前ページ次ページHitman ZERO the Assassin タバサは、ルイズが平民を召還したと周囲の人間が騒ぐのを遠くから眺めていた。 普段、ゼロのルイズと非難される彼女が、珍しく魔法を成功させたものだと多少は感心する。 だが、それ以上のものではなく、直ぐに人の輪を外れて、己の使い魔シルフィードにもたれて読書にふけ始めた。 「ねえ、タバサ。ちょっとおいでよ」 ふと、明朗な女の声と共に彼女の視界を影が遮った。怪訝そうな面持ちで顔を上げると、正面に燃えるような深紅の髪をした少女が立っていた。 タバサは、それが無二の親友であるキュルケだと知ると、首を二度、横に振ったきり視線を文章に戻す。 だが、キュルケはそんなタバサの様子を不服と思ったのか、強引に腕を引っ張って人の輪の中に連れ込んでしまった。 「……腕、痛い」 「良いから。ルイズったらもう、素敵なおじ様を召喚したのよ」 ささやかな反応を示すが、キュルケはまるで聞く耳を持たない。しかし、嫌悪感を抱きながらも、タバサはそのルイズが召喚したという男を目にして、背筋に冷たいものが走った事を確かに感じた。 長身で、黒ずくめ、そしてスキンヘッド。肌はやや青ざめ、触らずとも体温が低いと推測する事は容易い。 しかし、タバサが驚愕したのは、そんな容易い外見的理由ではない。 純粋に、男を恐ろしいと思ったのだ。一歩近づけば、それだけ命を削るような。それこそ、氷を炎に近づけたら、容易に氷が溶け始める程単純で分かりやすい恐怖といえる。 自身は、故郷のガリア王国で危険な極秘任務についていた。だが、それらのどれにも比べ物にならない感覚に、気がつけば体を強張らせていた。 「ねえ、なかなか素敵なおじ様じゃない」 隣では、キュルケがその男に熱い視線を送っている。タバサが怖気づいている事など露知らずといったところだ。 「……そうだね」 肯定とも、否定ともとれない微妙な面持ちのまま、タバサは頷いた。 先刻、47は自身の置かれている状況というのを、半ば強引に認めたつもりであった。 しかし、改めて周りを一瞥するとその奇妙さに阻害されてしまう。人の丈以上もある青い龍。見慣れたそれよりも一回りもふた周りも大きな赤いトカゲ。 中にはどうみても巨大なモグラにしか見えない者に頬擦りしている者も居る。 つまるところ、使い魔というのは大抵があのような異形の者を指すらしい。とすれば、彼もまた化け物という事に成る。 他に人の形をしたものが居ないところを見ると、間違いなく47という人間は場違いな存在だ。 己の主と主張するルイズという少女が、最初に酷く狼狽していた理由がようやく見えて来た。 しかしながら、そのまま続行したという事は、やりなおしのきかない、およそ重要な事なのだろう。 未だにクローンとの関係性を拭いきれはしないが、此処が何処なのか全く把握できない以上、下手な行動は得策ではないと47は判断する。 幸いな事に、これまでの会話の内容や周囲の様子から、47の所属する組織や、それに敵対する組織との関わりはないようである。 そんな事は、これまでの常識からは到底考えられない事だったが、既に魔法という、常識外の事が起こりえている光景を目の当たりにすると、まるで絵空事に思える事も自然と受け入れられた。 つまるところ、47が如何に思案しようと、ルイズという少女の使い魔に成る意外に選択肢がなかったのだ。 薄毛の、壮年の男は自らをコルベールと名乗った。このトリステイン魔法学院で教師を務めているらしい。試しに、47は彼にアメリカ、日本、イタリアと言った47にとって馴染みある単語を並べてみる。 「ふむ、申し訳ありませんがそのような国や大陸は聞いた事がありませんね。何か、物語の中の、空想の地方の名前でしょうか」 案の定と言ったところか、彼は、47がそうしたように首を傾げるだけに留まった。そして、最後に耳打ちする様な小さな声である事を尋ねる。 「ICAや、フランチャイズという組織は……」 「いえ。すみません。お役に立てなくて。どちらにせよ、いきなりこんなところに呼び出されていささか記憶が混乱しているのでしょう。 ひとまずは主についていき、使い魔としての役割を聞いてください」 この質問は、ある意味47にとっては賭けだった。もし、自身の属するICAや、それに関係した組織の名前を挙げて少しでも怪しげな素振りを見せれば、彼らはクロ、という事に成る。 それでも、コルベールは益々首をひねらせるだけに終始し、その上、記憶が混乱しているとさえ告げた。 これで、47は確信する。ここは、今まで自分の居た裏社会でも、表にあたる文明社会でもない。第三の世界だと。 超一級の暗殺者がこんな結論に至るのは幾ばくか奇妙であったが、47にとってはそれすら問題ではない。 ひとまずの仕事が、ルイズという少女の使い魔と成る事であり、本来の仕事が来れば、それを遂行するだけだからだ。 47は、コルベールとある程度の会話を済ませると、視界の片隅で背を向けているルイズを見つけ彼女に歩み寄る。 やや、表情が重い様に見えたが、47の気配を感じると、ついてきなさいと一言だけ言い歩き始めた。 「よう、ゼロのルイズ。平民を使い魔にした気分はどうだ」 だが、直後、上空から声が聞こえて来た。47が声のした方を見上げると、箒に見える木の棒に股がった少年少女が空を飛んでいた。 まさに、幻想小説のワンシーンのような光景に、47は驚きを隠せない。 「あれも、魔法なのか」 「……そうよ。本当に何も知らない平民ね」 47の問いに、ルイズは如何にも不機嫌そうに顔を赤くしている。どうも、先ほどから機嫌を悪くしているようだが、47には中々その理由が分からない。 「そこの平民!そいつは簡単なレピテーションも使えない、魔法成功率がゼロ。だからゼロのルイズなんだぜ」 そんな彼の心情を察するかの様に、今度は別の少年が周りにも聞こえるような大声で47に話す。成る程、だから彼女は未だ不機嫌な顔をしていたのだ。 となると、何故47が平民と呼ばれるのだろうか。先程からの会話で、それは侮蔑の意味を含んでいるのだとは分かる。しかし、それが何故自分と結びつくというのか。 結論に至るのは、まだあまりにも情報が少なすぎた。他にも確認したい事は山ほどあったが、現在の主を考慮した47は、ただ黙って彼女の後ろをついて歩いていった。 「まるで、執事だな」 其の夜、ルイズの部屋だと言う、煉瓦造りの簡素な個室に案内された47は、彼女から使い魔としての役割を説明され先ず、こんな言葉を漏らした。 主の身辺の世話をする事。主の目と成り耳と成る事。そして、主を守る盾と剣に成る事。 それは、彼のそれまでの生き様を振り返れば、まるで拍子抜けしてしまいそうな内容で、溜め息が出るのは、ある意味仕方のない事なのかもしれない。 「恐らく、急に言葉が通じたのは、主と使い魔との契約を交わして感覚を共有できるようになったからだろうな」 「随分、冷静なのね」 二番目の役割である、主の目となり耳となる事というのは、感覚の共有という事らしい。 しかし、ルイズも、47もそのような奇妙な感覚をもてなかった事から、それは当初失敗していたと思っていた。だが、それは、会話という点で一応の成功はしていた。 少ない情報からも、その点を理解しえた47は落ち着いていた。原因が何にせよ、会話が出来る事はかなりのプラスになるからだ。しかし、一方の主は、ずっと頭を抱えている。 「どうした。召喚の魔法とやらは成功したのだろう」 「だって……改めて考えて。まさか、平民を呼び出すだなんて思わなかったんだもの。もっと、こう、ゴーレムとか、そういうのを予想していたのに……」 昼間に浴びせられた暴言が彼女の中でフラッシュバックしているのだろう。言うにつれ、徐々に言葉が弱弱しくなっているのがよく分かる。 「ところで、まだ、名前聞いていなかったわね。貴方、何て言うの」 ルイズは、さて思い出したように、唐突にこんな事を尋ねた。今まで、色々と整理する事が多すぎて、全く忘れていたのだ。 「……47。そう呼んでもらえれば構わない」 「47、ね。変な名前」 47は、少し躊躇った後に、敢えて自身につけられた名前を正直に答えた。 ルイズはそれに対して怪訝そうな面持ちを見せはしたが、別段それ以上追求する様子はない。しかし、47もまた、彼女がこのような反応を見せるのはある程度予想はしていた。 「まあ良いわ。とりあえず明日から使い魔として色々やってもらうから。今日はもう疲れたから私は寝るわ。アンタはそこで寝て」 結局、ルイズはそれ以上の追求をやめ、47の寝床だと言う藁をしいた場所を指差して、そのままベッドに潜ってしまった。すぐに寝息が聞こえてくる。 たった一日で信じられない事が多くおき、疲れがどっとでてしまったのだろう。 しかし、47にとってはまだ眠りにつく程の睡魔はなく、寧ろ思案し続けてしまった結果目が覚めてしまっていた。 この際だ、と47は室内にあったテーブルの上に、自身の懐にしまっていた仕事道具を並べる。 サイレンサー、赤外線スコープを装着したカスタム仕様のシルバーポーラー、ピアノ線。遠隔操作で爆破できる爆弾。 毒材及び麻酔入り注射器、そして仮死薬入り注射器と、蘇生薬入り注射器。更に、直前の任務でのターゲットの顔写真。更に連絡用の携帯と、PDA。 出て来たのはこれで全てだった。任務で使ったのは、麻酔と毒材注射器のみで、何か仕事の依頼が来た時は直ぐに取りかかれるだろう。 ターゲットの写真を手にとり、そこに写っている少女と、ベッドで眠りにつく主を一瞥する。 やはり、似ている。47がどれほど見比べても感想は同じだ。 依頼の内容を心の中で復唱する。当初は、ターゲットのクローンは仮死薬を投与して、彼女を造った人々を混乱させ、彼女の近辺を調査した後に組織が回収に向かう予定だった。結果は、直前で暗殺となってしまった訳だが。 そして、その後蘇生薬を投与する。組織が、何故このような面倒な事を47に依頼させたのかは今と成っては不明である。クローンとは言え、殺人兵器とは言えまだ幼い彼女を救出するつもりで居たのだろうかとも推測は出来るが、確証の域に達する事はない。 次に、携帯とPDAを手にとる。案の定携帯は圏外で、PDAもエラー表示が出るばかりだ。完全に組織との連絡を絶たれてしまった47だが、相も変わらず無表情のままで、彼の内情を知る手段は、無い。 ふと視線をルイズの方に向けると、寝返りをうってシーツが乱れていた。彼女を起こさぬよう静かに、丁寧にシーツを正して47は仕事道具を全て懐に戻してから部屋を後にした。 どうも、この学園はそれまで彼が知る建築物とは勝手が違っていた。時折右往左往しながらも、ルイズの後について行った通路をなぞりつつ、彼が召喚された広場へと戻ろうとする。 その理由は、定かでない。ただ、ちょっとした休息で外に出たかったのかもしれない。或は、もしかしたら鏡がまた現れていて、元の世界に戻れるかもしれない、そう考えたのかもしれない。 ともかく、共通しているのは、彼女の寝ている部屋に居ては、どうも決まりが悪いと感じてしまうという事であった。 しかし、甘かった。要するに道に迷ってしまったのである。何処までも蝋燭で照らされた同じような煉瓦作りの通路のせいで、何処を歩いているのか分からなくなっていた。 普段ならこんな凡ミスは絶対にしない47だが、あまりの不甲斐なさに頭をひねる。更に不幸な事に、こんな時間だ。ルイズの部屋はどこかと尋ねる相手も居ない。 見たところ、建物自体は中世を思わせる。47は外に出て外観さえ確認できれば何とか出来そうだと、当初の目的とは異なるが、彼が召喚された広場に繋がるであろう通路を探し始める。 すると、とある通路の隅で金髪の少年が、フードを被っている何者かに寄り添っていた。何か会話をしているようだったが、47は構わず、そちらに歩み寄る。 「ん、誰だ……。ああ、あのルイズの使い魔君か。一体どうしたんだ」 敢えて気づかれやすい様に足音を立てて、自然に少年が振り向く様に仕向ける。少年は振り向き、47の顔を見ると如何にも迷惑そうな表情を浮かべた。フードを被っている方はその少年の後ろに隠れている。 「すまない。道に迷ってしまった。ミス・ルイズの部屋がどこか教えてくれないか」 「ああ、それなら……」 少年は意外にも、すんなりと47の頼み事を受けルイズの部屋への道を彼に教えた。少年の後ろでは、フードが左右に揺らめいている。47は、それが焦りだと理解すると、一礼して足早に案内された道を歩いていく。 前ページ次ページHitman ZERO the Assassin モットが死んだ、という報告で一番驚喜したのはタバサだった。まさか、依頼をした次の日の朝に完遂するとは彼女とて予想出来る事ではなかった。 授業の合間も本の虫になれた事が幸いしてキュルケにも疑られる事は無かったが、内心ではうずくものがあった。 彼なら、きっとあの依頼も、依頼として遂行してくれる。半ば、狂気な願いが彼女の中で初めて芽生えたのはこの時だった。 モットの死、それは浴室で溺死するという、貴族として恥な事この上ない死に方であった。彼が死亡する直前、彼の邸宅で働く平民達は口を揃えて酒を飲み、酷く酔っていたと語っている。 調査をした貴族はそれに加え、不審人物がいなかった事、争った形跡もない事から、この溺死が彼の不注意によるものだと断定して、ただの恥さらしとしてあっさりと片付いてしまった。 即ち、誰一人として、魔法を全く使えぬ平民の男が、誰にも見つからず、また、どんな証拠品も残さないでモットを殺害したなどとは思う余地がなかったという事だった。 一方、モットの死の当日から住み込みのメイドとして働く筈であったシェスタは、主の死去という事で再び学院に戻ってきた。 他の貴族から仕事の誘いもあったのだが、学院が彼女に戻ってくるよう強い意向を示したのだ。 だが、不本意とは言え主の死、というのは彼女にはショックを与える。モットの死から暫く彼女は寝込んでしまったのだ。 驚く事にこの時、学院の水を得意とするメイジ達が看病を自ら申し出た。曰く、彼女には生活面で随分世話になっている。だから、早く元気になってくれないと困る、と。 ルイズには、これが直ぐに照れ隠しからくる可愛い嘘だと気づいた。 シェスタのいる部屋から出て来たモンモラシーを捕まえ、彼女の体調等の様子を尋ねた時の恥ずかしそうに拗ねる表情をは、ずっとルイズの中に留まり続けるだろう。 そんなシェスタを気にかけていたルイズが47を連れ見舞いに行ったのは二日目、燃えるような夕日が印象的な時だった。 シェスタは白いシャツを纏いベッドで横たわっていたが、ドアが開くと同時に身を起こし二人を迎える。47には、若干やつれた様に見えた。 それでも、初日に比べれば回復した方なのだろう。表情は、メイド姿の彼女が見せるそれであった。 元気そうね、ルイズが声をかけると、シェスタは優しく微笑んで頷く。47が腕から下げていた籠からリンゴを取り出すと、シェスタは驚いた様に目を見開いた。 ルイズも、彼が見舞いに行く直前に厨房から果物を貰いに行った時は同じような表情を浮かべた事を思い出す。 彼が召喚される前にいた所では、見舞いに行く時は大抵果物を詰めた籠なり、花なりを持って行くらしい。 今回は貴族が、あくまでわざわざ平民の床に伏せる所まで行くという、平民に取っては大層勿体無い事だ。それに合わせて食べ物まで持ってくれる事など想像出来る筈も無い。 47が手にしたリンゴの皮をむき手頃な大きさにカットする間、ルイズとシェスタは本当に他愛のない話を続けていた。 彼の耳に当然入ってくるのだが、何より二人の会話を盗み聞く様な罰の悪さを感じ、記憶に留める事は無かった。 リンゴを切り終え器に移し替えた頃、シェスタは表情を陰らせた。そして、二人の顔を一瞥した上でこんな事を尋ねた。 この世界に、死んで良い人なんて、いるんでしょうか、と。モット伯爵は確かに悪い噂ばかり耳にする人です。それでも、死んだら誰かが悲しみます、と。 ルイズは、それまでの空気とは一変した事を感じ取り、押し黙ってしまう。そんな事をまともに考えた事など今まで無かった、そんな沈んだ表情を浮かべ、じっと自身を見つめるシェスタを視線から外した。 死んで良い人はいない。恐らく、誰かは哀しむだろう。だが、少なくとも人間は何れ死ぬ。誰かが望む望まざるに関わらず。 47がそんな状況にも関わらず至極落ち着いた口調で応える。それから、モット伯爵が死ぬのも、きっとそういう運命だった、と付け加えた。 シェスタは、ああ、そうですね、と伏し目がちに頷く。既に彼女の中に自身の問うた事に対する答えはあった。 だが、第三者から言われなければ、納得のできるものでは無かったのだろう。 ※※※ 「まあ、彼女も元気になったみたいだし、良かったわ」 二つの月が並んで空に浮かぶ夜、屋外にて魔法の練習をしていたルイズが不意にそんな言葉を漏らした。側では47がレンガ造りの壁に背をもたれてそんな彼女の姿を眺めている。 「今日の仕事っぷりを見る限りじゃあ、もう大丈夫っぽいしなあ」 その47の側で、壁に立てかけられたままのデルフリンガーが笑い声をまじえて応えた。 「にしてもお嬢ちゃん、さっきから爆発してばかりだけど一体何の魔法の練習をしているんだい」 幾度目かの小さな爆発で草が舞い上がると、デルフリンガーが溜まらず尋ねる。ルイズは杖を握る手を止め、顔だけデルフリンガーの方を向けた。 「明日また錬金の授業があるのよ」 それだけ言うと、またルイズは杖を降り始めた。先刻から爆発の起きている中心地点を良く見ると、掌におさまる程の小さな石がある。それに向けてルイズが何か唱えて、また爆発が起きた。 47が見ても、失敗続きだと分かる行為だが、ルイズの表情は絶望していなかった。その所為か、爆発の規模が徐々に大きくなっている様に見える。 「錬金とは、石を爆発で木っ端みじんにする事なのか」 「違うわよ。でも、前に比べて何かが違うの。手応えがあるって言うのか」 次第に、ルイズの声に冷静さが宿っていく。お喋りなデルフリンガーも、彼女の変化に気づき口を噤む。やがて、ルイズの呟きと、直後の爆発音しかしなくなる。 数十分の後、同じ動作を続けていた彼女の眼前で、唐突に一際大きな爆発が起きた。辺りに砂塵が立ち籠めルイズの咳き込む声が響く。暫くして砂塵が収まると、粉々になった石と、その先の大穴の開いた壁が三者の視線に飛び込んで来た。 今までのどんな魔法の失敗例よりも大きな爆発、そしてその瞬間の手応え。ルイズにしか知り得なかったが、間違いなくそれが何かの魔法の、完全なものとは言えないだろうが、成功だとすぐに確信した。 「こりゃあ確実に大目玉くらうぜ」 だが、デルフリンガーの笑い声の通り、馬車でも悠々と入れそうな大穴である。そして巨大な爆発音、誰かが駆けつけたら、間違いなく学園長室に直行だろう。瞬く間にルイズの血の気が引いて行く。 「ちょっと!早く逃げなさい!」 ところが、爆発音を聞き駆けつけたキュルケが怒鳴った事はルイズの予想に反するものだった。 意味がつかめず混乱する彼女を、巨大な影が覆う。不思議に思ったルイズが顔を上げると、其処には巨大な土のゴーレムが立っていた。途端に、ルイズの腰が抜ける。47は直ちにデルフリンガーを背負い、ルイズを抱えて駆けた。 一方のゴーレムは、ルイズの空けた大穴目掛けて拳を振り落とす。大地が揺れ、大穴が更に広がった。 遅れて到着したタバサが、キュルケとともにゴーレムを見上げるが、その巨大さを前にして手も足も出ない。ただ、ゴーレムが穴の中に手を差し込む様子を黙って見続ける。 「ありゃあただのメイジが造れるようなヤワなもんじゃねえな」 「ギーシュの造ったものと、似ているのか」 「似ているけど、もう別もんって言っても良いだろうよ。とりあえずこの場にいるお嬢ちゃん達だけじゃあどうしようもできないわな」 「……そうか」 ゴーレムの動く度に起こる、強烈な振動に身を揺さぶられながらも、47はルイズをゴーレムから離れた場所の芝生の上まで抱える。ルイズの表情を見ると、放心状態といった様子でゴーレムを見上げていた。 巨大故に、動きが緩慢なのかと47は初め考えていた。だが、意外にも彼らの目の前に突如現れたゴーレムは俊敏だった。 教師達が現場に到着するまでの僅かな時間で、学園の外まで悠然と歩いて行ったのだ。当然、教師が揃った頃には学園の中にゴーレムの姿も影もなく、残されたのは更に大きく広がった横穴だけだった。 ※※※ 翌日、47はそのゴーレムというのが、土くれのフーケという盗賊によるものだと知らされた。 何でも珍しい宝を求めて様々な場所に己の魔力で生み出したゴーレムとともに出没するらしい。今回は学院の所蔵庫から破滅の書なるものを盗んだという事だ。 盗賊なのに、やり方が随分荒々しいものだと広場の隅で軽蔑に似た思案をしていると、顔を真っ赤にしたルイズに強引に腕を引っ張られ、学園長室まで連れて行かれた。 そのまま、ややバランスを崩したまま入室すると、オスマン及びロングビル以外にタバサと、キュルケ、そして学院の教師とおぼしき人物数名が並んでいた。 皆によると、学院が総力を挙げて調査した結果、フーケの潜伏しているであろう場所が判明したという。 そこで、学院から調査団を派遣してフーケの盗み出した破滅の書を回収、出来るのならばフーケの捕縛を行う。その為の人員をオスマンが集めていたという訳だ。 だが、そのフーケという人物は、ハルケギニアにその名を轟かす程の高い実力を持つ魔法使いだ。 そして、所蔵庫は魔法の結界によって厳重に防備されていたのだが、それを容易く打ち破ってしまった事もあり、学院の教師達は尻込みをしてしまった。 オスマンがこれを嘆き、途方に暮れている所に所蔵庫に横穴をあけた張本人、ルイズが我こそはと調査団に加わる事を志願した。 キュルケとタバサも、数少ないゴーレムの目撃者として参加する意志を示す。彼女達の内情は、勿論、無鉄砲な行動をとったルイズを気遣う気持ちもあったのだろうが、それを口にはしない。 魔法を使えないルイズはともかくとして、キュルケとタバサは学院内でも実力の高い方に位置している。 取り分けタバサに至っては、この時ルイズとキュルケも初めて知った事だが、シュヴァリエ、即ち爵位を持つメイジだ。 つまるところタバサは下手な教師よりも腕の立つ魔法使いといっても過言ではない。これに少しは安心した教師陣は彼女達に調査を任せる事を決めた。 そもそもフーケがこれから向かう場所にいるという確信はない。学院として、自らの尻拭いを出来るだけリスクの少ない方法でする事で面子を保ちたい、そんな意図を47は肌で感じ取っていた。 オスマンの表情を覗く。微かにだがため息を漏らしていた。47と似た事を考えていたのだろうが、学院長という立場からあまり教師陣に強く言う事も難しいのだろう。 ルイズ、キュルケ、タバサ。この三人に合わせて、情報収集に当たっていたロングビル、そして各々の使い魔達が調査団に選抜しフーケの向かった古小屋に向かう事が決まった。 当初は47もこのメンバーに不安を覚えたが、先導するロングビルもまた嘗てメイジであった事を知る。 「それでは、一時間後に出発したいと思います。それまでの間に準備をしておいてください」 ロングビルの静かな声が、室内を満たす。 47は考える。調査をするという名目では確かにこのメンバーでも問題は無いだろう。
