だが、47は何時にも増して平静であった。そして、ああ、と時折頷くのみ。 「さっきも言った。魔法など、手段の一つでしかない」 やがて、ルイズの言葉に勢いがなくなった時、47は彼女の前で己の手の平を広げてみせた。 ルイズは何事かと後ろずさるが、47はそれすら無視して己の言葉を紡ぎだす。 「例えばの話だ。ある目的を果たす為の手段が五つあるとする。その内の一つが、魔法だ。 そのどちらかで決着という事にしよう」 そして、身を軽く翻しながらそんな言葉を吐く。 彼の後方では一層の黄色い声が響いていたが、47は最早意に介する事も無く、黙って頷くと一歩歩み寄った。途端に、今度は後ろから少年達の声が耳に入ってくる。随分と興奮しているように聞こえる。 それは、もうルイズの言った、貴族としての心のゆとりという者は微塵も感じられない。やはり、彼らもまたこの決闘を、ゼロのルイズの召喚した使い魔が、ギーシュという魔法使いにめった打ちにされる、という光景ばかりを想像しているのだろう。 47が歩み寄り、一瞬間を置いてからギーシュはもう片方の手で杖を掲げて、何かを呟き始めた。すると、47の周囲の土が盛り上がり、彼を取り囲む様に甲冑の様な鎧が姿を現す。 「言い遅れたね。僕の二つ名は青銅。それは僕の召喚したゴーレムだ。まあ、せいぜいワルツでも踊ってくれたまえ」 遠くで、高笑いと共にギーシュの声が聞こえた。 彼が、ゴーレムだと言った青銅の甲冑は、じりじりと47に詰め寄る。 手には、太い西洋剣が握られている。恐らく大きく振りかぶって斬りつけるつもりなのだろう。 そうなれば、幾ら47とは言え大怪我は免れない。 だが、47は、彼らを無視して歩く。 まるで、最初から円陣の中には47と、ギーシュしかいないかの様に。 これに驚いたのは、ギーシュ本人だ。既に剣の間合いに47は入っている。 後は、指示を出せば一斉に彼を斬りつけられる。今回召喚したのは六体。 即ち、六本の剣に睨まれている筈だ。にも関わらず、47はギーシュの方に向かってくる。 47と、ギーシュの目が合った。 刹那、ギーシュは今まで感じた事の無い、重たく、冷たい感覚が自身を支配しているのだと気づく。 だが、ギーシュ本人が、後ずさりしつつあるのだと気づいたのは、それから暫くたってからだった。 ※※※ 周囲で決闘を見守る生徒達は、この奇怪な光景に我が目を疑う。 一見、圧倒しているかに見えたギーシュが、只黙って近づいてくる男に恐れおののき後ずさりしている。 「な、舐めるな!」 その視線に不快感をあらわにしたギーシュは、慌ててゴーレム達に指示を出す。 ここで、ようやく47を取り囲んでいたゴーレム達は、己の手にしていた西洋剣を振り上げ眼前を悠然と進む男に肉薄する。 それでも、47の歩む方向に変化は無かった。 真っすぐ、哀れな少年を視界にとらえたまま、何ら速度を変える事も無く歩く。 ギーシュが恐れを抱く程に。 ギーシュの目に、微かに涙が浮かぶ。 直後、粉塵が舞い上がった。ゴーレムが一斉に剣を47目掛け、一斉に振り下ろしたのだ。 余りの勢いに、完全にその周囲が視認出来なくなる。ギーシュが密かにガッツポーズを取ったのを他所に、周囲の盛り上がりはなお一層のものとなり、歓声すらあがった。 「47!」 ルイズは、悲鳴を上げる。しかし、それは歓声の中に直ぐにかき消される。 少しでも、使い魔に期待をした自分が馬鹿だったと己の浅はかさ呪った。 何が、魔法は手段の一つにしか過ぎない、だ。 自分は、残りの手段を行使する前に魔法によって蹂躙されてしまったではないか。 只、使い魔をいたぶられたからだけではない。 自分でも不思議なくらいの怒りが、彼女の中でこみ上げる。 或は、彼に期待をしていたのかも知れないと想像して、ルイズは首を横に振る。 「大丈夫、まだやられていない」 隣に居たタバサが、誰に言うでも無く呟いた。 ルイズの耳に彼女の言葉が入ったのは、偶然に等しかった。 ルイズは、一瞬視線をタバサの方に移し、直後に沸き上がった、また別の歓声に驚き顔を上げた。 47が、何事も無かったかの様に、そこに立っていた。 多少、服に砂埃がついたようであったが、何処にも破れは見当たらなく、無傷のままで立っていた。 ゴーレム達の西洋剣は、彼の足下近くの土に突き刺さり、盛り上げさせるだけに留まっている。 即ち、ゴーレム達の攻撃は、全てかわされ、何ら攻撃を加えるに至らなかったという事になる。 これに最も度肝を抜かれたのは、ギーシュの他におらず、ガッツポーズから一変して、青ざめた表情を浮かべている。 グラモン家は、軍人の家であり、ギーシュの父は元帥として戦場でそれなりの活躍をおさめていた。 無論、そんな父の息子として生まれたギーシュは、少なからず父に憧れを抱き、兵法を独学で学ぶ事もあった。そして、今回も、その兵法を存分に用いて闘っていた、筈だった。 しかし、一体の敵を、集中して叩くという彼の中での戦術の基本が、彼の中で音を立てて崩れていく。 何故、集中攻撃した筈の男が立っているのか、そして、意に介した様子も無くこちらに向かってやや足早に歩いてくるのか。 ギーシュの中で様々な思案が恐るべき早さで動き、其の早さ故に思考を停止させる。 47は、狼狽を超え、狂気にまみれた少年を今一度哀れむ。 別段、ゴーレム達が西洋剣を振り下ろした時、彼は変わった行動をとった覚えは無かった。 ギーシュの訓練不足なのか、彼らの動きはとにかく一定だったのだ。 47にとって、瞼を閉じても避けられると豪語出来る程に。 何時の間にか周囲の歓声は止んでいた。 誰一人声を上げる者はいない。 時折、ギーシュが何かを呟いているようだったが、それが何かを理解出来る者は居ない。 やがて、後一歩、大きく踏み込めば47の拳が届く距離まで二人の距離は狭まる。 必然的に、二人の目が合った。 ギーシュが、言葉に鳴らない、悲鳴のような音を喉の奥から出した。 同時に、せめてもう一度指示を出そうかと手にしていた杖を高く上げる。 だが、此処まで来て、そんな行動を47は許しはしなかった。 懐から素早くスプーンを抜き出すと、ギーシュの手元目掛けて投げつける。 「あぁ……?!」 スプーンは正確に彼の手元に当たり、その拍子でギーシュの動きが一瞬止まる。 47が駆けたのと、ほぼ同時だった。 ギーシュは杖がまだ手元にある事を確かめると、急ぎ、呪文詠唱を行う。 ※※※ だが、出来ない。 何者かに後ろから羽交い締めにされた上に口を塞がれ、身動きが全く取れなくなってしまった。 首元に、鋭く、冷たい感覚が走る。 首すら動かせない為に、それが何かまで判別出来なかったが、鋭利な刃物である事は間違いなかった。 「良い事を教えてやろう」 そして、後ろから47が囁く。 一瞬、ギーシュの動きが止まった隙を狙い、一気に駆け寄り彼を後ろから拘束した47は、次いでナイフを取り出し、彼の首に突きつけていたのだ。 最も、全身を恐怖に震わせるギーシュに取っては、彼の一連の行動を予想しうるだけの余裕はもうないだろう。 「人間は、自分の血液を三分の一失えば死ぬ」 更に47はこう続けて、ナイフを首に当てたまま引いた。 あくまで、傷をつけないよう軽く引いたのだが、ギーシュは泡を若干吹きながら狼狽し始める。 47は、更に止めと言わんばかりによく濡れたナプキンを取り出し、片手で絞る。 自然と、中に溜まっていた水分が絞り出され、それがギーシュの首を、丁度ナイフを当てた辺りを伝い始めた。 ここで、ようやく47は彼を解放した。 彼の背中を軽く押してやる。それだけで、彼は目の前を転げ回る。 しきりに何かを叫んでいるようだったが、言葉の形をしておらず、周囲の観客は困り果てるだけだった。 しかし、その異常さに気づくのに然程時間はかからなかった。 何故、目の前の色男は、首から血など流していないのにこれほどまで首元を抑え、助けを求めているのか。 ギーシュ本人は、首元にナイフを突きつけられた事、ナプキンを絞って、垂れた水分が自身の首元を伝っている事に気づいていない。 恐怖に飲み込まれてしまい、本当にナイフで首を切られ、血が溢れ出していると思い込んでいたのだ。 だから、ギーシュと周囲の人間とで認識の違いが出るのは当然だった。それが、この異常な光景の一因となっていた。 とは言え、ギーシュにとっては死ぬか生きるかの瀬戸際だった。 首の傷を確認する精神的余裕すら無く、只管に生きる術ばかりを模索する。 瞬時に、治癒を得意とする水の魔法を使えるものがいれば助かる筈だと考える。 運のいい事に、彼はその人間を知っていた。 ついさっきまで、仲良くテーブルを囲んでいた少女、モンモラシーだ。 地を這いずり回りながら、ギーシュは探す。 彼女は、円陣のやや外側に居た。一直線にギーシュは彼女に近づき、助けを請う。 「貴方のせいで、貴族としての品格が傷つきましたわ」 だが、髪を大きなリボンで結わえたその少女は、丁寧な言葉で彼を突き放す。 ギーシュの顔が、尚絶望に歪んだ。 それでも、ギーシュは彼女に助けを求める。許してくれ、と時折謝罪の言葉を交えながら。 「頼むよぅ愛しのモンモラシー……。 僕は今、こんなになって、やっと分かったんだぁ……、僕には、僕には君しか居ないんだ。 頼むよ、助けておくれよ……。もう、他の娘に目移りなんかしないから、さあ」 もう、其処に色男の余裕は無い。 観客の声も、彼に対する侮蔑のものへと変化しつつあった。 そんな中、暫く考え込んでいたモンモラシーは、二度頷いた後に彼の首に手を当てて魔法を唱え始める。柔らかい光が、彼を包む。 その時の彼の表情は、今までになく安堵に包まれていたらしい。 しかし、既に興ざめしていた47は、地を這う少年の事など視線に入れる事すら無く円陣の外へと足を向けた。 結局、この決闘はギーシュの戦闘放棄という形で一応の結末を迎える事となる。 後半の真相など彼が知る由もなく、土のメイジらしく、最後は地を這って闘った色男と言う誤解を受けたまま。 しかし、険悪ムードと成っていたモンモラシーとの仲を回復させるに至った。 前ページ次ページHitman ZERO the Assassin
