皆、何も言う事が出来ずに、押し黙る。只一人、47だけが思慮深そうに視線を落としていた。 「見えてきましたね」 それから、一時間程の後、ロングビルが声を上げるまで、誰一人として言葉を発するものはいなかった。 木々に囲まれ、忘れ去られていたような古い木組みの小屋に全員の視線が移る。その小屋こそ、フーケの潜伏しているという情報のあった場所だった。 タバサ、キュルケ、ルイズ、47の順に馬車から降りる。自然と、馬を操っていたロングビルが最後に降りる事になったのだが、その直前、ロングビルが何かにつまづいたのか、前のめりの姿勢となっってしまった。 反射的に一番側にいた47が彼女を抱きとめる。自ずと、二人の視線が合った。はっとなって、ロングビルは彼を視線から外すが、その頬は確かに高潮している。 「あらあら、ロマンチックな光景じゃない。騎士と姫君みたいな」 「な、なななな何を言ってるのよ!」 端から見ればまさにその通りと言った様子でキュルケがルイズの肩を小突く。 困惑したままキュルケに噛み付くルイズだったが、成る程この瞬間の47とロングビルの姿は中々様になっていた。 だが、47は自身の使い魔だ。それが、事故とは言え秘書と抱き合う。瞬く間に内側から熱いものが込み上げ、気がつけば使い魔を調教する為の鞭を懐から取り出していた。 「アンタはあ!」 続けて、二人が離れた頃を見計らって杖を振り落とす。47は何事かと驚きを隠せないようだったが寸での所で避けきる。 避けられた事で、余計にルイズの行動が荒々しくなる。最早駄々をこねる子供のように杖を振りまくる。その全てを47はやはりぎりぎりのところで避け続けた。 「使い魔のぉ!」 益々無気になるルイズに、やはりその鞭を避け続ける47。残された三人は惚けたままその光景を眺める。一体どうして、調査に来ているのに痴話喧嘩などしているのか。 「癖にぃ!」 それが、三人には溜まらなくシュールに見えてしかたがなかった。だが、これで笑ってしまえば何より無粋というほかなく、込み上げてくるものを押さえつけなければならない。 二人が小屋の中に入ったのを見計らってから、ようやく二人は笑い出す事が出来た。 「何笑っているのかしらね」 当然、小屋の中にもその声が聞こえてくる。ここで、幸いだったのは47とルイズとでは身長差が随分あったという事だ。 ルイズが正面から彼を見上げても、ほんの少し額に傷がある程度にしか見えない。勿論、思った以上の力で鞭を振り下ろした事に対する懺悔の念はあるのだが、強情さが先走ってしまい中々彼を気遣う気にはなれなかった。 何より、今はやるべき事がある。ルイズは気持ちを入れ替え、フーケが持ち去ったという、破滅の書を探し始める。 書、という事は本の形をしているのだろう。ルイズはもう何年も使われていないような古ぼけた本棚を調べた。 だが、本棚に収まっていたのは何れも馴染みのある古本だけ。中には虫食いが酷く読めたものでないのもあったが、到底学院から持ち出されたとは想像出来ないものばかりだった。 室内には、他に机やタンスがあったが、出てくるのは何れも一目でガラクタと分かるようなものばかり。 めぼしいものが何一つ出てこない事に肩をうなだれていると、隅でうずくまる47の姿が目に入った。 「ちょっと、アンタ何をして……」 もし、其処が小屋の外だったならば、キュルケ達と同じ様に彼の頭のミミズ腫れを目にしてルイズは笑い転げていただろう。 もし、ルイズがもう少し心の広い人柄であったら、何事かと彼を気遣っていただろう。 もし、その場にいたのがキュルケだったらこっそり近づき、後ろから抱きついていただろう。タバサだったら、気には留めるが、直ぐに捜索に戻るだろう。 その何れにも該当せず、ルイズは足を止めていた。背中に、冷や汗が出ていた事にも、全く気がついていない様に、その場に立ち尽くしていた。 明確な殺意、ルイズがこの通りに受け取ったかどうかは知りようが無かったが、47がこの瞬間に放っていたのは確かにそれであった。 普段、無表情のままの彼からは想像もつかない程の怒気に、ルイズは金縛りにあったかの如く動けなくなってしまう。目を見開き、もの言わぬ口を何度か開閉させ、彼の背中をただじっと見据える。 その彼は、部屋の隅にあった箱の中に一冊の本があるのに気がついて、腰を下ろした。 その本は、とても固いカバーで閉じられていた。彼は、これを知っていた。彼のいた世界で、ファイル、とそう名称されたものだった。 キュルケが彼に駆け寄り、フーケの罠だと告げた。ロングビルの姿が見えない事を心配していたが、47は彼女にルイズを預けると、背負っていたデルフリンガーを抜く。 「おぉおう?!」 何時もと明らかに異なる雰囲気を放つ47の、最も近くにいた彼もまた、恐怖に何も言えずにいた。 だが、47が彼を抜いた瞬間に、彼に力が流れ込んでくる。懐かしい感覚に、声を上げずにはいられない。 そう言い、47は懐から掌に収まる黒い物体を取り出して、フーケに見せつけた。フーケのみならず、その場にいた全員が彼の手にしたそれが、マジックアイテムかと凝視する。 魔法の力が込められたマジックアイテムならば、確かにフーケとも渡り合えるかもしれない。しかし、そんな様子は全く見られない。 はったりか。舌打ちをしてフーケはゴーレムに踏みつぶせと指示を出す。破滅の書の使い方を、きっと彼は知っている。 ならば、使わざるを得ない状況に追い込めば良い 「動くな」 ところが、47が突然言い放ったこの一言で動けなくなってしまう。 魔法でもない、怪しげな呪いでもない、只の言葉だが、それを前にして何も出来ない。 「少しでも動けば、お前のマントに括りつけた爆弾を爆発させる。黙って降りてこい」 続けて彼が発した言葉に、フーケは目を見開く。爆弾を一体何時仕込んだというのか。恐る恐るマントの下を探る。 確かに、彼女の心当たりの無いものが括りつけられていた。やはり掌に収まるぐらいの小さな円形の黒い物体だ。 爆弾がどういうものなのか、知らないフーケではない。小さいとは言え、密着上体で爆発されればどうなるか。 だが、眼下の男が持つもので、一体どうやって爆発させるというのか。 これこそはったりとは思えなかった。仮に、はったりだとしても分が悪すぎる。 驚くべき事だが、フーケは47に対して明確な恐れを抱いてしまっていた。この男からはどうあがいても逃げられない。魔法を使えない相手でありながら、そう思わせるだけの何かを感じとる。それは、長く盗賊をやっているが故に磨かれた感覚が故なのかもしれない。 分かっていた。学院長室で、調査団に加わった時から。彼を敵に回しては行けない。それでも、フーケは抗った。男に。伝説に。 47の背後の大地が大きく盛り上がる。それは直ちにゴーレムのそれと同じ拳となり、後ろから47を狙う。 ため息をつく。刹那、47は後方からの土塊を薙ぎ払い前に駆けた。妙に軽い自分の体に違和感を覚えながら、デルフリンガーでゴーレムを切り刻む。何処を裂いたら効果的か、瞬時に判断しながら。 ゴーレムの再生が追いつかず、バランスを崩して転倒するまで時間と呼べる程の時間はかからなかった。
