EWS alphabet [αλφα βήτα, the first two Greek letters] 1 A writing system characterized by a systematic mapping relation between its signs (graphemes) and the minimal units of speech (phonemes). 2 The total number of elementary signs in an alphabetic writing system, bar punctuation marks. 3 The fixed order of the written signs of a language, ABC. The set of letters used in writing the Greek language was called alphabet(a) by combining the first two letter names which in turn derive from west Semitic ‘āleph and bēth. The term itself is of Latin origin whence it came into general use for any set of the elementary signs of a phonetic script. Alphabetic writing can be defined as a system of recording language which makes use of this inventory of letters or any historically related variant thereof. The alphabet most widely used nowadays is the English alphabet consisting of 26 1etters. They are arranged in a fixed order each having its own name. Each letter has two different forms, one called capital 1etter and the other small letter, or upper case and lower case , respectively. In a wider sense the term alphabet applies both consonant scripts such as Hebrew and Arabic, and to segmental scripts comprising letters for consonants and vowels, for example Greek. While generally representing the most important sounds of the language for which they are employed, alphabetic writing systems vary greatly in complexity and in the kind and regularity of grapheme-phoneme (letter-sound) correspondence. Alphabets with a one-to-one correspondence based on the principle of only one symbol for each sound are called phonemic alphabets . Such alphabets or systems approximating this ideal have been and are being used for several languages including Spanish, Finnish and Serbo-Croatian as well as many languages recently provided with an alphabet. However, one-to-one consistency on the phonemic level is by no means the predominant characteristic of alphabetic writing systems. Many are highly irregular or exhibit regularities on the morpho-phonological or lexical rather than the phonological level. Alphabetic writings that are not periodically adjusted have a tendency to preserve etymological spellings rather than strict grapheme-phoneme correspondence.
