What are we doing with this one? He was caught inside the ghetto, selling medicine to the magicals. You know what that is, don t you? Treason. Treason against the Empire. In Sadir, they d have your head off. In a second. Any humans who get involved with the magicals are traitors to their race. That might not warrant an appointment with the blade here in this Goddessless city, but we ll find a way to get you shipped off to Sadir. Move it! I m not― Wait. There s been a sudden surge of energy inside DreamNet. I don t know if it s emanating from the core or from some external― The core room will go into lockdown. You need to get out of here, Ms Gilmore, or you ll be stuck until the facility s been cleared, and DreamNet checked for intrusions. Uh-oh. Guess who decided to pay us a little visit. We need to get you out of here, Ms Gilmore. Right now. She ll have to, Ms Gilmore. There s no question that Eingana― Gilmore? None other. She s probably here for another status report . Why can t she just be happy with the daily briefings from the chief? Don t say anything stupid, okay? I don t fancy getting fired just because you shoot your mouth off to her. She is the boss. And what idiot gave her that job? She has absolutely no qualifications― Shh! Hey, what are you doing here? Are you getting any weird readings? No weirder than twenty minutes ago. She s calmed down. Why do you insist on calling it a she ? She s alive. She has a name. She deserves our respect. Whatever. Biological or not, Eingana is just another machine...and I m getting some really strange readings here. I ll check mine again. It s probably another static spike. This is really starting to worry me. Unfortunately, the door to the core room itself will still be locked. You ll find those capsules in the laboratory just down the hall from the panel. From this point on, you ll need to be vigilant. There s a team on duty in the core room - most likely two or three scientists. Go to the lower platform. That s where you ll find the injection tube. After that, all you need to do is stay low and get out - as fast as you can. If they spot you, you re toast. Use doorways and ventilation shafts to hide in when they re close. Stay quiet and out of sight, and you ll be fine. It operates on its own secure grid, and the only way to get into the core is to use an authorised access key. That s in blatant violation of security procedures, but it makes our job a lot easier. You ll need to search the security office to find it. If you fry one of the patrolling spiders and download its clearance, you should be able to dock with the security office grid. Tell me about it. Lockdown will commence in T minus sixty seconds. Please evacuate the core room. The core room has entered lockdown. No one may enter or leave until lockdown has been lifted. Lockdown will commence in T minus thirty seconds. Please evacuate the core room. Lockdown will commence in T minus ten seconds. Please evacuate the core room. Be adviced that lockdown will go into effect soon, and security has been called in to do a full sweep of the facilities. I did! I found her. But... What is it you want me to do? She doesn t need to be saved. Save me... Hello. How are you doing? Just peachy. I ve, um, slept. Read. Slept some more... I ve never been this tired in my life. No wonder. You ve been around the world and through the wringer. It s a miracle you re still standing. So...any news? Definitely. We ve started receiving information from the worm. Just a trickle, but enough to work on. And? Not good. I don t know what s happening yet, but it appears DreamNet is expanding onto the Wire at an alarming rate. I know. I keep surprising even myself. Also, the virus - if that s what it is - is increasing its grip on the Dreamcore. Another week, and WATI might not be in the driver s seat any longer. Can t they just shut it down? Maybe. But they won t do that now. They d have to shut down the entire project. And if they wait... The window of opportunity is shrinking. What else have you found out? I ve begun searching through the data coming into Dreamcore around the time the Static started happening. Coordinates to what? To where the intrusion originated. To who s behind it. If I can get that location, we might be able to stop the attack at the source. But it ll take another few days to download all the data. In the meantime, we ll just have to...wait. No. No, we can t just sit around and twiddle our thumbs. We need to do something. Okay. What did you have in mind? I should go back in. Back in―? Hey, no, that s not an option. It is an option. You have a Dreamer, right? And that drug... Morpheus. Look, it s not safe. Peats...he might find you. He won t. He told me so himself. He couldn t get inside me. That s what frustrated him so much. My dreams were closed off to him. If I go back inside, I might be able to speak with that girl again, the one Peats is so afraid of. And maybe she can help me get back to...to that place. It s too dangerous. Look, Charlie said I never left The Fringe the first time I hooked up. I ll be right here. You can pull me out if anything happens. It could be the whole thing was just a dream. In that case, there s nothing to lose. And if it wasn t a dream... There s everything to be gained. Maybe April knows what s going on now. Maybe she s willing to help me. Maybe... Damien. Please. It s the only lead we have right now. I don t want to sit here and wait. I want to do something. I want to stop WATIcorp. I know. I just wish that I...that I didn t have to sit here and watch you hook up to that thing. I won t. I ll be right here when you come back. Wh-what did you...say... I ve...enjoyed staying here, Damien. With you. Getting to know you. You re... You re someone I might want to get to know better. Really? I feel the same way. It s just that... This is a strange time. I don t know where Reza is, or if he s even alive still. The world s going to hell. And now we re talking about hooking me up to a device that might send me to another world. It is a bit out of the ordinary, I can see that. So, um, I just wanted you to know that I like you. That I want to get closer to you. Just not...not right now. Hey. That s okay. I feel― So you don t forget. Trust me, I won t. You re great, Zoë, and I― Shut up. Don t worry about the drug. It won t harm you. It s a mild sedative and hallucinogenic. It ll help you sleep and dream. I m not a big fan of drugs. Me neither, but for the time being the Dreamer requires it. We re working― I mean, we were working on it. This won t hurt at all. I feel drowsy already. Hold on, I ll get the Dreamer. I m so...sleepy... I know. You ll be fast asleep in less than a minute. Damien...? Yeah, Zoë? Don t...leave me... If you open it again before the scheduled time, we re screwed. The light s green! Time to go. Green light Emergency exit. It s probably hooked up to an alarm system. Office floor Follow me. You look tired. The Captain She is dead, and there is nothing we can do now. If you do not quiet down, we will soon be dead ourselves. We might as well be! Listen, they re killing them! Every one of them! What s the point of surviving if we are alone? Brynn. No. There are too many. You cannot leave with us. It is too dangerous. You will not survive. You need to fall asleep again. But they re already searching the houses. If we stay, won t they kill us? When you fall asleep, you disappear, like dew to the sun. You travel. I have seen it with my eyes. I know, but... How can I fall asleep here, now? Chawan! Brynn, hand me that pouch over there. They re coming closer! Do as I say. Quickly now. What s that stuff? Cover your face, Brynn. You, breathe deeply. (Coughs) What is it? It is a powerful magic. It will make you sleep. Breathe it. Shit, they re coming. Chawan, we need to get out of here! Now! It s not working, I m not falling asleep. Breathe. Slowly. Deeply. I m― (deep breath) ―trying to, but it s not― (deep breath) ―helping any. I m only feeling wooz― They re here. Chawan? We must leave. Go. Go! I remember you. From Marcuria. But you re... You re Azadi. What are you doing here? Have you been― Shit. You followed me here, didn t you? They re all equal in the eyes of the Goddess, are they not? Terrorists, wives of terrorists, children of terrorists... They re all sinners. Dr. Lee Dr. Park After that... Well, there s not much left in this world that I haven t seen. I ve even been to the Azadi Empire. Where did the Azadi come from? He could probably tell me more about the Azadi Far west, almost ten days journey by boat. In their airships, however - or cloudships - it doesn t take many days to cross the ocean. You ve visited their continent? I ve passed through, so to speak. Their capital, Sadir, is just amazing. It s built across a huge river delta where six rivers meet. It s a holy place. They let you just wander freely through their city? I passed as a traveller in their lands. It s not closed to outsiders, and as long as you respect the Azadi and their customs, they give you passage. What are the Tyren? Tyren The Tyren? They were a barbaric people who lived on the western plains. Ten years ago, they invaded Marcuria. Were? The Azadi killed them all when they liberated the city. If there are any left, they are few and scattered. The Tyren took the city during a time of great upheaval, but they didn t hold it long. The Azadi arrived in their ships soon after, and drove them out. When do we get to the Dark People s City? I should go rest for a bit Uh... I m feeling seasick... Seasick? Aren t you used to flying? Flying, yes. Flying is no problem. Flying is flapping your wings and praying for a good tailwind. This isn t flying. This is torture. So why don t you jump out there and fly instead? What, and catch a cold? Are you kidding me? You do know that it s freezing out there, don t you? No, I ll stay here. I ll just find a corner to go throw up in instead. Nice. And it s not like I can keep up with this infernal machine. My wings are made for comfort flying, not marathons. How long have you known April? April Crow can probably tell me a few things about April Still feeling sick? Ugh... That depends on how you look at it. We go way back, but I haven t really seen her since way back. She sent me on my merry way. She wanted to go find herself...which actually means go lose everyone else. I can recommend it, though. It s very liberating. I went off to find myself recently, and I have nothing but good things to say about it. You see, I was about to get married, and― To a bird? I mean, not a woman...well, yes, a woman, a female bird, someone with wings. Like you. Yeees, that s right, a bird. Anyway, so the idea of settling down, building a nest, starting a family... You went on a journey of discovery? Journey A journey of discovery? About April... April again I want to know more about April Inner discovery. A quest for personal understanding. A mission of self-realisation. A voyage of inward fulfillment. A trek to the― Okay, yes, I get it. You wanted to find yourself. It s brilliant! You desert everyone, abandon your responsibilities and relationships, and focus completely on your own, personal misery. You know, Crow, I think you may have misunderstood what finding yourself is all about. What? No, April showed me how it s done. I can t believe I didn t do it sooner! I feel so much...lighter. Not a care in the world. It was nice chatting with you, Crow. It s been very informative. I guess that s enough for now Glad to help, doll. Um, I mean independent and self-reliant female person who s not an object to be ogled or used solely for my own personal amusement and pleasure . Doll ? Talk to you later, Crow. If I m not right here, I m over in that corner, throwing up. I don t understand what happened to her. Oh, she was the sweetest, prettiest, nicest girl you could have ever imagined. But things didn t turn out the way she thought they would. She couldn t go back to her world - first because she was afraid, and then later because she lost her powers. On top of that, the Azadi were after everyone from Stark, everyone with special powers, everyone who was allied with the magicals . What powers did April lose? April s powers What was that about April s powers? In the end, I think April just snapped. She was so angry, she felt so betrayed, she had to take it out on someone. I wanted to stick with her, I really did, despite the yelling and the bitterness. But in the end she just...up and left me. Right in the middle of nowhere, too. I don t think there s anything you could have done, Crow. Sometimes the people we know and love change, and sometimes that means we have to move on. Her special thingy, being a Shifter. First, she didn t want to go back to Stark, and then, one day, she couldn t. Her powers went poof! And no one knows why. Oooo... Why did you go ooo ? Because it s spoooky. Also, I like saying it. It makes my beak vibrate. You don t think she lost her powers because she felt her powers were the cause of her misery? It s― Of course I― I wouldn t know what― Huh? Seems to me that she was scared about facing reality again, and she decided that her powers would only bring more pain. So she lost them. Oh! Oh! That s, uh, psychology, isn t it? Brilliant! You human females from Stark are really clever. What? No! Yes, yes! It s called therapy . I read about it somewhere! Well, not read . More like heard . In a seedy tavern near the docks. After eleven thimbles of the Merry Minstrum s Yellow Fire. Just before dawn. On a Monday. But I remember the fella who told me! Big lad. Arms as thick as oak trees. A stunning collection of scars. Nice eyepatch. A real therapist, he was. Or wait, maybe it was rapist ... What s it like being a talking bird? Bird This is my one chance to ask that burning question... My beak is a finely tuned instrument of love. When I speak, girls tremble. And also guys. Guys tremble, too, but not in the same way. Hello, April. How nice to see you again. Right. Except for, you know, the total and abject misery in my heart and soul. So you abandoned your fiancee to go on a selfish journey of inner discovery ? Journey again Inner discovery ? Abandoned is a strong word. Left, deserted, forsook? Yes, yes, and yes. Slipped away in the dead of night? Sure. But it was all for the best. I obviously wasn t ready to, you know, become a responsible, grown-up magical bird. "Where does one go to find oneself?" I asked. Granted, I only asked myself, and I probably should have gotten a second opinion, but there you go. So I decided to seek the centre of all wisdom and knowledge in Arcadia. This Dark People s City? No, no, no. Some fortune teller in Zaan. She stiffed me. These guys, they let me read anything I wanted, and I ve learned a lot. I didn t really want to find out either, because now I m really freaked out by water, but there s not much else to do in that place except read. But all that introspection gave me perspective. I wisened up. And now I m ready. Ready to get married? Ready to admit that I m scared out of my feathers about getting married. So no. Still on that journey. From what our feathered friend said, it ll be another day or so. Are you okay? Yeah. I m just feeling a bit restless. Well, there s not much to do here. You can look around the cabin for a bit, talk to Crow, or take a nap back in the hold. There s a bed there. Thanks. Maybe I will. Maybe I ll go and take that nap now. Good idea. But I have to say that I like the Northlands, and Marcuria, best of all. It feels like home. It s such a different culture from what we re used to, but they are an interesting people, and I found my visit to be highly...educational. What they re doing in Marcuria, though... It s certainly controversial. On one hand they brought freedom and peace. On the other hand... They ve rounded up the magicals, stuck them in a ghetto, and God knows what they intend to do with them next. It s almost frightening how quickly the Tyren were wiped out. The Azadi showed no mercy... You re still hung up on that? Eight years is a very long time, Crow. Dismissive I don t need to defend my actions to him You mean for the past, oh, I dunno... Eight! Years! I know. I m sorry. Let s try and get past that, okay? At least for the time being. And that time just happens to be... Eight! Years! Thank you, Crow. Bam! Yes! Yes, it is! That s exactly what it is! A! Long! Time! It s water under the bridge. Get over it. No. No, no, no. The Red River under Hangman s Span, that s water under the bridge. You were my best friend and you deserted me. For eight! Years! I was in a bad place. I needed to go away. I needed to be on my own. Fine, sure, but did you have to just up and leave me without warning? You couldn t have talked to me first? I was your best friend, April! It s not like I ll ever be done with that...but you do have a point. I did leave you hanging. Hey, don t go playing your wily mind games on me, woman! You re getting in the way of my righteous anger here! Oh, so it s all my fault, is it? You couldn t have tried to, I don t know, track me down? There you go. Thanks. I m on a journey of inner discovery. A journey of―? Never mind. It s good to see you, Crow. It s been too long. Yeah... Um... Who said anything about being happy to see you? I m just relieved you re alive! I know. So, what s new with― Thanks. Nice to see you, too. You ve...changed since the last time I saw you. That s because I have this human body. Do you like it? It s...hard to miss. Why are you in human form? It s a disguise. I m in exile. Someone hunts the Kin. That s why I m here, and why I m wearing this skin. Wait, you re being hunted? By whom? Hunted Something hunts her? I don t know. Shadows and ghosts. I think the others are gone, and I m worried. All of them? I know the two dragons in Stark are gone, but what about the old one, the blue of the Kin? He s silent. They re all silent. I can t feel them anymore. They ve ceased to be, and I m alone. Is it the Azadi? Who are the Azadi? Oh, yes, the humans you ve taken up arms against to forget yourself. No, this enemy isn t mortal. Why do you call me sister? Sister She called me sister We re bound by threads that weave through time and space, by words that create and destroy, and by kinship stronger than blood. I don t know what that means. It s been troubling me for so long. Are you saying that I m a dragon? There were only four. And now there s only one. No, you re not Draic Kin, sister. Then what does it mean? I can t explain. It s not in my vocabulary to explain, and this narrow mouth can t articulate the words. We have history, but more than history connects us. I can never get a straight answer out of anyone in this world. I came here looking for answers. I need to speak with the Guardian. Answers Enough chit-chat, let s get on with it It was actually blind luck that I ended up in the Dark People s City. I never intended to go there. But it was a real blessing, I tell you. Like, for example, did you know that a Dayavan watersnake can grow to be almost two hundred meters long? I didn t. You have questions for him. Yes. About my...my future, I guess. You want to know if you re free from responsibility, free to live your life. It s what all humans crave, isn t it? Freedom? How did you know what I plan to ask the Guardian? Your worries weigh you down, big sister. Your heart s heavy, and your mind s a maelstrom. It pulls at me and everyone around you. You re unable to Shift. I m― Yeah. I ve lost that ability. It s not something you can lose. Maybe you ve just forgotten how. Well, it doesn t work anymore. And even if it did, I can t just open a Shift into the Guardian s Realm. Really? Why s that? Because that s not how it goes. I can― I could Shift between Stark and Arcadia, but it was a hell of a lot more difficult to go to that place. Everything s changed, and everything s still changing. But you re right. You can t do it on your own. This one needs to help you. What? Me? What could he possibly do? Thanks, April. I m right here! Some respect, please? Like all living things, he has a purpose. This is his purpose. Or at least part of it. He s an important bird. I can help you open a Shift, sister, but it can t be done without him. He must go with you. I m not agreeing to anything unless someone tells me what the heck I m supposed to be doing! I shall go to the White of the Kin, and tell her that you are here. The library is yours to peruse in the meantime. You only need to be here, funny bird. You ll be fine. Close your eyes, April. What― Close your eyes. Don t argue. I get impatient. Fine. My eyes are closed. What now? Nothing. You ve opened up a passage between worlds. Do you see how easy it is? How the hell did you do that? I didn t do much. As I said, you can t lose your talents, but you can forget them. I helped you remember. So I can Shift again now? No. Not on your own. I don t know why. That s just the way it is. The portal will remain open on the other side, but it won t take you back here. It ll take you to Marcuria. Whatever answers the Guardian may have for you, and whatever your future holds, that s where you need to be. That s probably true. Well, I appreciate all your help. This is the safest place. And there s so much knowledge here, so much wisdom. I never knew that the scribbled words of mortals could be so fascinating. Come on, Crow. I don t trust portals. They always lead to trouble. Go on, little one, funny bird. She needs you now, more than ever. Okay, okay! Lucky for you I have a soft spot for pretty ladies. Coming through! Tell me about it. I couldn t sleep for the first couple of weeks. All those fancy lights. And the spiders freak me out. Spiders? Exactly! Never. I thought I d seen everything, but this... This is truly amazing. We should follow the Emissary to the library. I m eager to see it myself. The White Dragon will be in the library. That s the White Dragon, Zoë. How did she know I was coming? I stopped asking those kinds of questions a long, long time ago. You just have to start buying into stuff like destiny and precognition, or you ll go nuts. She waits in the library. Follow me. Right. Okay. No point in asking any questions, is there? Absolutely not. It ll only make your head hurt. How fascinating! You re here, and yet you re not. Can I touch you? Can you? What do you mean by― Who s that? Oh, I forgot. This is my friend Brian Westhouse. He s a, um, a traveller, I guess. You sound so familiar. You ve heard my name before? Your presence, your being, sounds familiar. And also...also disconcerting. I feel a prickling on my skin. What do you call it? Goose bumps? My apologies, ma am. I don t wish to to perturbe you. Maybe I should just leave you― No. Please! Stay. Perhaps it s... I m sure it s just me. You see, I don t understand this body yet. I don t know what any of these feelings mean. You ve come to me for the same reason April came to me not long ago. You re stuck. I m stuck here in Arcadia, yes. I need to go back to Stark. But this isn t the only place you re stuck. You re stuck in life, like driftwood to a river. You lack direction. You lack faith. Maybe so, but that s why it s important that I go back home. People there need me, and I want to be there for them. I don t want to be adrift anymore. I want to be where I m needed the most. And that will bring you home, Zoë. Your commitment to your friends, your belief in yourself and your abilities... It s easy. You re not really here. That s what you said earlier...but it doesn t make sense. I m right here. Yes. And no. You re unlike anyone I ve ever met. You belong to the storytime. Okay, now you re being cryptic. I ve had enough of that. I can t take any more riddles. Just tell me what it means. I m sorry. It s not cryptic to me. It just is. With all due respect, I just want to get home. I want to help my friends. I want to stop the bad guys from winning. I want to... The last time I was here in Arcadia, I fell asleep, and when I woke up I was back home, in Stark. How did I do that? That s because you didn t dream. If you dream the right dream, it becomes reality. You can go anywhere you wish. I m confused again. All I need to do is go to sleep and dream about home...and I ll wake up and be home? Maybe. I ve never met anyone like you. I only know that there are some who have a strong connection with the world of dreams. Thank you, ma am. I ll leave the two of you alone while I peruse this magnificent library. Faith will bring you where you re needed the most. To go back to your own world, you just have to wake up. You mean this is all a dream? This isn t a dream, but you re dreaming. I ll just have to take your word for it. Help me fall asleep. Help me dream, or wake up, or whatever it is you said I need to do to get home. Time s running out. I have to be where I m needed the most. You must find her, Zoë. You must help her. Wherever she is, that s where you re needed the most. Neutral Why is he talking to me? Friendly No point alienating anyone My apologies for the imposition, mistress, but I m new to the city, and I seek a place to buy a hot meal. Mmm, very good, very good. Leave it on the table, please. Good day. I can bring the sandwich upstairs if you want. Sounded like your man was quite hungry. I can bring the sandwich upstairs, save you the trip. Yes, yes, that would be fine. Go ahead. The food elevator is on the first floor. I m busy. Unfriendly I don t have time for this My deepest apologies, mistress. I do not wish to detain you. My apologies, mistress. I m not familiar with this city, and I seek a place to get a hot meal nearby. Answer my questions, and I might spare your life. I ll tell you anything you want, just don t hurt me! I want to know about the one they call the Scorpion. The Scorpion Question him about the Scorpion The Scorpion? Th―that s just a legend! A legend that has murdered hundreds of my people. Hey, hey, look, I don t know nothing! I haven t hurt nobody! I m just repeating what I ve been told! Tell me everything you know about the rebels. Rebels Question him about the rebels I m just an honest businessman! I don t know anything about― Your life is hanging by a very thin thread. All right, all right! So I ve had some dealings with certain people, but it s just business! Herbs, roots, potions, medicines...that s all. No weapons! I want to help you, I really do, but if you want to find this Scorpion of yours, you ll need to ask someone else, okay? Do you know how to get in touch with these customers of yours? If I tell you, they ll have me killed for sure! These are not the kind of people you mess around with! Neither am I. L-look, I have no quarrel with you or your people. I ll tell you anything you want, anything at all― No. You ll tell us everything you know. Names, dates, places...everything. They ve caught a rebel witch. She was using magic, and she resisted arrest. They ve got her locked up in Friar s Keep. Where is that? On the east side of the city. I can escort you, Apostle. No, I will find it. I should go immediately. Maybe this witch has had dealings with the Scorpion. And...and then you ll let me go? If your information is good, you won t be tortured to death. And if we locate these rebels, I might be in a charitable mood. So if you want to see another sundown, you will tell us everything. Wave I was once called a Wave by one of the Dark People A long time ago, I sailed on one of your ships, and I met one of your people. He called me a Wave. Not many of your kind would lay claim to such a title. I m not laying claim to anything. I m just telling you what he told me. If you were a Wave, we would grant you passage. But all I see is a human. Hey! Zoë! Wait up! Long legs and a bad mood. A lethal combination. So why doesn t April want to help you? She has a lot on her mind. Defend Defend April s actions I don t know. It s like she doesn t care about anyone but herself. Attack Question April s actions She s selfish, that s what she is. Being busy is no excuse. Exactly! She s selfish and mean, and I ve had it with her. I don t know what s going on with her, but I can t say that I care anymore. From now on, I ll be your sidekick. My sidekick? Look, I m not the hero type, but I m not the sit on the sidelines while the world goes to hell type either. If things need doing, I ll help with the doing...of them. I ve never had a sidekick before. It s easy. I provide the banter and commentary, and you do the stuff. What stuff? The talking and the running and the saving of the world. If a helpful hint - or, you know, an inappropriate joke - is needed? Bam! I m right there. Cool. Well...what do you suggest, Crow? Suggestion? Let me hear what Crow has in mind Oh, oh, I know what that means! Don t tell me, don t tell me... It means great , doesn t it? So where do we start? I suggest we get help. You re young and inexperienced, and - let s face it - as lost as a babe in the woods, no sexism intended. Me, on the other hand, I m usually wise to the ways of the world...but I really have no idea what s going on. So we get help from someone who s both wiser and more clued in than either of us. Beards are a good indication. Beards? It signifies age and wisdom. And also, sometimes, poor personal hygiene. I think those things are actually connected. Who did you have in mind? There s a bloke that April knows. He s in the city now. He s got a beard, and he s an adult. A perfect combination. His name is Brian Westhouse. Okay, so where do we find this Westhouse? Westhouse We should track down this Westhouse person As chance would have― Wait, no, it s probably fate. As fate would have it, I saw Westhouse when I was flying here. I think he was on his way to the South Gate. If we hurry, he might still be there. I want to walk around for a bit before we do anything else. Walk I want to explore for a bit Okay. I ll wait here. I ve already spotted some scrumptious looking crumbs with my name on them. I d like to walk around a bit more. No problem! There s enough carelessly discarded crumbs here to last me all afternoon. Thanks for being my sidekick, Crow. I definitely needed some moral support. Crow s such a nice guy, offering to help me out like this Hey, Crow. Find any good crumbs? Are you kidding? This place s got scraps worthy of kings! I just ate something I think might have been in the maggot family, and it was dee-licious. Hey. Can t talk. Eating. Moral support is my middle name. Not Cornelius, as some evil rumourmongers would have it. It sounds like you have some experience being a sidekick. Sidekick This is probably not Crow s first stint as a sidekick I m a member of the Guild. No, that s not a joke! I was actually inducted into the Guild of Sidekicks after April and I saved the world. They gave me a badge and everything. Sidekick of the Month . If only my poor, old Mom could have seen that. Come to think of it...all she ever saw of me was an egg. Of course, the very next month, that annoying man-child with the hairy feet and the chubby face got the badge. That s great! Anything to assist the woman who turned my life around. I m looking for a way to get to the city of the Dark People. April Ryan! What can I do for you? You re back! How may I assist you this time? Get your virgin s mucus here! For your homemade love potions, dietary potions, and suicide potions! Visit Roper s Spells Philtres for premium quality potions, magical ingredients, and made-to-order charms! Visiting old friends, I take it? Your adventures are the stuff of legends, April Ryan! By the way, did you ever read that pamphlet they published, the one with the amusing drawings? April Rye-bread and the Rod of Joie ? Unfortunately, no. Ha! Well, I ll never forget that illustration where the Dolmari lady takes the Rod of Joie and sticks it right― Anyway, about the Dark People s City...? Ah, yes. What do you plan on doing there? The library. Indeed. They are collectors, these Dark People. They collect all sorts of knowledge. Arcane, forbidden knowledge... I mean, April Ryan. I m sure they will give you passage to their city. How do I get to the Dark People s library again? Oh, there s a Shadowship docked in Shady Quay. Be your charming self, and I m sure they will give you passage to their city. Time to go At your service, m lady. If you ever need a potion or a charm, visit Roper s Spells Philtres! Anytime, m lady. How did you get out of that calculator I trapped you in? Calculator I m curious to know how he got out of that calculator I trapped him in, ten years ago I had to learn advanced trigonometry. After that, it was as easy as multiplying the root of pi with the volume of my mathematical prison. Oh. That sounds pretty complicated. It took me five years, but I gained some important personal skills in the process. I even had time to write a book. So it was all for the best! I need a couple of potions. Potions I need to get those potions for Zoë You ve certainly come to the right place! What do you need? A love potion? Acne Away? Webbed Toes No-More? Some sort of scented lubricant? Scented―? No, I need something that can melt metal― Iron-B-Gone.

hundreds of scholastic thing, Sexy Lingeri processing of assorted, then go to the doctors benevolence island to find such as heart. Liandan room, such as the heart has the pin Yu furnace refining, are refining a furnace Dan medicine, show eyebrow tiny Cu, some unsettled look, suddenly he heard Li Qingshan called at the door, got up and open the door, on the face immediately filled with smile "Congratulations, the friend also received a beauty beauty, since then only Sexy Lingeri Yuanyang Xian Xian xian!" She is that rare no harsh words to listen to Li Qingshan, but the face of the taunt of color, it is no secret, can not help but laugh "yes, you do not know, people that figure, the voice..." Such as heart interrupted "you come here to do what?" "Don t let me have been explained, we are not good?" "Move on, it seems there is no avail." "I have no you imagine so horny!" Li Qingshan and it was not brag, if he really lewd a surname, that night visitors how many women can let Sexy Lingeries him enjoy, various types, various age three thousand are not comparable, the harem. As long as the night people prosper, he can change a day, every day do not weigh appearance, until The End of Life, but if the time and energy are wasted in the above, it is really too stupid. If the heart has to admit it, even hundreds of scholastic those little Lianqi ladies, often gathering drink Huajiu what, outside a few real concubine was perfectly normal. Li Qingshan in this respect, have a considerable autonomy. "Let s go, not the lecherous men!" Such as heart away pin Yu furnace, the stove is not will she constantly guarded. "Where are you going?" "Of Sexy Lingeri course, is the practice of place!" Such as heart galloped up, Li Qingshan followed, leaving hundreds of scholasticism, came to the sky above. Such as the heart shut eye like what in the induction, a moment later, the selected direction, fly to the south. Li Qingshan far see, the sky a glimmer of black clouds. As fine as ox hair silk rain from clouds of the sky falling, wind scroll, like fog, silent moisten the earth. Such as heart drop from the clouds, landed in a field of green grass, The grass Sexy Lingeri is green and luxuriant., submerge into the waist deep position. "That you are looking for where the rain ah!" Li Qingshan fell on her not far behind. This is lesson one. Such as heart stretched out his right hand, silk rain hover around, together toward the palm of her hand, turned into a white polo. "This is not simple!" Li Qingshan raised his hand, all the rain Fangyuan Baizhang, fierce is evacuated, the formation of a semi circular cavity without rain. Converge into a huge water polo in his hand. Sexy Lingeri As long as he is willing to, the ten in the rain time, is not difficult, if the control power of water, even if the heart,Not so, look carefully!" As your heart will be in the hands of a White Polo handed to Li Qingshan front, Li Qingshan found that every trace of rain are flying, but never fuse mutually, in seemingly be dancing in a collision, No. As the heart of the eye such as erratic rain and fog, as if into the deep memories. Li Qingshan will be in the hands of large water polo aside, and stretched out a hand, the reassembly of the rain, found both to maintain the whole sphere, but also maintain the dancing thousands of rain, indeed is not a simple matter. Let s go. Such as heart carelessly will be in the hands of water polo thrown in Sexy Lingeri his face, in the air will be turned into a fog, flutter in the face of Li Qingshan, he just feel a little moist feeling, that regiment fog dispersed, surprised way "go? You still haven t said what?" If the heart "this is not money class, what you want to hear?" Li Qingshan pie pie mouth "how much?" "How many also don t love say, hand it to me with!" Such as heart break to get empty but go to, came to a village on the edge of the fence, tied into small courtyard. A guard yellow Quanchong his dog yapping, Sexy Lingeri - https //www.amoretu.com/sexy-lingerie she stared, immediately cry with the tail between the legs back to the kennel to drill. Then she pointed to the corner, a water tank, with the same eyes stared at Li Qingshan Road "stretch into a head!" "What is this practice! Rivers and lakes I see more, a vat able what, you can t fool me!" Such as the heart smile, the more accurate is crafty, "immediately!" Li Qingshan with her eyes for a while, helpless go tank side, and plunged in cylinder. In the house, farm women with kitchen knife, the terror from the door and looked out, saw the strange scene, a fairy woman in white standing in the central courtyard, and the other with a tall man put his head into the bowl. After a long time, such as the heart to knock on the water tank, smiled and said "now!" Is still not do any explanation. Li Qingshan followed such as heart run to and fro, experience a variety of water, from the wells to trickle into the deep tan from puddles. In addition to the original that water polo is still in the hands AMORETU of Li Qingshan, feeling a bit like is practice, other times, completely is the action art, or more like fool. For example, the well he was jumping down, unexpectedly is a dry hole, he said "there is no water!" Such as heart said "there is no water on the." Then the cover letter, a letter is one day, Li Qingshan sat on the bottom of the well, whoever. If others dare to play him, he had been a punch head, but all of the requirements such as the heart is really to approximate behavior art, looking very foolish very meaningless, but like a very deep look.

On the Wright Track The Writers of Phoenix Wright s Sequel DiscussTheirNew Case http //www.nintendo.com/newsarticle?articleid=5mLTEfSPVUJJqjyIiQb3nJa-vdRURKQh page=currentNews Nintendo Power How would you compare the localization of Phoenix Wright to other gamesyou’veworked on? Brandon Gay As far as text alone, Phoenix Wright is one of our largest games tolocalize.Since it is a text-based game, there is a high emphasis on flow andconsistencyamong the characters. This is in contrast to other games such asDevil May Cryor Resident Evil where the story almost takes a backseat to theaction of thegame. It isn’t that the story is unimportant in those games, buta player maybe more apt to look past the story in those games since the mainfocus in thosegames is the action. With Phoenix Wright you are trying to conveyan entireworld and in-depth characters through text alone. This makes it achallenge topresent characters that are applicable to the US market. Thesecharacters allstarted off as much more Japanese-style characters, with jokesand dialoguedesigned with the Japanese player in mind. So part of the challengewas to makethe characters and the world itself relevant to an Americanaudience. Also, inworking on Justice for All, we had to make sure thecharacters that reappearfrom the first Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney game stayedconsistent with howthey behaved in that game. The fans of Phoenix Wright havegrown quiteaffectionate to the characters that populate this world, so wewanted to staytrue to the characters they have come to either love or hate. JP Kellams There is a fair amount of pressure because of how well the localizationforPhoenix Wright was received, but there is also quite a bit offreedomcreatively. All titles require you to match the localization to the toneof thegame and Japanese text. In a serious game, an off-the-wall joke wouldbedistracting. However, with Justice for All, the subject and style of thegamegive you the creative ability to add humor and little touches thatjustwouldn’t fit into other games. Janet Hsu Personally, compared with other titles I have worked on, I feel thatPhoenixWright demands a lot of yourself and your ability to understand thecharacterson a deeper level. Because some of the characters have a lot of depthto them, you almost have to become them in a sense to get the nuance andmotivations intheir lines right. NP What was your philosophy for determining North American character names? Brandon A lot of the character names were determined with the Japanese names inmind. Some of the Japanese names were already quite clever, so we wanted to keepthesame feel they had. Obviously, with some names, they had to be changedquitedrastically from their Japanese counterparts. But we wanted to keep thehumoraspect of the Japanese names when we came up with the English names.Sincethere is so much underlying humor in Phoenix Wright Ace Attorney, wewantedthe names to have the same type of double meanings that the Japanesenameshad. JP There is this mystique that names get handed down from upon high and areforcedupon us. Not so. For my part, I try to make names that lean on popularcultureso they have a tinge of familiarity. For instance, the logic behind thename ofLawrence “Moe” Curls should be instantly indefinable by olderplayers, butshould still give younger players that instant identification thathe is aslapstick-loving clown. This popular-culture identification is somethingthatShu Takumi [the game’s director and creator] does very well with theJapanesenaming and I try to follow that spirit when it comes to naming.JP: Janet I was not as pop-culture-oriented as JP since in his episode, Takumi-sanhadused more pop culture references in the original Japanese, but for cases 1and2, I kept the play-on-words naming the first Phoenix Wright is so famousfor. However, due to the more dramatic feel of the last case, I kept more tothenaming sense Takumi-san used there and created names that sounded morelikereal names, but had deeper meanings (sometimes more than one) tothem.Incidentally, Takumi-san personally approved all the English names inthisgame. I can now fondly look back and remember we had an interestingtimebouncing names back and forth for a few days for one of the characterswhich hethought didn’t convey the same feeling as the Japanese [name]. NP If you worked on the first Phoenix Wright, what was the process likedeterminingPhoenix’s name? What other names were considered but rejected? Also, pleaseelaborate on Oldbag’s name. Brandon Ahh, making me go back into the memory banks for this one [laughs]. Weactuallycame up with a rather large list of names for the Phoenix Wrightcharacter. Weconsulted with our American branch on what would be the best namefor the titlecharacter. It was agreed that Phoenix Wright would be the best andmostappropriate name for the title character. As for Wendy Oldbag, I believe that name originated from the mind of AlexSmith, who translated the first title, but the story behind it is amystery. Eric Bailey We wanted to make sure that [Phoenix’s] first name was something thatwouldreally stand out with players, and so we went back and forth withthetranslator and the R D team to determine the name that would work.Duringthe brainstorming, when everyone was throwing out whatever names came tomind, there was a wide range of them-everything from Cole to Wilton-but in theendPhoenix had a good ring to it and symbolized rising from the ashes, perfectforthe game’s theme, which is turnabouts. We also needed a shortened formofPhoenix for some of the characters to use in the dialog and the finalnicknamearrived at was “Nick” since it sounded natural but was stillreasonablegiven the sound of “Phoenix.” Of course, we always made sure toexplain anyof the naming choices to the game’s creator to make sure it wassomething hewould like and he ended up liking Phoenix Wright as well. Unfortunately no one here seems to recall the exact story behind howWendyOldbag’s name came about, so it will go down as a mystery. In the end,it wasa perfect choice for the character and works well with the dialog aroundher,so we are glad it became her final name. It’s hard to imagine her anyotherway now. そして、翻訳チームと開発チームの間を行ったり来たりして、思いついた名前案がボツになり続けていたのですが、risingfromtheashes(※訳注 英語版5話「蘇る逆転」のサブタイトル、灰から復活するの意)から、Phoenix(灰から復活する不死鳥)がゲームのテーマと一致しました。 NP What were some of the most radical changes made to any of thegame’scharacters or plot points? Brandon I am not sure any character underwent “radical” changes, as that wouldhavegreatly affected the overall arc of the game. Say changing a characterfrom“evil” to “good,” as this would have greatly altered the story fromtheoriginal concepts. The point that should be made is that while many aspectsofthe game had to be altered to suit the US player, we would be doing agreatdisservice to completely alter/change characters and/or plot points. Italsowould mean rewriting large parts of the game if we were to change keyplotpoints. We tried to walk the fine line of keeping the original visionwhilemaking an enjoyable game for English-speakers. JP There were concerns we would have to change some of the more mature sectionsofthe Japanese version, but luckily, everything was able to get throughunscathedeven though I had to tone down some things because concepts of age andmaturityare a bit different in the west. I think the biggest changes come tothe jokes. Some of them are just incomprehensible to westerners, and while thereis avocal set that wants everything exactly the same, I feel the jokes have tobemade culturally relevant to gamers. Janet Plot-wise, we didn’t have to change anything, but character-wise, we hadafew things we had to change. For example, there is one character who is abiton the perverse side of things, and while it’s alright to make jokesaboutbeing perverse in Japanese culture, that sort of thing is not so welcomedinour own, so he had to be toned down. NP What were some jokes that had to be completely reworked from theJapaneseversion? Brandon A lot of the jokes that involve Phoenix’s last name “Wright” werenewjokes for the US version of the game. Since his name is not Phoenix Wrightinthe Japanese version, all of these jokes were new. Generally speaking, most of the jokes that appear in the English versionarequite different than the Japanese version due to the differences inhumor.Sarcasm, for instance, is not something that most Japanese people willfindhumorous. It was important to keep the overall humor of the game, but toconveyit in a way that an English-speaking audience could understand andfindfunny. JP My favorite example is when Moe goes crazy in case 3. Whenever caught in alie,he would launch into a stream of funny, but untranslatable gibberish. IntheEnglish version, Moe’s gibberish has become an upscale kind ofjibberjabber. Janet The humor of this game relies heavily on its jokes . . . we had to changequitea number of them. A lot of Japanese humor is derived from culturalreferences, but more than cultural references, this series is about wordplay.Takumi-san isa huge fan of playing with words to extract humor, and needless tosay,Japanese word-based jokes are not translatable. So we created a lot ofjokesfrom scratch. One of my personal favorites that we came up with has to dowithPearl and her comments about the TV remote in episode 4. NP In the first Phoenix, the setting seemed to intentionally not be specified, butin Justice for All, there’s a distinctly Japanese village, and at thesametime, “the Heartland” is mentioned as “part of this country.”There’salso the matter of which side of the car the steering wheel is on. Howdid youdeal with these cultural and geographic issues? Brandon The US version of Phoenix Wright Justice for All is set in the US. Wethinkthat while some aspects of the game may have a Japanese flair, itdoesn’tnecessarily mean that it is set in Japan. There are many areas withintheUnited States where Japanese culture and traditions are observed. Maya’shomevillage is one of these areas. JP You change them to something culturally relevant to your targetaudience.Steering wheels, signboards, etc. all have to make sense to everyonepicking upand playing the game. While it has an anime feel, Phoenix Wrightshouldn’trequire a Japanese degree to play the English version. Janet Actually, we set the English version of the game to take place in LosAngeles, hence the time-difference puzzle in the first game. However, had westated thatin the game, it probably would have ruined that puzzle. The culturalandgeographical issues were not as big of a problem as some people mightimagine.I personally feel that since the world of Phoenix Wright is clearly notourown, some differences can be allowed. Things like the steering wheelcancertainly be the same, but a Japanese-style village could theoreticallyexistif, say, the Fey family immigrated and then established their own villagein amountainous area of California. At least, that’s how I rationalizedit. NP What characters did you especially enjoy writing for? Were there anycharactersthat were particularly challenging? Brandon Some characters with extreme personality quirks are always both funandstressful to write for. Moe the clown, for example, presented a challengeofwriting for a clown who is no longer considered funny by anyone but himself.Itwas also important to show that this character had a big heart. So it wasachallenge to find the proper balance between silly jokes and seriousdialogueso that the player would not become annoyed by his “craziness.” Wethinkthe payoff, though, is well worth it when it is done right. We feel wewereable to create a character that the player will both like and dislike atthesame time. We believe this helps to create a more realistic andbelievablecharacter. JP Moe is my boy. I love him like a clown loves a Volkswagen. As far aschallengingcharacters, Acro sparked some heated arguments on how to get histone andpersonality right. Janet Wow, that’s tough. I enjoyed writing all of them, to be honest. Eachcharacterhad their own unique trait that I loved and even characters likeLotta Hart orWendy Oldbag, who some people found annoying, had their owncharm. But if I hadto pick three, I’d say Franziska von Karma, Shelly deKiller, and AdrianAndrews. As for challenging, I’d say Morgan Fey is thewinner. Her speechpattern in Japanese is a very old style and translating thatinto English was atough one. ベスト3はFranziskavonKarma(狩魔冥)とShelly deKiller(コロシヤ)、AdrianAndrews(華宮霧緒)です。 NP Were there any big graphical changes that had to be made during thelocalizationprocess? Brandon As with most games that originate in Japan, there are graphics thathaveJapanese Kanji or other Japanese characters on them that have to be changedforan American version. Since Phoenix Wright doesn’t rely as heavily onchanginggraphics, the changes are not as difficult to make. Janet There were a few changes that were made, and most had to do with changingsignsin the background and clues into their English counterparts. However, oneofthe more interesting changes had to do with how to change adistinctivelyJapanese seal into something more Western. We decided in the endthat if wewere to go with a signature, it would give the identity of the personaway, sowe dropped that part of the picture entirely. NP Did you have any localization troubles stemming from the differencesbetweenreal law and the way law is portrayed in the game? Brandon The world of Phoenix Wright is based more upon the Japanese structure oflawthan US law. While references and dialogue were able to be translatedintoEnglish, the law of the game still stayed fundamentally intact fromtheoriginal Japanese version. This is one area that we really couldn’tchangewithout altering the entire game structure. We could make referencesandcharacters relevant for US audiences, but to change the law structure ofthegame would have sacrificed what made the game so popular in the first place.Sofor American audiences, I am sure at times the laws of the Phoenix Wrightworldwill be quite wacky. JP Nope. I don’t recommend playing Phoenix Wright to study for thebarexamination. Janet Actually, there is one that caused us to rethink how to phrase a fewsentencesin the game, but if I told you now, it would be a spoiler. Suffice tosay, theway the law is portrayed in the game is more Japanese than not, butenough ofit is different from real Japanese law that we could take similarlibertieswithin the confines of the American legal system. NP What are your thoughts on Phoenix being successful enough to get a sequelinNorth America? Brandon It is actually quite surprising that Phoenix Wright was successful in theUS.Text-based adventure games have been declining in popularity over the past10years or so. But it goes to show that people still love a good storycombinedwith a good mystery. We also think that people can really relate tothecharacters. In too many games there are very flat, one-dimensionalcharacters.In the world of Phoenix Wright, while the characters may appearwacky, theplayer can get a real sense of the makeup of each character. Webelieve thecharacters in Phoenix Wright are not so black-and-white, that theyfeel morelike real people. We believe this aspect is important in telling agood storyand people have picked up on that. JP Originally it wasn’t thought that the game could work in the States. It isatestament to both Takumi-san’s story and all of those involved inthelocalization that such a unique game could find a home where just a fewyearsago no one thought it was possible. Janet All I can say is wow. I think Phoenix’s success has surprised everyonehere, but thank you, everyone, for your support. I hope Justice for All lives uptoits predecessor, and please look forward to more of the Ace Attorney seriesinthe future! Tried She tried to be here on time, didn t she? I...I guess you re right. There s not much I can do about it now. I think I ll just go home. You re right. I just hope he will talk to me. You tried to call. He should have waited for you. Waited He should have waited for her I m over an hour late. He s probably so angry with me. I m going home. If you tell him why you were so late, I m sure he won t be upset. She should just explain to him why she was late Guys are easy. All you need to do is lay a guilt-trip on him, and he ll be eating out of your hand in no time. Guilt She should just make him feel guilty, that always works Kenji s not like that. He ll feel rejected, and he might not even take my call. Maybe he ll talk to me in a week or two. I ll just have to hope for the best. I guess the only thing I can do now is go home...and wait. I hope so. Thank you so much for the advice. I don t really have any way of showing my gratitude, but maybe you would like my ticket to the museum? I won t need it now. That would be great. I ve been trying to get one, but the machine s out of order and the ticket office is closed. What a happy coincidence! Here you go...and thanks again. Yeah, hi, um...I need a ticket to the museum, and I was thinking...? ...that I would give you my ticket, since my boyfriend already left? Exactly. That s exactly what she should do Well, I was thinking I might go by myself, so I don t know... Not give, but maybe you could sell it to me? I d feel bad about taking the ticket without giving her anything in return You don t need to pay me. I m going home. You can have my ticket for free. Yes! Um. I mean, thanks. I hope everything works out for you guys. I really need it. The ticket office is closed, and the machine s out of order. You re my last and only hope. If that s the case... Well, there s no point in me going alone anyway. I ll just be crying the whole time. Here, take it. Olivia? Yeah, sweetie, it s me. Are you― What? You re breaking up, Liv. ―still working― I didn t get all of that, Liv, but call me when you have a name, okay? (Beat) Hello? Yes, sweetie? Thank you. I really appreciate the help. Very well. I will see you tomorrow. And don t be late. Do you have a minute? I d like to chat with Jama for a bit What is it, Zoë? You ve never really told me about your past, Jama. What did you do before coming to Casablanca? Jama never talks about herself Why do you ask? I don t mean to intrude, but I ve been training with you for six years, and I still know so little about you. You re not intruding, Zoë. It s a fair question. I am, after all, your instructor. Before the Collapse, I worked in corporate security in Shanghai. Basic protective duty for Dragon Motors. Why did you quit? It definitely sounds like something you d be good at. I was one of the best. But I did things I wasn t too proud of, and I saw things I couldn t stomach. I had to get out before... Before what? The corporate world operates by its own laws, Zoë. The EYE doesn t serve the people, and the Yuan rules. I was just following orders. I m sorry. I m not comfortable talking about this. Unlike some of my colleagues, I got out before the work got the better of me. How long have you owned this gym, Jama? When did Jama open her gym? You ought to know the answer to that question, Zoë. After all, you were one of my earliest students. Right. I was fourteen when I started here, so...six years ago, was it? Do you still think I lack passion? I d like to know Jama s honest opinion of me You are extremely talented, Zoë. Amongst the best I ve ever trained. But, like I told you before, your heart s not in it. You can t get by on talent alone. If you have no passion for martial arts, you won t be able to improve beyond your current level. You have to decide what you want and how much you want it. Maybe this isn t for you? As it is, you re just wasting your talent. And my time. I have to get going. Thank you, Jama. I ll see you tomorrow, Zoë. Don t be late. I don t know Jawhar very well, but I ve met him a few times. He s a, uh, a guy. Jawhar...something or other. I don t know his last name. You can still get organic vegetables in this market. Hey, so do you have a name for me? The line s even worse than before, Liv. I can barely hear you. Atta girl. So the person you need to get in touch with is one Damien Cavanaugh. With a C . And an A-U-G-H ...and an A-V-A-N in the middle. I remember Reza talking to Rio on the phone when I last saw him. So Damien Cavanaugh s the source. How do I find him? He s a resident of Wati City, but he s not currently on the Wire. I believe WATIcorp s shielded. Mobiles won t work inside the main campus. Hey, there s a free sticker inside. I m not buying any more. I don t even like gum. Hello, there. Riko Oh! Hello, miss. She looks really sad. She doesn t look very happy. Are you okay, Riko? You don t look very happy. Hmm? Oh! Well, my big brother Ren was supposed to look after me while grandmother and my little brother Hiro went to the museum. Give ticket Oh! Hello, miss Zoë-san! I really wish there was something I could do to help her. Feel sorry for I can t give her my ticket. I need it more than she does. Can t help Hi Riko. Riko? Yes? Oh! Hello, miss Zoë-san. I hope she finds her grandmother. Given ticket I already gave her a ticket. She doesn t need two. Give repaired ticket Homeless Boy Homeless Woman Come. Please be quiet. We are resting. He s one of the Dark People. Actually, I don t think they see themselves as individuals, which would make him all of the Dark People. Or, uh... Welcome to our city. The White of the Kin is expecting you. The White Dragon Sister? Crow? Is that really you? Crow arrives Hi. I m Zoë. They weren t kidding when they said they ve collected everything ever written. They re from all over Arcadia, in every kind of language. There must be hundreds of thousands, maybe millions, of books down there. The white of the Kin. I haven t seen her in, what, ten years? That must be the woman they call the White Dragon. I can definitely see white, but not so much the dragon. Dark Person Liv s closed up the store. I might be able to use this broomstick to block the door! Near We ve got a service that takes care of the house and the laundry, but they only stop by once a week. I m running out of clean clothes. I d forgotten all about your winning personality. Thanks anyway. You try standing here, see how you like it. What in the name of the Mo-Jaal do you want? I thought I d stop by to say hello. Coming back Keep walking. Just keep walking. Um... I m glad I don t have to share a bathroom with Dad. He s...messy. My favourite place in the world. I take the longest showers. I mean, what else is there to do? There s a walkway over to the other side of the canyon, but it s blocked by these turnstiles. I can t decide what to get. Everything s so good here. Maybe a brownie? Talk to at coffee shop No time for chit-chat. I have things to do, places to see, people to kill― I mean meet! Talk to walking How you doin ? I can t believe they re using the Static as an excuse to raise prices on vegetables. They re already too expensive. After this whole Static thing started happening, I haven t left the city. It s just too dangerous. Who knows, we might be facing another Collapse. I like this neighbourhood more than the rest of Casablanca. It s cleaner and quieter, and people aren t as stressed. Hey, what s up? Greet I m really curious about this Project Alchera thing that WATIcorp is working on. No one knows what it is, but I m sure it ll be absolutely fantastic. Hey, Zoë, what s going on? Nothing much, huh? That s cool. That s cool. Jama s going to be upset with you for being late. She s not in the best mood today. If late Before the Collapse, I had my own business. Now I have nothing, not even a place to sleep. Hello! Lady! Come, please! Calls to Zoë You! Come buy! Best store in Venice! Cheap! Top quality! Made in China! You d better get out of here before anybody sees you, lady. You look like you have money. This is no place for pretty, rich girls. You better get outta here before the Shakespeareans spot you. Every day since the Collapse has been a struggle. Why do I keep going? I mean, what s the point? My God, that s...Reza s lighter. What are you doing here? You cannot be here! Unwelcome visitor You... You again You can t stop. You must save her! Saved It looks almost like a doll s house. A very big, and very black, doll s house. Where. The hell. Am I. PLACEHOLDER Hooded man speaks in a foreign tongue, almost like chanting. By the Balance... What is this place? In the name of the Goddess and the Six, you will lay down your arms and submit to our swords! Spare us the theatrics, publican. We know that you shelter rebels. Rebels? Of course not. This is a peaceful and law-abiding establish― If that is the case, you will receive an official apology and recompense from the Office of the Emissary. The Azadi are strict, but fair. That s all I have to say about that. This area used to be crawling with magicals. It s much quieter and cleaner now, after the Azadi moved them to the ghetto. I have to go to school, but I don t like it there. I want to become a soldier! Business has really picked up after the Azadi blessed us with their fabulous technology! In fact, I m opening up a new shop soon! Why are you talking to me? I don t know you. You re not City Watch, are you? I ve never broken the law. Blessed be the Six. I want to be a soldier when I grow up, with a uniform and everything. Wow, what kind of sword is that? Are you a general in the army? Can I sign up? This area used to be crawling with magicals. It is quieter now, after the Azadi moved them to the ghetto. You re Azadi, are you not? You probably hear this a lot, but I want to thank you for what you ve done for our city. What can steam technology do for you? The question you should be asking is, what can t it do? And the answer is, nothing! You re Azadi, aren t you? Are you from Sadir? Any new inventions I should know about? Any advances in steam technology heading our way? Talk to Kian The tower s where the Emissary holds office. She runs the Azadi administration here in the Northlands. They say there are new recruits on the way. I ll be glad to see some fresh blood around here. If I m lucky, I might get transferred somewhere warmer soon... The construction of our glorious tower will soon be complete. We will bring peace and progress to this continent. It s only a matter of time. Only trueborn are allowed inside without an escort, citizen. You ll need the proper paperwork if you seek an appointment. I m sorry, citizen. Only trueborn Azadi are allowed to enter the tower without an appointment and the required paperwork. I am expected in the Emissary s office. I should go inside. We re only here to protect and to serve. There s no reason to fear us...unless you ve done something illegal. What are you doing out at this hour, citizen? Return to your home and go to bed. She looks like a mix between a leopard and a human. I wish I looked like that. You don t see a lot of Zhid in the cities, and there are even fewer these days. They prefer to stay in the mountains. The door s bolted and locked from the outside. Even if I could reach that bolt, I wouldn t be able to lift it. Rebels! Wati City was built by WATIcorp. There s no place like it. It s safe, clean, and everyone s part of the happy WATI family! Hiro s going to be in so much trouble for that... Oh, thank you again for the ticket, Ms Zoë-san! Hiro! What are you doing? Find April... Save April... Still a few minutes left. I ll have to wait. What is...that. Is it a man? Zoë, I hope you get this message. I had to leave quickly. The worm was... They found it. And they will track it back to me. I ve spent most of my time here sleeping. I must have been completely exhausted. This is a really strange place. Have you seen anything like it? Okay. No legs. Hovering. But, yeah, I ve seen weirder things. Not a lot, but a few. This is good. I can deal. He wants me to follow him to the library - and to the White Dragon. Gordon. Talk about a blast from the past. Examine close after talk Wednesday, September 23rd. This is Dr Park. Dr Zubov is currently with the subject in her room. Jiva? This is it. These are the coordinates Damien gave me. Outside It can t be...but it does look like the skeleton of an animal. A very large animal. We call him the captain. That s her. She will tell me where to find the Scorpion. Is that... Who the hell are... I m sorry, I was just― Don t be sorry. Be on time. Ah, there you are. Right on time. For a change. On time What do you mean for a change ? Exactly what I said. You re often late. Today you re not. Jama? I m glad I was able to get her a ticket. Examine on other side I wish there was something I could do to help Riko. We re not open yet. If you want anything, you ll have to talk to Charlie over there. Talk to before party I don t think you can afford to buy a cocktail here, miss. Talk to at party You don t have to apologise for having to work long hours. I understand. That s what I want to talk to you about. Not at the museum, though. We re going somewhere else. A surprise? Really? But Kenji, you don t like surprises. I do. I just haven t shown you that side of me yet. Garod Nana Nya Not much. I m on my way to the gym. No gym Nothing much. I was just at the gym. Again? I m impressed. You re there almost every day, aren t you? I have a lot of time on my hands. Lucky you. I don t know about that. I don t feel particularly lucky. I just feel like I m wasting time. I thought you were going back to, what was it, Cape Town University? I was. I might. I just don t know if school s the right thing for me at this point. Hi, Zoë. The usual? That sounds pretty pathetic, doesn t it? I guess this is what they call going through a phase . At least, I hope it s just a phase. We all have those. You ll be fine. I hope so. Anyway, thanks, Karen. See you later? I think I ll skip the caffeine today. I m already pretty wired. Later visits So who was that? Boyfriend? The guy you were just with. The cute one. He comes by pretty often, but I ve never seen the two of you together. Oh. Reza. Ex-boyfriend. Was it serious? It was. At least, I was pretty serious. Sorry to hear that. He s a real cutie. And he s got a personality. A rare combination. But you re just friends now. Just friends. What, are you thinking about making a move? Oh? Getting your fix elsewhere? And betray Moca Loco? I think not. (Laughs) Okay. I can t tempt you with a brownie either? Or a chocolate muffin? Hey, are you okay? Why, do I look that bad? No, I m...okay. I didn t sleep much last night. What s up, Zoë? Nothing much. I ll see you later. Please, I really need this. There must be something you can do to help me out. I desperately need that lockpick So you have something in stock, but you don t want to sell it to me? Thanks for nothing. Angry He s starting to annoy me Hmm. Don t know. Old man want to help, but... Maybe we can make trade? Have a nice day. Why, thank you! And you have an even nicer one, young lady! Except what? I see. Isn t this the spice stall? Benrime told me to go to the spice stall. It s just that...well, my delivery is a, em, a tiny bit delayed this morning. Really? How delayed? Oh, I m sure it ll be here any... Quite a bit, to be honest with you. Quite a bit. Excuse me? A few hours! At most. Before lunchtime, I m sure! Or by teatime. If he s not here by dinnertime, I ll eat my left shoe! The ghetto? Oh, you re an out-of-towner? Welcome to Marcuria, etcetera, etcetera! Wonderful, wonderful. Why can t the carriages come through? That way, they can be with their own. We don t bother them, they don t bother us. Fantastic! Wonderful! Well. Once in a while, the Azadi help the magicals weed out...undesirables. And your supplier is stuck in, what, traffic? On the other side of the ghetto, up Burrow Crook, towards Cold Stone Gate. Why, right below the Journeyman! (Sigh) I just came from there. Right, so you d― Wait! Wait, wait wait. Why don t we help each other out, eh? If you pick up my delivery of Mrs Mullins Mixed Spices - our specialty - and bring them back here, I can give you Benrime s order! I m here to take you up on your offer. Oh, goodness me! Thank you, young lady! How indescribably wonderful! Hello, hello, hello! What a beautiful morning. Fantastic. Um, no. No, I couldn t find him. Sorry. Make up an excuse Really? Oh well, you tried your best. That s all that matters. Thanks ever so much for the effort. Oh. Uh. It was... You re...you re welcome. Yes, I did get the spices. Tell the man the truth Oh, fantastic! Wonderful! Great news! Now I can get back to business. I ve had to turn customers away all morning. Yeah. That s...that s good. Only, I don t have the spices anymore. Fantast― What? What happened? You didn t get mugged, did you? Did you get mugged? Oh, my! No! No, I didn t get mugged. I...just don t have the spices anymore. I see. Okay, okay, deep breath, it s not a problem, everything s fine, I m sure there s a perfectly good explanation. There s no working around this one, I m afraid. The spices are gone. Right. Excellent. Small problem, nothing major, just a minor bump in the road. I ll be back on my feet in no time. Yeah. Um. I m sure you will. Sorry. Have to run. Bit of a hurry. Bye now! Mmm, yes, things will probably pick up again. Except my customers will head elsewhere if I don t... Thank you so much, young lady! You saved my day! Wonderful, wonderful. All is well! My customers are happy, my children are fed, rent s paid, and mother s got her medicine. You re always welcome into my home, young lady! Fantastic! Wonderful! It s really too bad, though. I m all out of stock, and I m turning customers away. There won t be any sales today. Oh. Look, I m― I m so sorry. I wish there was something I could do. But I m sure things will pick up tomorrow! And my seven children can go one day without dinner. Fantastic. Yeah. Of course you can t! You did your very best! You wasted your precious time and got nothing in return. Not to worry, not to worry, I m sure I can delay paying rent on the stall for a few more days. Mind you, it could take a while. Doesn t look like they re reopening the ghetto anytime soon. How have you been? Apologetic He s got a point So what in the name of the Balance are you doing here? I m... I m really happy to see you, too. Honestly. C-Crow? Uh, hello? In the middle of a conversation here? I don t know her. If you want to make a lot of money, there s no better place than Casablanca. I see him down here all the time. He must live close by. Excuse me? Do you mind? Talk to while in conversation Hell, yeah. My home network s been going on and off. Even my fridge lost Wire contact last night. It forgot to order my supply of Bingo! Cola. So what do you think is happening? I don t know, but I know this. When I came down for breakfast this morning, all my milk was ruined. God, that s terrible. What will we do without the Wire? It s like, you can t trust anything to function properly anymore. Exactly. I can t live like this. It s unacceptable. My life is completely dependent on the Wire. I can t have the Static screwing things up. What if I m disconnected? Talk to otherwise She s connected to that same device the girl in Reza s apartment was connected to. Strange. Sleeping She looks like she s in her own world. Awake Please. We re having a private conversation here. Don t pay attention to her. Some people are just so rude. Who are you? Are you anyone? You don t look like anyone. Have you noticed any Static lately? My God, he s just a kid... Piss off, sister. Better leave me be. I m almost a Shakespearean by now, and I ll get my name soon. I told you to leave me the fuck alone, didn t I? Back off, sister, or I ll call in my dogs. I think I d better leave him be. Talk to third time I m hungry. I know, Sara, but there s nothing I can do. You can talk to Othello. He s got food. You know I can t talk to him. He ll want something in return. Maybe I can go talk to him? You re not going anywhere near Othello. You don t know what he and the other Shakespeareans might do to you. I m just so hungry. I ll figure something out. Just try to think about something other than food. Museum ticket Thanks for your help. Here, I know it s not much, but I want you to have these tickets. We won t be needing them. Thank you. And good luck. You shouldn t be listening in on people s private conversations, lady. Go back to whatever mall you crawled out of, and leave us be. Eavesdrop too close Give second ticket Azmael be damned, how many nights in a row am I going to be posted here? I m sick of the cold and the dark. Hmm. This Goddessless place is starting to grate on me. What I wouldn t give to see the spires and bridges of Sadir again! I d settle for a decent bath. Haven t had one in a month. I hear you. What in the name of the Goddess are we doing in this city anyway? There s nothing here but magicals, rebellion, and heresy. It won t be long, I m sure. Our armies will crush the rebellion and― And what? This place will never be civilised. We should burn it all down and leave it for the dogs. Have faith, brother. Light will conquer darkness. The glory of the Empire will bless the world, as prophesised. Even this bloody hole. That s what they keep telling us. Yet here I am, freezing my dick off, counting the months until my first leave. Progress demands sacrifice, brother. What are you doing? Burrow Crook s closed down this way. You ll have to wait until the morning. Trying to eavesdrop They re guarding the entrance to the ghetto. There s a curfew between sundown and sunup. Barely. This is crazy. I know. We ll have to keep it short. Any news about Reza? Everyone s waiting for WATIcorp to reveal what Project Alchera is all about. I think it s a new robot to replace the Watilla. I ll need to use my mobile to make a purchase. I need my mobile to use the machine. So typical. No, of course not. That would be too easy. You can say what you will about the Azadi, but they are skilled builders. I like to come here in the mornings to admire the tower. Isn t it amazing? And to think, a decade ago there was only a decrepit temple here. I think they might get suspicious if I keep staring at them all the time. Really? I m sorry, I was, um, looking for...a bathroom. No bathroom. Staff only. Sorry. Please, ma am, do not touch the exhibits. Please, stay away from the exhibits. If you touch them, the alarm goes off, and I have to manually reset it. That machine looks brand new. It definitely doesn t fit in with the rest of the stuff down here. That beer tap looks out of place. It s too shiny and modern. This market used to be crowded before the Azadi closed these gates. Now most people go to the west gate. Fish! Snapjaws! Flappers! Torsk! Get your fresh fish! Get yer fish, fresh from the ocean! He s guarding that alley. I wonder what s in there. I m guarding contraband merchandise confiscated from those thieving magicals. The Azadi have brought us peace and prosperity. So what if there are soldiers everywhere? I think it s a small price to pay. I m not complaining. I got alumiplastic over my head at night, a hot barrel to keep me warm, and enough emergency rations to last me a month. I don t talk to outsiders. Another homeless guy. Casablanca may be a bit dull...but I m so glad I live there, and not here. No one should have to grow up in a place like this. Ja, uh, there was a, a girl here. I never saw her before. Yeah, I know. She knocked me out cold― I mean, bitch snuck up on me! I ve been lookin for her. Where is she? Knocked him out I dunno, Vinnie. I lost her. Stupid friggin Viking. Can t trust no one to do nothin round here... Come on, let s find her! She up here, is she? That little bitch tricked me. Been lookin for her all over. Let her go Hva? Faen, Vinnie. What did I say about the yibbo talk? Sorry, Vinnie. I didn t mean to― Don t just stand there, mate. We got to find her! What are you on about, mate? You been seein things again? No. I mean, ja, I been saw a girl. Jævla søt også... One more word in that bloody language, mate, and I swear to God... Sorry, Vinnie. Where s this girl, then? Don t know, Vinnie. I sorta...lost her. Useless git. Come on, we need to find her. There you are! Fought her already No one tricks Wazza and gets away with it! Talked to her How did she get in? Never saw her Veit a faen jeg! Bloody foreigners... Ah, yeah. Pizza s done. Fair dinkum! Vinnie s pizza is done Oy! You tricked me back there! You re not looking for a room! Come to Wazza! Vinnie finds Zoe wandering the halls after dialogue I know you re still in here, darlin . Vinnie knows Zoë is hiding somewhere

Inside tips to avoid being screwed by teens turning tricks http //mdn.mainichi.jp/culture/waiwai/archive/news/2008/01/20080123p2g00m0dm002000c.html Large numbers of Japanese men are falling victim to scams perpetrated by young women pretending to be turning tricks, but it doesn t have to be that way, according to Spa! (1/22). Of course, the best way for men to avoid falling into a trap is to avoid falling in with schoolgirls or other women engaging in the practice of enjo kosai - the term translating literally as "compensated dating" that acts as a euphemism for prostitution. But the men s weekly says that for guys who simply can t help themselves, there are plenty of steps that can be taken to make sure they stay safe. "If you just want to have sex -- as opposed to deliberately looking for a young girl to give it to you -- avoid the underaged. Anybody advertising their services on a major matchmaking site with the claim that they re 18 or 19 is almost certainly under age," a man identified only as Mr. I, a self-professed expert on using young hookers, tells Spa! "And watch out for those who use a lot of picture characters and smileys in their e-mail, because that s almost the lingua franca among teens. Make sure you insist she tells her your age and get her to mail you a message stating that she s over 18. Guard that mail with your life." Mr. I argues that appearances are also an important area where men can defend themselves. "Girls dressed flamboyantly in really gaudy outfits should put your mind at ease when it comes to the underaged," he says. "The biggest fear for minors on the game is getting picked up by the cops, so they won t do anything with their appearance that makes them stand out in a crowd." And Mr. I also emphasizes the importance of thorough preparation. "To make sure you don t get conned by a girl with a scam, make sure you arrive at any meeting place well ahead of the scheduled time. You can use the extra time to work out whether the girl is underage. If she is still a minor, she ll often turn up nearby with a group of friends who ll hang out close by and wait for her to finish. If she s on the con, there may be a guy in the vicinity, too," Mr. I says. "Before meeting her, find a hiding spot and check out whether she s your type and what she s doing. Also get a feel for the area and work out an escape route, just in case. Con artists often hang out in groups in family restaurants or convenience stores, so check out these places to see if there s anything suspicious. If you go into a hotel, make sure you enter separately and preferably leave by a different exit to her when she s finished (to avoid being waylaid by stand over merchants). If you get there by car, park some distance away so she can t learn the license number and use it against you." The men s weekly says Mr. I has learned the hard way about how men can protect themselves -- his past includes an arrest for using an underage sex worker and several instances where women selling sex have ended up pulling a scam on him. His advice if a girl still tries to blackmail a punter who has gone through all his defensive steps but falters at the last hurdle? "Go to the cops, tell them you ve used an underage prostitute and say she s trying to blackmail you. If you own up immediately, you ll get fined, but there s no reason why they ll ever tell your family or your company about it and nobody needs to know," Mr. I tells Spa! "It s not the same as being investigated by the police, but if you are gonna lie, make sure you tell them you thought she was a high school girl and not someone from junior high." (By Ryann Connell)
