I m a friend of Reza Temiz. If this is Damien, he would know Reza Jericho. I don t work here. I m a friend of Reza Temiz. Jericho. Jesus, how did you―? Wait, let me just― Did Jericho send you? I haven t been able to contact him. What did you just do? I made sure that this remains a private conversation. How did you get in here? This place is a bloody fortress. I m getting good at finding my way into impenetrable fortresses. I m Zoë. Damien Cav― Right, you already know who I am. Which I find sort of disturbing. I told Jericho that he couldn t talk to anyone about this. Jericho s gone. Something s happened to him. But he left me enough info to locate you. He s disappeared? Jesus. That s not good. What about Rio? She went to see Jericho. Five days ago. Is she...are you close? We work together. Why, what s happened? I think she s dead. Are you serious? Jesus. I m in way over my head on this one. I shouldn t have asked her to go. What happened to her? I don t know. I found her in Jericho s apartment. She was hooked up to this white plastic thing, and there were wires going into her head. The Dreamer. That s what it s called. A Dreamer. It s not supposed to kill you. I know. They hooked me up to one. Who hooked you up to a Dreamer? Two girls. Twins. I don t know who they work for, but I m guessing they re connected to your company. I ve seen them around. They work for Ms Gilmore, the president. I think maybe they got to Rio as well. And they re after Jericho...after Reza. I was hoping he d made it here. I haven t heard from him since Thursday. Sorry. Rio rang me when she got into Casablanca and told me she d met with Jericho. That must have been right before... I found her in Jericho s apartment, and minutes later the EYE raided the place. I was arrested, but they let me go the next morning. Is there anyone who isn t involved in this? This what? I decided to track Reza down in order to help him. He s my best friend. But I don t know what this is, or what I ve gotten myself involved in. Now Reza s vanished, and you re the only lead I have left. Can you please just tell me what this is? You don t know anything? Only what I ve picked up on the way here. Reza never shares his stories with me. I know that WATIcorp is working on something, and that they ve been testing it out on people in Newport. You called it the Dreamer . I know that the Dreamer is probably connected to the Static somehow, and that s most likely what Reza was investigating in the first place. And I also know that WATIcorp is keen to keep all of this under wraps. Keen enough to kill people. Apart from that... I have no idea who you are, what you ve told Reza, what Rio was doing in his apartment, and what this Dreamer thing is all about. So you re going to have to fill me in, and I m not leaving here until you do. I ve come too far to go back now. If I can t help Reza, at least I want to know why. I want the truth. Right. Wow. Okay. I understand you want the truth. I wish I could tell you... I m putting myself at great risk here, Zoë. I don t know who you are. For all I know, you could be working for the corporation. Then again, if you do, I m already done for anyway, so... You re right about all of it. We...WATIcorp s working on something big. The Dreamer. It s a device that ll let you dream anything you ve got a mind to dream. Lucid dreams. You re awake and in control. Can you just imagine the possibilities? Every other entertainment medium would simply disappear overnight. Why watch a movie when you can dream it? However... About three months ago, something happened. There was a...contamination in the network that connects each Dreamer console with the central processor, Dreamcore. I used to work on the network code, the parts that link the Dreamers with DreamNet. When the problem appeared, my bosses asked me to head up the group charged with identifying the problem on this end, to weed out the bugs. What we discovered was that DreamNet was beginning to slip out of our control. There was a contamination, but it wasn t a bug. It wasn t internal. We figured someone had hacked into the network, and introduced a virus or worm. Something sneaky and adaptable. It didn t take me long to realise there was a link between the Static and our problems. The Static wasn t the cause...it was the effect. Whatever had infiltrated DreamNet was, for lack of a better word, leaking out onto the Wire, causing glitches and system crashes. When I told my supervisors, I was instructed to not ask any questions, and to just keep working on the problem. So I did what they told me. But at the same time I started digging deeper on my own. And that s when I met Rio. She was working with the biological systems that run our code and operates DreamNet - the central processor known as Dreamcore. She d been digging, too, and, like me, she d reached an impasse. So we started working together to identify and nail down the contamination. So we kept digging, and then one day, about a week ago, we discovered something that changed everything... WATI isn t making these things to entertain people. They re making them to spy on and to control people. DreamNet was designed to record people s dreams. And Dreamcore was designed to analyse them. And that s just the beginning. By feeding data back through the Dreamer, they can plant thoughts, instructions...even hypnotic suggestions in people s heads. DreamNet is the biggest brainwashing experiment of all time, disguised as mindless entertainment. What? Oh. Right. Exactly. Someone s trying to take control of the network. The most dangerous weapon of all time... Rio and I, we realised we had to tell someone, but we also knew that the corporation would do anything to protect their secret. If we went to the media, we d be dead. We had to find someone with the guts to expose WATI, while protecting our identities. The Hand That Bites. Who better to expose this conspiracy than Jericho and his notorious feed? We knew he wouldn t be afraid to go up against WATIcorp. This is... And you re sure about this, Damien? It sounds like, like science-fiction. The people behind it seem to believe that it s possible, and the Dreamer works. I ve tried it many times. It s incredible, like nothing you ve ever experienced. But to know they have free access to your innermost thoughts... I won t use it again, that s for sure. Not with everything I know now. I go down to sub-level fifty-eight. In exactly half an hour from now, you ll disengage the alarm, and I ll open the door. Remember that once you re through, the door will be tagged for maintenance by the security systems. I got that. And the rest of it? Thanks, Damien. You too. Good. Keep in mind that I can t call you while we re inside the building, so we won t be in touch until this is over. Best of luck, Zoë. I got it. All of it. I m not sure that s the right word, but I don t know how else to describe it. I could hear the voices of thousands of people around me. It does sound as though the Azadi have plans with this tower, April-an. But I cannot see what that would be. As for this place you discovered deep below us, this...chamber of dreams? This worries me, April-an. Dreams are powerful things. Combined with this Azadi machine, if that is what it is, it could have serious consequences. I tried going back through, but the rock s solid. There s a half mile of mountain between us and the caves. Without the portal, there s no way down there. I will look at the wall in the cellar where you said the portal opened up. Perhaps I can learn how this musical magic works. I must say that I am intrigued. Keep this under wraps, Na ane. Don t let anyone get wind of what you re doing. Not even Benrime. We don t know what we re dealing with yet. Of course. I shall be cautious. Perhaps this is the opportunity we have been praying for. If we do not soon find a weakness in the Azadi front... Then we keep fighting them with the weapons we already have. What else can we do? I am not suggesting we lay down our arms, April-an. But we are fast dwindling in numbers. We re not dead yet, Na ane. And it might be that this new information will help us. Not a day goes by when someone is not killed, captured and sent west to an unknown fate, or abandons the cause. We may soon need an alternative to force. They are many, we are few, and the Azadi support amongst the common people grows daily. If that tower is as important as I suspect it is, we have a new target. I ll talk to some contacts, see what they know, and what they ve heard. Tell Brynn and Chawan to get the remaining supplies on their own. They ll need to leave tomorrow evening as planned. We can t afford any delays. Will you not go with them? I haven t decided yet. It depends on what information I manage to dig up. If I get a lead, I ll have to follow it. So be it. I may wait for you, but I will leave a message with Benrime if I, too, set course for home. He is eager. He is open. He is perfect. 彼は熱心です。率直です。彼なら大丈夫です。 I hope you are right. He is our last hope... そうだと良いのだが。彼は我々の最後の望みだ…。 Have faith. The undreaming will be unleashed, and it will― 信じてください。アンドリーミングは解き放たれるでしょう、そして― Quiet, brother. The walls have ears. 静かに。壁に耳ありだ。 Oops. Sorry! Did you want something? No, it s nothing! Sorry! You all right, girl? Where...where am I? You re still at The Fringe. You don t remember? I don t know. I... How did I get back here? Back? You haven t moved all night. Couple of guests found you passed out. You were drugged. That s what it looks like. I checked the cameras, but there was nothing on them. The crystals were wiped. When we found you last night, I called a friend of mine. A doctor. She came by and checked you out. She said you were on some kind of synth, but that you d sleep it off. So I closed the room and kept an eye on you all night. That s not possible. I was...somewhere else. April, she― I met April. April Ryan! I was in Arcadia, the place she spoke about. I was there! So...so I couldn t possibly have been here. Zoë... Look, I ve been checking in on you every fifteen minutes all night long. You couldn t have gone anywhere without me noticing. You were fed some kind of hallucinogenic. You ve probably been having very vivid dreams. Maybe you re right. But it felt real enough. Dreams Was it all just a dream? That s impossible! I was there! I spoke with April. She was...she wasn t very cooperative. But I did speak with her. Real There s no way it was just a dream! All I know is that you ve been sleeping right here since we found you. Sorry about that. It was a potent drug. My friend couldn t identify it - like I said, some kind of synth - but she said the readings were off the chart. Your mind was on fire. She also said you d be fine, once the drugs had worn off. I would ve called a hospital, but I figured we d both be happier without corporates sniffing around. My clientele is a bit...sensitive about their privacy. And I figured you d feel the same way. I m glad you didn t call anyone. As far as the EYE s concerned, I m still in Casablanca. You left Emma and me at the table to make a call. Twenty minutes later some guests found you passed out in the booth. They gave up their reservation quite willingly. They didn t want to get involved. Sorry? Girl, it s not your fault that someone drugged you. But you might want to consider getting out of this before you get hurt. You don t remember anything? I can t just abandon Reza. No. Last night s a blur. The first thing I remember is waking up in... No, I don t remember anything from The Fringe. Huh. Actually, I m not receiving any signal here. You re, uh, a ghost. Thanks. That sounds perfect. I could definitely use a shower and a change of clothes. I didn t see anyone. But apparently our friend Marcus Crozier checked in just before the incident. Did you see whoever did this to me? And he brought two guests. Wait, I remember...part of it. Marcus, the twins... Hi, this is Reza. I m either busy or I m sleeping. Either way, let me know what s up, and I ll call you right back. Thanks. Come on. Let s move out. Your journey is about to begin. Follow me. あなたの旅は始まろうとしています。こちらへ。 April. I m pleased to see you. Pleased...and surprised. I m just as surprised as you are, Gordon. How, uh, how have you been? I...don t know. This place... I m both a part of it and apart from it. I m no longer who I once was, though I remain who I once was. There is natural dichotomy to the Balance. Positive and negative, reality and dream...being and unbeing. Sounds confusing. I don t envy your role. You re standing in the middle of a very busy intersection. I don t know any other way to be anymore. I...remember. But my memories feel like they belong to someone else. So, April... You have come to me with questions? I didn t know where else to turn. Something s going on with the twin worlds, and I need to know what you know. You re right. Something touches the Balance between the twin worlds. Dreams. Threads that weave through the Divide. But the Balance remains undisturbed. Dreams have always passed between the world of Stark and the world of Arcadia. That is how the worlds stay connected, how magic and science remain inextricably tied to each other. The laws of nature, of the universe, are stronger than the artifice of the Divide. So it s not something dangerous? Not you I don t know, April. There are forces far stronger than the Balance at play here. Dreams make up the fabric of cosmos. Yet my responsibility lies solely with the channeling of energies between Stark and Arcadia, between science and magic. And you don t know anything about these dreams? I know this. Your role in these events has come to an end. You are not the one who will set things right this time. I m...not. Who will? That s not for me to see. Your fate has always been tied to the Balance, April. I see where our paths intersect. I can t see into the Dreaming. The Dreaming? What s that? The Dreaming? The place where everything begins. You, me, this realm, the twin worlds...time, matter, cosmos. Everything. It all begins in the Dreaming. You re being obtuse. You know I hate it when people are being obtuse. I m sorry. I don t know any more than that. But you don t have to carry the burden on your shoulders this time around, April. You re free. Go live your life. Let the past go. That s easy for you to say. There s meaning to your existence. Me? I wasn t who I thought I was. I honestly have no idea who I am anymore. Everyone kept telling me I was important, that I was needed. Then one day, I...wasn t. I was just lost. So don t tell me I m free. Don t tell me to go live my life. You don t know. You have a purpose. We all do, April. You just haven t found yours yet. But this isn t it. Let it go. Okay. Done. I m officially letting this one go. There s nothing more you can tell me? Only what I sense. Dreams are passing from Stark to Arcadia, but not the other way around. A slow trickle that may grow to a torrent. But this does not concern the Balance, and so it does not concern me. I guess that s good news. Thank you. Thank you. Safe journeys, April. I am at the crossroads between waking and dream. 私は夢と現実との岐路に立っている。 One path leads back to the world I left behind. The other path... 一方は私が後にした世界に通じている。もう一方は…。 The other path leads to a place of shadows. もう一方は影の世界へと通じている。 But in truth, it is too late. I cannot turn back. だが、もう遅い。私は何年も前に選択し、そして旅が始まった。後戻りはできない。 I am at a crossroads, but for me there is only one path. 私は岐路にいるが、選択の余地はない。 I leave behind these words in the hope that, someday, they will serve as a map for someone else. いつか、だれかの道しるべとなることを願い、これを書き残す。 To whomever reads this, Godspeed on your journey. I had to carry you to that sleazy hotel down on Jarl Street, and you spent half the night throwing up. Zoë, this is Reza. I, uh, modified Wonkers a bit to make him play a pre-recorded message in case something happened to me. I don t want you to worry. All this means is that I haven t checked in with him for twenty-four hours. I m probably okay. However, in case something s happened, I need you to do me a favour. She will find the notebook for you. Like I said earlier, I m probably okay. Maybe I just forgot to check in. Maybe Wonkers has malfunctioned. But get the notebook, just in case. You re the only person I can trust with this, Zoë. Keep it safe, and I ll see you soon, okay? ―which is why men wear cups. Diane? Well, that s a kick in the groin, Ryan. Thanks! Now, who are you, and what were you doing in my laboratory? The next morning you bought me that antique lighter. Remember? Wonkers, my best mechanical friend. Okay, well, I guess that s a start. Victory Hotel. Return encounter Oh, hello dear. I see. So Benrime sent you to find Magda. Now why would she do a thing like that? And why would she say something like that? Because I m...I m, um, not from around here. That much is quite obvious. Because... Probably because I m not from around here, and I need help. Anyone can see that. You stick out like a black beetle in a flour sack. And that is a very dangerous thing to do. Very well, I will do what I can to assist you. You will certainly need it. I just want to go home again April... I may have heard that name before. What would you with her? I don t know. I need to find her. We have something in common, and I think...I think she s in trouble. And you intend to save her? How do you propose to do that? I don t know that either. I just need to find her. Hmm. Well, I apologise, but I cannot help you there. 201 Twins? They re working together. They were in Reza s apartment back in Casablanca. And they were here last night. So they must ve been the ones who drugged you. Maybe. But I don t understand why they didn t just...kill me. I mean, that s the second time they ve attacked me, and I m still walking. If there s one thing I ve learned it s to not look a gift horse in the mouth. You re alive. Don t ask too many questions. Ow. Maybe you re right. Maybe I should just go home while I m still... You okay, Zoë? Just my head. Yeah, I m okay. You can stay here as long as you need to. And I can call my doctor friend again. No need to go to a hospital. No, I should go home. Thanks, Charlie. I really appreciate it. No problem, girl. Drop by if you re ever in town again. And keep me updated. If you find your friend, or if you...if you hear from April. I will, Charlie. Thanks for everything. Hi, it s me again. I m in― I met Charlie, and I followed your tracks to the hotel. It s too noisy here. I should use one of the VIP rooms upstairs like Charlie suggested. Benrime Salmin, child. I m the innkeeper of the Journeyman Inn. I m Zoë. And thank you. I m sure I will see you again. You re the only person I know in this...this place. Blind Bob Just a quick reminder about how we fight. You have light and heavy attacks. Excellent work, Zoë. Have I taught you nothing, Zoë? You need to focus. Where s your mind at? (Fighting noises) Oof! Aah! Ugh! I know this already. It is worth repeating. Light attacks are fast, but can be blocked. Heavy attacks are slow, but they are also unblockable. If you re quick, however, you can dodge a heavy attack. And that will give you the upper hand, since an opponent needs time to recover. Don t get too cocky now. Remember, keep your guard up, block my punches, and attack only when my defenses are down. Got it? Got it. Let s go. Those are Mani wheels, imprinted with the mantra Om Mani Padme Hum . It s a blessing. Liv s been my best friend for years. Dad. "This is an automatic reminder sent by..." Shit. The gym. I have to hurry. I think Dad misses wearing a lab coat. Dad and I have a great system for keeping the kitchen clean. We don t use it. The kitchen hasn t seen much use lately. I m not cooking anything. Not as long as there s take-away. When was the last time anyone pruned anything back there? We so need a new gardening bot. There s the party tonight. There s nothing before that? Hey, Wonkers, I...need you to switch yourself off for me. Switch off Because... Because I just need you to go to sleep for a bit. All right, Zoë. Promise to wake me up later? Sorry. I ll put you back together once this is all over. I just need to twist the neck like... ...that. Ouch. That s it. The processing crystal. I promise. Nighty-night. Home sweet home. I never thought I d be moving back here. It s a weekday, and no one s working, not even a maintenance bot. What s happened to this city? Liv s having her lunch. It s an ancient postbox. Jardin des Roses. Carlita.

It reminds me of something, but I just can t put my finger on it. I feel an uncontrollable urge to raise my hands, though. The shadow s being cast by those garbage bags. Pretty convincing, if I have to say so myself. It s the theater s fire exit. It s a fire alarm and smoke detector. It s a closed garbage bin. It s filled with a bunch of dry rags, newspapers, and a half-empty oil can. Can anybody say "extreme fire hazard"? It s filled with a bunch of dry rags, newspapers, and a half-empty oil can. When s the last time somebody picked up the garbage? Smells like mouldy caramel popcorn and Bingo! Cherry Cola. Disgusting. It s a mountain of garbage. For such a small guy, he sure makes a big racket. It s constable Guybrush. I shouldn t leave him here. I wound the monkey up real good, so he ll be dancing for a while. It s a perfect fit. I m so clever, I could just die. It s Cortez. They must be really paranoid about fires in this place. I think I got the little guy right where I want him. All right, somebody s coming! This would probably work a lot better if I opened the can first. There s no doorknob. It s impossible to open it from this side. I ain t scared of no guy who don t have the guts to show himself, ah-huh. Hell s blazes, we got us a fire! All right there, mister! Just don t you fire that gun now, y hear? I am sorry I chased ya earlier. Now where is that voice comin from? Show yourself! Freddie ll do the monkey for ya, right now, if that s what you want, ah-huh. He ll do the monkey until you asks him to stop, I reckon, ah-huh. Ah-huh! Huh! This is probably as good a place as any. At least there s no one around to see. Except rats. What for? What are you doing? Stand back, serita. To see what? Why, Alice, I m sending you through the looking-glass! What...what is that? Please tell me it s a hologram. It s a mirror, to reflect your dreams. But I don t see anything. Just...light. Oh, you have to step through. Step through that? Oh no. I don t think so. This is the moment of decision, April. All time, past and present, revolves around this moment. The destiny of worlds is in your hands. But you must make the choice on your own. La vida es corta...you must decide how to live it best. I m not doing it. Very well. Go. I ll wait here for a while, and perhaps you will change your mind and come back before it is too late? All right, I ll do it. I m not sure what I should do. I understand. It s a difficult decision, because whatever you do, your life will change forever. So take your time, think about it. Don t rush into a decision you re not ready to make. Vamos. Enter the light. Don t say that. It sounds too ominous. Just...tell me what s going to happen. You re about to take the first step on the longest journey of your life. I must be insane to do this. Yes, it s pretty much a given. But don t worry. I ll be waiting, right here. No way. I m a patient man, and so I ll wait a while, but don t test me. I m not sure. You have to make a decision sooner or later. And sooner would be very much preferred. Are you ready to step through the looking-glass? Oh, I almost forgot. When you re ready to come back, pay a visit to a friend of mine called Westhouse. Brian Westhouse. Vaya con dios, child. And may the Balance protect you. Cortez? Oh God, it s real! It s all true. I saw it. I saw the other world. Arcadia. Either I m going crazy, or you were right about everything. Let s hope for the latter, eh, mi Amiga? So I gather your trip was a success? Success? My whole world has been turned topsy-turvy, so I don t think success is the right word... Nothing about it makes sense. The fact is, I don t believe in magic. The sun doesn t need you to believe in it to rise in the morning, serita. You have seen the truth with your own two eyes. I can do nothing more to convince you. It is up to you, now. Well, do I have a choice? I have to believe at least some of it. My life wouldn t make much sense otherwise. You are a true skeptic, April. Esta bien...we need your kind to balance the hopeless romantics like myself. What happens now? The Minstrum told you about the Balance? About Stark, and Arcadia? A man named Tobias...he was called the Vestrum, I think. Vestrum Tobias. Ah, so Tobias made Vestrum? Que bien. Good. I knew he would go far when I first met him, years ago. He was just an Istrum, then, a student of the Balance. But he was smart, and resourceful. So you know what is going on with the Balance? Tobias told me that the...Guardian? That the Guardian was missing, and that the Balance was failing. He said this would bring chaos into both worlds. As we re already seeing -- your dreams, your nightmares, they are a part of this. You sense Chaos more keenly than most others, but even they are beginning to notice that things are not as they should be. Like last night. What about last night? What you saw...you were not alone this time, there were others, and they saw the same thing. Not nightmares anymore. Real. The first sign of the damage Chaos can do. The Divide is being breached. It is not yet time for the worlds to be united. A breach could prove catastrophical. Who are you really, Cortez? Excuse me? People knew you, over there in Arcadia. Tobias -- he didn t know you by your real name, but he did know you. And Mr Westhouse, he knew you too, as Chavez. But several hundred years ago. Ah. So my secrets are being revealed, are they? I wouldn t say that, because you re still a mystery to me. More so. Good. You see, serita, mystery is important. To know everything, to know the whole truth, is dull. There is no magic in that. Magic is not knowing, magic is wondering about what and how and where. I d settle for the truth, just to be able to know you. Because, honestly -- and I don t mean this in a bad way -- you scare me, Cortez. I m afraid of you. And you re not the only one, mi Amiga. I m sorry, but whatever it is about me that mystifies you, it will have to stay a secret. There are...there are things even you should not know. Gee, thanks. That really helped. Perdoname. Perhaps later, when we are certain of what the future holds? Si, I think I can promise you that, serita Ryan. Later. But for now, we must speak of more important matters. You helped me back, didn t you? To Shift? Si. The power is yours, yes? But for now, you need me to focus your powers, to call forth the dreams. Dreams? Yes. To travel from one world to the next, you must pass through the world of dreams. It s the only way. You are capable of opening a Shift on your own, but you might not be able to. What do you mean? The power -- the magic -- is within you. And when you sleep, sometimes you open the portal without even being aware of it. But when you re awake, it s more difficult. With practice, you will do it. I don t think I want to do it. You must. The worlds depend on it. We must work together, April. I can t do it alone, and neither can you. So what do I do? But what exactly is it that we have to do? Four things. We must find the lost Guardian. We must locate the gateway to his realm, and the disc that is the key to his tower. And we must do what we can to curtail, and defeat, the Vanguard. How are we going to find the Guardian? The moment he surrendered his throne and left his realm, he stepped back into our world. This world. Stark. This is where he was born, and so this is where he must return to. But he could be anywhere, right? This city has power, April. Not magic, but the opposite of magic. And it draws people to it like flies to an open fire. All the pieces of the puzzle come together here. You, me, the Vanguard, the Guardian... I can guarantee you that he s here. But where, exactly, I don t know. I think maybe the Vanguard do. I think they may have him. If they have him, how are we going to get him back? And why do they need him? Why do we need him? He left his realm, but he s the last Guardian, and only he can open the doorway back to his realm to let his successor through. The Vanguard knows this, but what they don t know -- yet -- is how to get there. Who d know about the gateway to the Guardian s realm? That, I don t know. That knowledge wouldn t be here, in Stark. You must go to Arcadia, study the books, talk with the Minstrum and others who might know. But not yet. First, we must finish our mission here. How are we supposed to fight this Chaos you keep talking about? You re the key, April. You have the power to Shift, yes, but there s more to you than that. You are a child of the Balance, and you...no, that will have to wait... By just being alive, you counter Chaos. Without you, last night might have turned out much worse. That tiny breach might have been permanent. I didn t do anything. Then imagine the power you wield when you do do something. Trust me on this, Amiga. It s instinctive to you, to fight Chaos. You see it so clearly, and you will know what to do. You re most needed in Arcadia, where Chaos is a part of reality. The tidal wave will hit there first, and unless it s subdued before it hits Stark full force, we ll never stand a chance. So you will have to travel to Arcadia...after we are done here. How do we defeat the Vanguard? The Vanguard are strong here, and growing stronger. Even in Arcadia, they re gaining a foothold, and with the Tyren on a leash... The future looks quite bleak. How do you know so much about what s going on in Arcadia? Voices whisper in my ear, serita. Voices that I trust. You re saying the Vanguard are strong here... How come I haven t heard about them? They don t go by that name here. Did you ever hear of the Church of Voltec? Sure. They re...oh. That s the Vanguard? Si. Then they are big. Very big. But why do they...why assume a different name here? In Arcadia, they flaunt their philosophy. They preach the destruction of the Balance under the pretense of returning humankind to the "glories of the past". Here, they cannot do that. So they have integrated themselves slowly but surely into society under the subterfuge of New Age religion. And they ve built a financial empire to match governments. They have that much money? The Vanguard own multinational companies. They own planets, April. They own armies. All they need is the Balance, and they will own everything. The twin worlds will be at their mercy. So we basically don t stand a chance, do we? Against an enemy like that? If we hold at bay the forces of Chaos, and if we ensure the natural continuation of the Guardian s role within the Balance, then they will have lost. Okay, so that s it? Kick some Vanguard ass, find the Guardian, locate the entrance to his realm and a ten-thousand year old disc and four dragon eye jewels... It s impossible, Cortez. I can t do these things. I m eighteen. I m an artist...no, not even that. I m nobody. You can t place all these responsibilities on my shoulders. I can t carry that much. I will help you, April. Others, too. You re not alone. Well, I feel very alone. And I can t even tell anybody about this. Yeah, hi, how are you, I m the chosen one, care to help me save the world from evil and chaos? There is no "chosen one", April. There are only those who would, and those who wouldn t. You have a choice between the two. You said I had powers, that I wasn t like everybody else. True, but you still have a choice. Prophecies can never unravel the will of a single human. You are one of many possible paths. But, unfortunately, most of the alternative paths have been blocked by... The world does depend on you. But you have not been "chosen". You choose for yourself what you are and what you will be. Where is the key to the Guardian s realm? In Arcadia. The key contains two parts. One is the disc itself, the other is the four jewels -- the Eyes of the Dragons -- that gives the disc the properties of the Balance, and makes it complete. Where is the disc? The disc was left in the care of the Sentinel, ten thousand years ago. In the beginning, it was kept in the open, displayed for all to see. But not anymore, not since thieves tried to make away with it. They will know where it is. Ask Tobias...Vestrum Tobias. Where are the four jewels? Ah, the Eyes of the Dragons... They are kept by the four Dragons themselves, two in Arcadia, and two in Stark. The White Dragon has one, as does the Old One. These you must find yourself. I ll help you with the others. ...and, oh, April -- make sure you do battle with the physical manifestations of Chaos along the way, because, hey, that s your destiny. ...circumstances beyond our control. What happens if I choose "no, no way"? But I can t do it! I m not who you think I am. I m not your savior, I don t have any magic powers, I m just this girl, I m just...me. The choice is yours, April. As always, the choice is yours. For what it s worth...perhaps not. Still, you need to come to the decision on your own. Then the choice will have to be "yes, let s save the world". Where do we start? Here. In Newport. We must find out about the Vanguard. Their headquarters are in this city, but where? Do they have the Guardian under lock and key? What are their weaknesses? Once we ve done that, you must travel to Arcadia -- I cannot go there, and besides, I have things to take care of here. Right. Except...where the hell do I go to find out about the Vanguard? The library? The net? Valuable information is hard to find. Remember the painting I showed you yesterday? Sure. The artist, a boy named Warren -- I told you about him, yes? Warren is involved in a lot of activities that, uhm, aren t exactly legal. He has connections. He can point us in the right direction. All right. Okay. Where do I find him? My friend, Father Raul, at the Hope Street Cathedral...he s had some contact with the boy lately. Ask him. Wait -- did you say Hope Street? Yes. As in the most dangerous neighborhood in Newport? Is it? I don t usually follow the civic affairs of this city. I remember Hope Street when they first built it. A clean neighborhood. That must ve been a very long time ago. Still, I m sure you ll be safe. You re a girl, no? A self-respecting gentleman would never harm a girl. It s the "self-respecting gentleman" part I m concerned about. Still...I can handle myself. Father Raul, was it? At the Hope Street Cathedral? Yes. He will lead you in the right direction, help you find Warren Hughes. When you re done tomorrow, we will meet up at the cathedral, late in the afternoon. I need to speak with Raul as well. Okay. Good. It s a plan, then? Enjoy yourself tonight, April. Who knows what the future may hold? Good night. I m not a fortune teller, nor am I a Venar. What will happen? Something else. That s all I can tell you. Something else. But I m sure it won t be anything good, not unless you agree to help. It s not much of a choice, is it?

You ll also need to scan yourself. The scanners - with my remote assistance - will upload both yours and the worm s DNA into the Dreamcore s guardware. The security officer on shift won t be in his office - I ll make sure of that - but Rio told me they always keep a spare key around. Your pure white fur is so lovely and superb! In this night with such a beautiful moon, would you like to play together with me? A cat can only live once, so it s all about having fun. Shall I tear that collar around your neck to pieces with my teeth? Being a stray is the best! Meow meow meow♪ I steal fish to eat, chase after pigeons, and look down on the working humans from the roof, where I doze off into a light nap. You should be free, too. Meow meow meow♪ I ll also introduce some great buddies to you. Come now, open up that window, and leap right out! What a willful Mr. Stray we have here! Only your eyes are sparkling in the darkness. You sure know how to talk with that mouth, but I am not a dumb lady. A cat can only live once, so that s why I am being kept as a pet. Do you even have the faintest idea how much the collar of this brand costs? I am graceful. Meow meow meow♪ I eat delicious meals and sleep on a fluffy bed. Although I slightly dislike water, I still take a shower everyday. Compared to me, meow meow meow♪ from whom can you seek protection? Tomorrow, just maybe, you could be run over by a car! Your assertive sassiness is charming, too. I m beginning to take a liking to you. Oh my, how blunt, but what you re doing will not be able to move my heart. My dream, meow meow meow♪ is to leap out of this town eventually, journey to the distant Northern land, and watch the aurora lights there. If you, meow meow meow♪ could be there with me, it d be wonderful. But I guess it will never happen... My way of living, meow meow meow♪ cannot be changed so easily. Besides, I simply do not have the heart to abandon the girl who keeps me as her pet. I m still talking, meow meow meow♪ are you already leaving? Com on, Wait! Please feel free to visit me again tomorrow. I will be waiting... (oh i still love you, baby...)
