前ページ次ページHitman ZERO the Assassin フーケを魔法学院の生徒、しかも今まで魔法を成功させた事が無い人間が捕らえた、というニュースは直ぐさま学院内だけでなく、大陸全土に広まった。 勲章が授与される、そう決まったのはルイズ達が学院に戻った次の日の事で、フーケという人物を捕らえたその影響の大きさを嫌でも伺い知れる。 勿論、彼女を捕らえたのはルイズではない。彼女の使い魔、47だ。当初、ルイズはまるで自分だけで捕らえた様な言われ方に困惑していた。 キュルケや、タバサ、何より47も勲章を授与すべきではないのかとオスマンに進言する。オスマンは全てを見透かしたかの様に長い髭を指すって笑った。 結果として、キュルケ、タバサ両者ともに勲章とまでは行かないが、相応の功績が認められる事となった。 「ありがと。これで私達も一躍時の人よ」 「……だって、本当に私だけじゃないし、捕まえたのは47だし……」 勲章授与のパーティーが開かれる城へは、特別に城からの馬車で送迎される。 その中で、キュルケはルイズにお礼を言った。今までにない、真摯な表情にルイズは伏し目がちに応えた。 彼女の隣には47がいる。これからパーティーが行われるとあってか、馬車に居合わせた全員は一様にして気分が高潮しているのだが、彼は不機嫌ともご機嫌ともとれない表情のままだ。 「その、ごめん。本当なら、47が勲章をもらうべきなのに」 「気にはしていない。使い魔としての責務が果たせれば、それで十分だ。勲章など、俺には似合わない」 幾ら、フーケを捕らえた主たる人物とは言え、使い魔には勲章は与えられない。 確かに、この世界にとって常識とは言え、今回ばかりは彼女の中で申し訳ない気持ちが生まれる。 ゴーレムを破壊し、フーケが落下してくる時も47は真っ先に彼女のもとに駆け、彼女を受け止めてみせた。 放っておけば重傷、最悪意識が戻らない可能性だってあった。それをいち早く察知した彼は、あくまで捕らえる事を第一に考えて行動した。 二度も危険から守ってくれただけでなく、フーケを捕らえる。その場に居合わせた全員から賞賛の的になり得るというのに、それでも使い魔としての責任を優先する。 使い魔がそうだというのに、自身はどうだろうか。成功だと思った何かの魔法で、フーケの盗みに結果として加担してしまった。 調査団に志願したのもその尻拭いの為。にもかかわらずゴーレムが現れた時、何も出来なかった。 ただ、悔しい。彼女の中で、劣等感が明確となる。その頃には、もう、会場の城が姿を現していた。 ※※※ 「なあ相棒」 「……なんだ」 「ゴーレムと闘っていた時、さ。確かにアンタからガンダールヴの力を感じたんだ。一体、どういうことだろうな」 華やかなパーティーが行われる中、47は人気の無いバルコニーに出て、冷えた空気を味わう。 その最中、背負われたデルフリンガーがずっと疑問に感じていた事をようやく口にした。 確かに、コルベールと話をした時、47はヴィンダールヴの可能性があると言っていた。ところが、ゴーレムと闘った時のあの姿はガンダールヴそのもの。 何故、異なっているのか。これがどうしてもデルフリンガーの中で燻り続ける。 47は暫し考えてから、左手の手袋を外した。そして、月の光にその手を掲げる。 「こいつぁ……」 デルフリンガーは、まるで信じられないと言った様子でため息をついた。 彼の左手に、ルーンが刻まれていた。右手に刻まれたルーンとはまた異なる模様をしている。当然、ルイズと契約を交わした時には無かったものだ。 「これが、ガンダールヴなのかもな」 47は呟く。そして、再び手袋をはめると室内へと目を向けた。 丁度、ルイズが勲章を授与される所だった。普段の彼女とは打って変わった、豪華なドレスに身を包んだ姿に、一瞬目を奪われる。 「似ている」 自然と、そんな言葉が漏れていた。 47が暗殺した、クローンの少女の姿は今でもはっきりと脳裏に焼き付いている。 首に毒材注射をする直前の息づかい。死ぬ間際の筋肉の微弱な硬直。パーティー会場の様子もあってか、普段よりもはっきりと。彼が、暗殺したターゲットの事を意識しているのは少し珍しかった。 普段なら、直ぐにでも思慮の外に行くはずだ。だが、今は何故か違う。 そうさせている主たる原因は、恐らく彼が目にしたオルトマイヤー文章だろう。クローンを作り出す方法を記した文章、クローン技術の粋を集めたとも言えるであろうこの文章が、英語で記されている上に何故この世界に存在するのか。 47自身の例をもとにして考えてみれば、同じ様にこの世界に召喚された人間がいて、その人間が持ち込んだ、というのが妥当であろう。 では、その人間は誰なのか。 そもそも、オルトマイヤー文章はクラス1クローンという極めて完璧に近いクローンを生みだす技術を記したものだ。 例えば、これと、47の遺伝子情報さえあれば、幾らでも47と同じ人間を生み出す事が可能という事になる。そんな危険きわまりないものがそう簡単に外に持ち出される可能性などあるだろうか。 学院の所蔵庫に保管されていたのならば、オスマンやコルベールが何か知っているに違いない。 まずは彼らから話を聞くべきか。最悪、この世界にクローン技術を研究している者がいるかもしれない。 であれば、同じくオルトマイヤー文章の発端となった47が命を狙われるのは無い話とも言い切れないだろう。 彼は、この世界で主にもまだ明かしていない自身の秘密に、久方ぶりに思慮を巡らせていた。 胸元から写真を取り出す。一人の少女の姿が映っている。或は、これでずっと抱いていた違和感を解消出来るかもしれない。 勿論、ルイズはターゲットではないし、今は主だ。暗殺など、思案する余地もない。 これ以上深く考えるのは危険か。47は一度会場に戻り、側にいたウェイターを呼びつけ飲み物を用意するよう頼む。ウェイターは別段47を怪しむ様子も無く、一礼してから立ち去った。 流石に夜風にずっと当たっていたのが悪かった。冷えた体が微かに震える。 近くの柱にもたれて、会場内を一瞥していると、音楽が聞こえて来た。どんな曲目かは分からなかったが、リズムは聞き慣れていた。三拍子の、やや軽快なワルツだ。程なく、其処に居合わせた老若男女が踊り出す。 そういえば、ルイズは何処だろうかと目を細めていると、袖を引っ張られる様な感覚を覚えた。 「踊る相手がいないのよ。使い魔として、付き合いなさい」 それが、ルイズであると47は視線を落とさずとも気づく。 「ワルツなら一応、踊れる」 「そう、それなら良いわ」 彼女からしてみれば、使い魔とともに、このような場で踊るなど恥ずかしい事この上ない事だ。それでも、彼女はパートナーとして47を選んだ。 彼女なりのやりかたでのお礼、47に拒む理由は無かった。幸い、ワルツの基本的な所は知っている。 彼女の手を取りやすいよう、少し、前屈みになる。周囲の視線が集まって来た。今回のパーティーの主役が使い魔と踊っているのだ。当然の事だろう。 だが、47は別段気負うつもりは無い。寧ろ、より目立つ様に踊ってやろうと思った。此処に、魔法使いを目指す一人の少女がいる事を誇示する様に。 彼女もクローンかどうかなど、問題ではないのだ。其処にいるのは、自身の主だけ。 音楽が盛り上がる頃を見計らって、ステージの真ん中にステップで駆けた。ルイズは驚き、顔を赤くする。 「もっと、自信を持つべきだ」 「……え」 「例え、お前と瓜二つの人間が居たとしても、お前はお前だ。そのお前が、魔法を使える様になろうと努力している。結果、俺を召喚して、その俺が、フーケを捕らえた」 ルイズは、唖然としたままワルツを踊る。心なしか、そのステップ一つ一つがはっきりしていた。 「でも、フーケを捕らえたのは……」 「47だ。ルイズの使い魔のな。だから、自信を持つと良い。ゼロのルイズではない、と」 47は、決してルイズに目を合わせないまま話を続ける。 別に、彼女の目を真っすぐ見たまま話をするのが恥ずかしかった訳ではない。 毅然とした態度で踊っていた方が見栄えがするからだ。 音楽が終わる頃には、観客が皆、二人のダンスに見入っていた。キュルケや、タバサもその中にいる。 皆がこのダンスに惜しみない拍手を送ると、ルイズは深々と一礼した。47もそれに倣う。 すると、貴族の男達が次々と彼女にダンスの申し入れをしてきた。たちまち、ルイズの周りに人が集まる。 初めての体験に、感情が高ぶるルイズだったが、既に47が会場から姿を消していた事に気づいてはいなかった。 ※※※ 「……ん」 冷ややかな空気が頬に当たり、そこでフーケは目を覚ました。 ルイズ達の居る外れ。レンガ造りの塔の地下に設けられた牢獄には、他に収容されている人間の姿が無かった。 余程、平和なのだろう。もし、自分の生まれがこの国だったらと、フーケは唇を噛み締めた。多分、もう盗みを働く事は出来ないだろう。 そして、自分の身元がばれるのも時間の問題だ。 「自業自得、か」 ため息をつきながら、寝ていたベッドの上に座り直す。時折、壁にともされた炎が揺らめく。彼女と、炎以外には動く者はまるでない。 ぼんやりと、天井を見上げる。どのくらい眠っていたのだろうか。ゴーレムから落下して、直前に47が抱きとめてくれた辺りで意識を失っていた。 思えば、何故彼は助けたのだろうか。あのまま、素直に激突でもさせてくれた方がある意味では助かったというのに。 「ふう、全く迷惑な事をするわね」 「そうか。すまなかった」 不意に出た独り言に応える者が居たのか。フーケはぎょっとして正面を向く。幾ら明かりがあるとは言え、暗がりで声の主がよく見えない。 声には聞き覚えがあったが、少なくとも警固兵ではなさそうだ。影がゆっくり近づいてくる。次第に、顔立ちがはっきりしてきた。 「貴方は……どうして」 其処に立っていたのは、紛れも無く自分を捕らえた男、47だった。 しかし、眼前に立つ男の姿が中々受け入れられず、フーケは気がつけば自分の瞼をこすっていた。 「どうしたのかしら。今はパーティーの真っ最中でしょう」 「此処から逃がしてやる。その代わり、俺の質問に答えてほしい」 「質問……」 「破滅の書。あれの情報は、何処から手に入れた」 47はそんな彼女に対して、淡々と質問を投げかける。 フーケは、相手が47だと知ると妙に落ち着きを取り戻していた事に幾ばくか驚いたが、ベッドから立ち上がり、鉄格子に近づく。 「ガリア王国に私が盗みをしていた時に聞いたのよ。それを手にした者は、破滅を自在に操れるって」 「……ガリア王国」 「そう。トリステイン王国のすぐ側にある国。それだけのすごい書物なら、きっと盗み出せばトリステイン王国は大混乱する、とね」 果たして、フーケの言う事は的を射ていた。この世界がクローン技術をそのまま利用出来る程科学技術が発達しているとは思えない。だが、魔法という未知の力であれば代用など難しくはない筈だ。 問題は、英語をハルケギニアで通じる言語に翻訳出来るかどうかだが、これも持ち込んだ者がいると仮定するならそう難しくないだろう。 「それで、他にはあるかしら」 「ああ。お前の腕を見込んで。情報屋として俺の為に動いてほしい。勿論、相応の報酬は出す」 「……え」 フーケは言葉に詰まった。確かに自分の盗賊としての能力は、情報収集の面でも十二分に発揮出来る。だが、何故一介の使い魔がこのような事を依頼するのか。 とは言え、フーケにしてみれば、ここから脱出出来るのは嬉しい限りだ。盗みをしなくとも47がたった今懐からちらつかせている金貨という報酬が手に入るのも良い。 自分でも驚く程に早く、この交渉は成立した。彼が何を考えているかまでは分からなかったが、一度投獄され、失うものは失っている。この際、そんな事はどうでもよくなっていた。 47が細い針金の様な者を錠の鍵穴に差し込み、二三秒程動かすとあっという間に鍵が開いた。肝心の警備兵は交代をする為に宿舎に向かっているのだという。 即ち、警備に穴があく事を示している。まさにその通りで、二人が牢獄から外に出る間、そしてフーケが一目のつかない所に行くまでの間、誰一人としてすれ違う事が無かった。 遠くから聞こえてくる華やかな音楽や声が、まるで夢のようですらある。 「仕事の話の前に、私も聞きたい事があるわ」 その音楽を背景に、フーケは47へずっと疑問に思っていた事を投げかける。 47は振り向く事も無く、何だ、と小さく応えた。 「どうして、私が、ロングビルがフーケだと分かったの」 間髪入れず、フーケは続けた。 そう、まだロングビルと名乗っていた時、彼女は自身がフーケであるという素振りを全く見せていなかった、筈だった。 にも関わらず、47は初めからそれに気づいていたかの様な行動を先に取っていた。これが、フーケに取っては疑問であり、何より盗賊としての恥の他に無い。 47は、やや歩いて、ああ、その事かと前置きをしてから淡々と言葉を発する。 「確信ではなかった。ただ、馬車に乗って移動していた時、お前はゴーレムが所蔵庫の壁を一撃で破壊したと言った。……しかし、あの壁は二回の衝撃でようやく壊れた。 一回目はミスルイズの魔法、二回目にゴーレムの行動で、な。あの場にいたのは、俺と彼女だけの筈。であれば、状況説明する時は、ゴーレムは二度攻撃を加えて壁を破壊した、となる。 しかし、お前はそうは言わなかった。それは、お前があの場に居合わせたから以外には考えられない。大方、ゴーレムを使って壁を破壊しようとしても、出来なかった。 そこへミスルイズの魔法が発生した。チャンスと考えてゴーレムであの壁を粉砕したのだろう」 フーケは、絶句した。何も言えない。正確には、口は動いているのだが、言葉が全く出てこないのだ。 たった一言、それも、不意に器から溢れた雫をすくうような一瞬の出来事で、彼は全てを見抜いていたというのか。 改めて、恐ろしいと知る。フーケは、心臓が激しく鼓動するのを懸命に抑えながら、前を歩く男の背中を見やった。 「それで、私は何をしたら良いのかしら」 「……レコンキスタ、というのを知っているか」 それから、素早く茂みに隠れ、早々に二人は仕事の内容を話し始める。47が言ったレコンキスタという言葉は、フーケも余り知っているものではなかった。 ただ、アルビオン王国にて国家転覆を目論む組織、というぐらいの、実に大雑把なものだ。勿論、実在するかどうかも彼女の知りうる無いようでは判断のしようも無い 47はややあって、側の茂みの中に手を突っ込んだ。そして、その中から一体の若い男の死体を引きずり出す。 黒いローブで全身を覆い、闇夜に乗じて行動するにはうってつけの姿だ。瞼や口は閉じられており、死ぬ間際の恐ろしい表情は影も無い。 ただ、首に出来た、血の滲んだ細い糸の様な傷を見れば、フーケとてどうやってこの男性が息絶えたのかを推測するのは容易だ。 「どうしたのよ、これ」 突然、47がこのような死体を引きずり出した事に嫌悪感を覚えるが、冷静に一息ついて追求する。 「俺が、牢獄に侵入する前に、こいつがうろついていた。どう見てもこの城の者ではない。気になってな。 適当に尋問にかけたらレコンキスタの者だと白状した。何でも、お前をスカウトしに来たらしい」 「……それで、用済みになったから始末したのね。酷い人。ルイズが聞いたら嘆くわよ」 「そうだな。所詮、俺と、ミスルイズとでは住んでいた世界が違いすぎる」 「何よそれ……。全部分かりきっているみたいな言い方ね。とにかく、私はレコンキスタとは何も関係ないわ。彼の方が先に助けに来たのなら話は変わっていたけれど」 フーケが皮肉を言ってみせる。ところが、47はまるで聞こえていないといった様子で死体を茂みの中に戻す。 端から見れば其処に死体があるなどと想像もつかないくらい、奇麗に茂みの中に死体が隠された。余程の事が無い限り、警備兵がこの茂みの中を捜索する事も無いだろう。 「さて、仕事の確認だが、お前にはそのレコンキスタについて調べてほしい。それと、この世界で起きている事で瓜二つといった言葉に関係ある事も、どんなに小さくても良い。情報を集めて来てくれ」 まるで死体を隠す事など議論するまでもないとでも言わんばかりに終わらせると、直ぐさまフーケに二つの仕事を依頼する。 前者は覚悟を決めて取りかからなければならないような内容だったが、後者はどうしても不可解さがあった。 「そうだな、出来れば、クローンという言葉に繋がる情報であればある程良い」 「その、それはそんなに難しくなさそうだけど……」 「かも知れない。だが、俺にとって重要だ」 或は、この世界にとっても。そこまで言いそうになり、47は慌てて噤んだ。現段階ではこれ以上の情報を彼女に渡すのはまずい。 フーケはやはり怪訝そうな表情であったが、お互い危険な道を歩いて来た者同士通じ合う何かを感じたのだろう。 それ以上の詮索をする様子も無く、一度頷いてから闇夜にとけ込んで行く。その素早さは、流石盗賊だと47も賞賛せずにはいられないものだった。 前ページ次ページHitman ZERO
