaking laws related to the sale of secondhand goods. With the demise of the burusera, date clubs such as Pudding and Julianas Shinjuku which were frequented by yakuza and other seedy types popped up briefly and proved popular with schoolgirls descending further into the netherworld through the sale of their nether regions. But police soon launched a crackdown and the clubs were shuttered. "Thinking back now, it was great fun to be able to use being a schoolgirl as a type of sellable brand name," one-time panty seller Horita tells Spa! "I didn t actually make much money out of selling my panties. I have no regrets, but I do think now that I was such a kid when I was doing that." As the decade moved into its middle years, attitudes began to change. Guys who had once been content to shell out cash to buy schoolgirls panties would start wanting to get into them. (Today s story is the first of three about schoolgirl prostitution in Japan. The Basic Elements - Shape, Value, Color, Edge 基本的な要素 - 形、明暗、色、境界線 https //www.youtube.com/watch?v=TfAZt3O0sLY http //www.proko.com/basic-elements-shape-value-color-edge/ Welcome to Proko, my name is Stan Prokopenko. This episode is a really important one. I’m going to introduce to you guys the basic elements that make up any picture. We see everything around us in 3d. Then we try to draw a 3d world on a 2 dimensional surface. Of course drawing an actual 3d world is impossible on paper, so we have to learn to create the Illusion of depth. Any picture can be broken down into 4 elements to create that illusion of form. It’s like the periodic table of elements for artists. And luckily for us, it’s a much smaller table. So, we can use these elements to show form and depth if we are realists or representational artists, but it’s not limited to just showing form. Any picture, anything you can see can be broken down into these elements. An abstract watercolor painting, a realistic portrait drawing, a photograph of a sunset, anything that you can see can be described with Shape, Edge, Value, and Color. I would even argue that there are only 3 major elements. Shape, edge, and color. Because value is just a subelement of color. But value is so important that artists have separated it as its own thing. Also, when we’re drawing, we’re usually drawing in black and white. And so, in a black and white drawing value is the only visible part of the color. So, we put aside the concept of color, and just say value. When we start painting, we introduce the other two subelements of color - hue and chroma. So, let’s go over these elements one by one, starting with Shape. Shape is a concept that’s familiar to most of us. It’s the elements we use to draw as kids. It’s the area that something takes up. It’s the outline, or the contour of all the pieces in the drawing. But it’s not limited to just the outline of the big elements. The smaller parts also have specific shapes. For the early stages of a drawing you want to develop your ability to simplify a shape. This is important so that you can focus on the composition and the breakdown of the big picture. Getting distracted by the smaller details too early, can hurt you in the long run. Working big to small is usually a good idea. When simplifying, think about geometric shapes. circles, ovals, squares, rectangles, triangles, diamonds, crescents and so on.. These are simple shapes as opposed to complex organic shapes. For example this complex shape of a leaf can be simplified to this in the first stage of the drawing and then the details can be found in the later stages. Shape is the most important element to convey the identity of an object. These two shapes are very different and symbolize two very different things. They are not 3 dimensional, but its still very obvious what they represent, just by looking at the shape. That’s why “shape design” is such an important skill to practice and develop. Simply put, shape design is making your shapes look good. It’s a bit arbitrary, but you know it when you see it. You could say that this shape is better than this one because it’s cleaner and more interesting. It does a better job of getting the point across and doing so in a more interesting way. Now let’s move on to color. I’ll go into more depth on color theory later, since it’s a very complex topic and deserves it’s own episode or even a whole series of episodes. Right now, I’ll just go over the basics. Color has 3 subcategories. The Hue, the chroma, and the value. For example, this color has a purple hue, a number 8 value, and a medium chroma. Hue is what we typically refer to when we say color. Yellow, orange, red, blue, green - these are all hues. Your traditional color wheel is an arrangement of hues.. If you shine a light through a prism, it will break up the light and reveal the color spectrum. The same colors as the rainbow. And the same colors as the color wheel. The terms warm and cool are used to describe the two sides of the color wheel if you cut it in half. The warm family shares orange as a common color and the cool family shares blue as a common color. Think of fire being warm and ice being cool. Chroma refers to how grey or how pure the color is. On one end are the high chroma colors that you ll see in the rainbow, and on the other end are the low chroma greys with a gradual transition. In some color wheels you ll have the high chroma colors on the outside with a gradation towards grey in the center. You ll often hear people using the term "neutralizing" a color. This just means lowering the chroma and bringing it closer to grey. There s two ways you can do that. The first is just adding grey to it. As you d expect this will bring it closer to grey. The other way is to add its complement, or the color across from it on the color wheel. Mixing these two colors will result in the color in between them. Half and half will theoretically make grey. Now, pigment isn t perfect, so you usually won t get that exactly perfect grey. But you ll definitely bring it closer to grey. Depending on the ratio you mix, will result in a color somewhere in between the two. So if I add just a little bit of the green to the red, I ll still have a red, just a lower chroma version. Ok lets move on to value. Value is how light or dark the color is. There is an infinite amount of values, but most artists like to think of a finite scale, zero to ten. It s more manageable that way and it makes it a lot easier to communicate. A teacher might say, make that shape one value darker. And you ll know roughly how much 1 value is. Drawing with charcoal we don’t use color, since everything is grey scale. Or a better way to put that is, we don t use hue and chroma, the only element of color that we see is value. So many artists have separated value as its own element and say its more important than the other elements of color. You can have a very beautiful drawing without using color - just greyscale. you don t need it to show a representation of what you re looking at. You don t need it to show form and depth. So, I think it’s wise to practice drawing without color as a beginner, since that’s one less ball you have to juggle as you’re learning. Once you get the hang of values, then add the colors, and go wild. But, I don’t want to make it seem like color isn t important. It is! Colors are beautiful and quite often its what will catch the eye of someone looking at your artwork. It could set off an emotional response to a piece of art, that a gray scale drawing can t do. But as the artist you must understand, that if you don t get the values right, the rest of the color won t look right. So focus on accuracy of values, and that will allow you to experiment and bend your colors. So that s your color basics 101, maybe not even 101. More like 10half... Edge The final element is Edge. Edge is the transition between two shapes. It doesn t have to be an edge of a volume. The shapes within the volume have edges too. The types of edges range from sharp to extremely soft, with an infinite amount in between. But to simplify it we’ve come up with 4 types of edges. Sharp, firm, soft, and lost. A sharp edge is a very sudden transition between 2 shapes. It’s sharp like a razor blade. There is no transition, its a sudden change. A firm edge is almost hard, but it has a very small gradation to it. !--ここから音声にない-- Think of these as corners that have a bevel or rounded corner. !--ここまで-- On a figure you’ll typically see firm edges on tendons and joints. A soft edge is a very smooth transition between 2 shapes. You’ll see a longer gradation. Soft edges are like clouds or baby butts. A lost edge is one that is so soft, that you can t see it anymore. It’s frequently used in areas where the values of two forms are close together and a really soft edge would merge the two volumes together. Putting it all together Every time you re drawing or painting and you look at your reference, you need to have an intuitive checklist of elements to identify. What’s the shape, color, and edge? And within color, what s the value, hue, and chroma? To make this intuitive you have to train your brain by intentionally thinking about these things while you re analyzing the subject. Eventually you don t have to force it anymore, it becomes part of your observation process. For example as you look at this clementine and you observe the shadow, you ask yourself what is the shape? is it circular, rectangular, triangular etc. In this case, its a crescent if you simplify it and something like this, when you look at the details. What is the value on a scale of 0-10? 0から10の段階に於いて明暗は何でしょう? and more importantly what is the value in relationship to all the other values in the picture? This shadow, is the darkest part of the picture. So if you want your picture to have the full range of values, from 0-10, you have to make it a value 0. The top part of the shadow on the clementine is about 1 value lighter than under the clementine. The reflected light down here is another 1 to 2 values lighter. Instead of the full value range of 0-10, you can choose to go for a narrower value range, say 3-7, The darkest part would be a 3 and the highlight would be a 7. And accommodate the other values to fit within that range. So it’s the relationships between all the values in the picture that really matter. The next question is, what is the hue? Even though it’s an orange clementine, not all the colors on it are orange. I’m seeing a transition from orange on the light side, to a redder hue on the shadow side. What is the chroma? Ehh, it’s somewhere in the middle, probably a little closer to the high chroma side.. And the edge is firm on the left and softer on the right. The ability to see and properly identify all these elements is a skill, its a sense that you need to develop. At first you will struggle to see the subtleties , but just as a musician tunes her ears to hear notes and compose the notes into a symphony, you too can develop your ability to see these subtleties and view the world through an artist’s eye. As with most things, it’s about repetition through practice. Before you go, I want to thank everyone who bought my Portrait Drawing DVD.
